Rockstar's alwas been a bit of a rocky road for me. I can't stand the GTA series but a lot of their niche titles like red dead or LA Noire I like

I have no beef with the studio that made Red Dead Redemption (Rockstar San Diego) - that was a very cool game.

Rockstar North, however... I really have to wonder what goes through their heads sometimes. The GTA games are just foul. Playing them just feels wrong.

Oh, wait. Them.
I was waiting for someone to mention that abbomination in a can.
Fruit Punched is pretty good though...at least I feel it is.

On Topic: I think they lost their way a little bit with GTA4. Went too serious and realistic and such. I, personally, didn't like Red Dead Redemption much. Not really sure why because I didn't feel it was a bad game in any way. It was probably because it just felt slow.

I used to like them but now things have turned all serious and it's no fun anymore, from my point of view they are going in a direction that doesn't draw me.

Despite how i did not really enjoy GTA IV, Rockstar remains my favorite game company. I love how they can make a good story with humor and when a game company releases games for all platforms (im a pc gamer) then it gets some major points.
I find they deal with costumers in a very friendly manner too.

I don't know about the 'not keeping promises' stuff, since I generally don't keep up with the pre-release buzz on Rockstar games.
What I can say is that my opinion of them is currently a lot higher than it used to be. The endless churning-out of GTA titles had not only turned them into the epitome of boredom in my eyes, but had actually gotten me to the point where I deliberately steered clear of any and all sandbox games because I was utterly sick of them. But then, Red Dead Redemption came along, the first Rockstar game in a long time I had massive amounts of fun with, and delivered the best Western I'd ever seen (and I've seen a lot of them). This one-time high turned into a streak with L.A. Noire which, while certainly not among my favorites, put an emphasis on story, offered a refreshing take on adventure games and combined that with Rockstar's trademark drive-around-and-shoot-people sandbox formula in a way that worked surprisingly well.
So, at this time I can only say, way to go, Rockstar, and keep it up!

I feel they've lost their fun streak.

It started with GTA4 and continued throughout Red Dead Redemption.

Bully was the last Rockstar game I actively enjoyed because it still had that fun and goofy nature.
Well, to each their own. I preferred GTA4 to the earlier GTAs, the only thing it lacked is the breadth of customisation and stuff to do that existed in San Andreas. I was fine with the more realistic feel.

RDR was a masterpiece.

I've loved damn near every one their games and virtually all of the bad things I've heard about them haven't been about the company itself, but about other, external studios they've produced for.

Regardless, RDR absolves them of all sins in my mind. An absolute masterpiece of game design.

Edit: Lol at the post right above this one.

GTA 2 is the last Rockstar game I've ever played. I never felt like I really needed their games enough to actually buy one.

I love their games but I have a few little niggles:

1. They need to move on from using tired old stereotypes like Irish and Little Jacob

2. The controls in their games don't feel as intuitive to me as other modern games. The turning circles are too big and movement generally feels awkward and clumsy.

3. Difficulty spikes, escort missions and shitty on-rails missions.
Can I add

4. Quit making the shooting entirely auto aim. It's way too autopilot for me, and messing around with the options to turn it off pretty much completely takes it away, which really doesn't work too well on console.

This is semi related to the complaint I set above, but with the duels in Red Dead, I kept getting extremely frustrated because it would force you to use every last one of your bullets to kill the guy, and he (John Marston) fired every shot in literally less that a second.

That's while it's in slow motion too.

That almost killed the game for me. There's a point in the beginning where it lets you shoot just one shot (I think because it's right before you get Dead Eye) where I got in a random duel and I shot the guy in the hand and the balls.

I felt like the biggest bad ass in the world.

They arent a bad developer.. But personally I am not fond of the manner in which they make too many practically duplicate quests with little or no deviation in each game to pad the content of the game. Seriously it gets pretty bad and redundant at times.

Rockstar is my last dev from my entire gaming life I still have faith in. When they show something I know what I am going to get. GTA has been a favorite of mine since its inception. Manhunt and RDR are probably two of the best games I've played in the last decade.

While GTA4 felt kinda weird being somewhat serious, I like the direction they went. (are going?)They also do DLC right. (sans LA Noir so far). If I'm gonna pay for something make it worthwhile, and they do.

Rockstar depresses me. I remember playing GTA: San Andreas for the first time and being blown away by the size and scope of the world, the smoothness of the gameplay and how well the story was told... and wishing they'd use all that for something other than sensationalist, intentionally 'controversial' gangster posturing.

I think they make good games. I just wish they'd step outside their comfort zone a bit more and stop with the macho gangster shit.
I think this sums up my stance as well. LA Noire looks decent, though, and I'd be willing to give it a try.

The last Rockstar game I enjoyed playing was GTA 2.

All of the games from GTA 3 onwards have been pretty samey; although I have yet to play GTA 4. Red Dead I was extremely bored with :/

It's not a matter of them being a good or bad developer, it's more to do with the fact that I just don't enjoy their games.

I dont particularly like Rockstar I mean I want to but I just dont like many of their games GTA3,Vice city, GTA4 (didnt play san andreas) just felt the same, create a massive world then think ah crap lets put some junk in there escort mission here race here package here it just dosent feel organic to me never played Bully but Manhunt was very poor I took it back after the 6th level.Im looking forward to trying red dead properly sometime in the future and the table tennis game was surprisingly solid but generally no I dont like them and I feel they are hugely overated its like they can do no wrong even if the game is average it gets great scores sorta like original star wars and godfather films yeah they are ok even good in places but dont deserve to be placed on such a high plinth.
Great, I was planning on being impartial, that hasn't worked.

Rockstar's games may not be the be all and end all of the medium, that is an unfair comparison, like comparing hockey to stamp collecting, but they stand out in the genre, I enjoy Saints Row, I even shelled out nearly $50 for the DLC for the second game (I'm working with a minuscule budget, 50 bucks is a big step), but Grand Theft and Red Dead made the world come alive, they had an atmosphere that games like SR and True Crime couldn't replicate, remember when they used to be called "GTA clones"?, that happened for a reason, if I'm driving around Stilwater, I feel like an observer, like I can put down my controller and walk away, but when I'm galloping around New Austin I part of a living world, that guy who I hog-tied before I slit his throat, I actually feel bad about it.

They write their games well so you (or at least me, I could just be weird) live in that world as much as the guy behind the counter at Clucking Bell, John Marston and Niko Bellic were believable characters, they didn't want to rule the world, they just wanted to have a normal life.

So I've gone fan-boy for a few minutes, lets get back to the discussion, unless this thread has died.

Just an addendum on the end, The Godfather IS a great movie, Coppola took a b grade novel and turned it into an opus, Star Wars took Sci-Fi and transformed it from a tacky genre where films could be made for less than the average weekly wage of a shelf stacker and turned it into a genre that could actually be good and was worth spending money on.
What ever you choose to call Rockstar's various open-world creations genre-wise, they have given the "Shooty/drivey" mechanic a face lift, giving it a little bit of respect.

I should stop talking now.......

Only played Red Dead Redemption, but I loved it. Great atmosphere, and it really pulled me in. Shame I only rented it though, I'd kill for a decent PC version of that game. (L.A. Noire being ported to PC interests me, but I'd rather have RDR)

They make good games. And they have great writers. That's all it takes for me to love them.

Im not saying they dont stand out and arent better than the clones GTA in particular have spawned what I am saying is I dont like them I find them unenjoyable and hard work to play and the characterisation and stories just dont do it for me and of course developers jumping on the gta band wagon meaning there is less new games I want to play because more are mirroring the GTA formulae which fails in my eyes to make a good game (yet).

This is just my opinion though and thats the key phrase its in the thread title im not saying your opinion is any less or more credible than mine but there is no way you will convince me to like Rockstar based on their output just as im sure there is no way I will convince you to not like them.

They create the best third-person shooters I've ever played, so I'd say they're pretty darn good.
