I don't hate them, but I don't consider them to be the beacon of greatness some people think. I think perhaps my problem is the maps are far too large, yet empty at the same time. I'd much prefer a smaller town, except you can interact with everyone(Talking, not killing) and everything(90% of buildings in GTA you can't go in). I always feel the story isn't that long as well. I mean take Red Dead Redemption, the story itself is rather short, but it's padded out by a lot of pointless missions.

Well, I must say that I've never quite played anything by P.M. so I know not what kind of comparison your friend might make, but Rockstar I guess, for me personally is a moderetely good company, with moderetely good games. If I had to judge by their games, which I guess would be the only possible thing to judge by (I don't know why you say that it has nothing to do with them), I've had tons of fun with them, so in my opinion, that's a positive trait to possess.

Rockstar depresses me. I remember playing GTA: San Andreas for the first time and being blown away by the size and scope of the world, the smoothness of the gameplay and how well the story was told... and wishing they'd use all that for something other than sensationalist, intentionally 'controversial' gangster posturing.

I think they make good games. I just wish they'd step outside their comfort zone a bit more and stop with the macho gangster shit.
I'm not sure what you mean. Isn't that exactly what they did with LA Noire and Red Dead Redemption? Neither were particularly sensationalist, intentionally controversial or gangster-related. Both were in fact quite well written, deep and thoughtful.

Despite how i did not really enjoy GTA IV, Rockstar remains my favorite game company. I love how they can make a good story with humor and when a game company releases games for all platforms (im a pc gamer) then it gets some major points.
Despite RDR being the only game of theirs I truly love, I agree. It comes down to whether the basic concepts are my thing- I don't dig on noir, so LAN was a bit wasted on me and I'm not that interested in the whole gangsta thing but RDR was stunningly executed and utterly compelling. But they cut no corners and their worlds are flawless, alive and beautifully detailed.

If I had one niggle, it's that controlling their characters feels like guiding a cow around a hedge maze. I adjust most times, but it became frustrating in places, especially studying crime scenes in LAN.

I wasn't really into Rockstar games for a long time. GTA just wasn't my thing. Sure, I played them for a bit, but I never got hooked on any of them. I never got around to playing Bully. First one I really enjoyed was Red Dead Revolver, purely from my passion for Western films.
Then Redemption came out and they've been a favorite of mine since. It's almost perfect to me. Sure, there are missing things I'd like to see, but that's another post for another topic.

L.A. Noire is another great title to add to their list. If anything Rockstars stock just keeps going higher and higher. They are a brand making some really great games and I doubt we've seen their best yet.

Rockstar is sort of an oddball for me, but overall I like their games. I absolutely hated GTA4, I honestly don't know why it got all of those perfect scores. Why did I hate it you may ask? Well, let me tell you!

Nico as a character was completely schizophrenic. For example I take one mission where he has to watch over a gang deal as a sniper to which he eagerly agrees to do so going "Yeah...yeah, alright, that sounds good." Then, after a brief 5 minute rampage for whatever reason, I go to another mission where that one gay guy wants to go boating to which Nico responds by yelling at him and saying "I am hiding from the mafia you idiot! I can't expose myself like this!" What? You had just eagerly accepted a hitjob, and went on a rampage, why do you all of a sudden care? This is a problem with open world games; consistency, and Rockstar, I think, does it the worst.

Also, the weapons were bland and uninteresting. There are literally only a few kinds of variety. A rocket launcher, shotgun, pistol, rifle, and sniper. That's really about it. And the only other weapons are clear upgrades of those weapons. There's no dildo. No katana. No tank. Not even any fun cheats. It had gotten so "dark" and "edgy" and "serious" that it really drained all the fun out of it. And I think it would have been fine if it hadn't been schizophrenically driving that line between "goofy fun" and "gritty realism". It still had all the wacky stereotypes but it tried to play them straight.

I dunno, I guess it just didn't click with me. Red Dead Redemption was much better, though it still fell into inconsistent territory and at times it felt padded out. Still, I enjoyed it much more than the piece of tripe GTA4 was.

I haven't played either of those (I'd like to play RDR, if they ever port it to PCs) so can't comment on them. My main problem with Rockstar is GTA. I just look at that series and feel it hasn't evolved in any meaningful way in the best part of a decade.

Put it a different way - their world building is awesome, their writing is good, their storytelling is clever and involving and I hate seeing it's pissed away again and again on a series that's going nowhere.

Don't get me wrong - I enjoy the free roaming mayhem of the likes of Saints Row 2, but that game is so OTT it's essentially a cartoon. GTA increasingly acts like it wants to be taken seriously, and whilst they have the talent and the budget to do something genuinely dramatically involving, they can't, or won't, get out of the rut the series is in. It's as if Martin Scorcese just decided to make Goodfellas over and over again, for a decade.

I feel rockstar doesn't take as many chances as other companies, also they don't put alot of time into a hard hitting title unless they knew it would sell well

GTA4 was a strange shift of tone, but Red Dead Redemption was awesome, one of my favorite games ever. They've also been one of the few companies where the single player DLC felt like it was worth the money

I really like Rockstar, I would consider them to be one of the few companies that I count on to make or release good games. I own the entire GTA series (except for Advance and Chinatown Wars) which I am a big fan of, own the two Max Payne games, Red Dead Revolver and Redemption, and L.A. Noire.

I'm looking foreword to GTA V whenever it comes out and Agent.

I haven't even played Red Dead Redemption because I was fooled into buying GTA IV, which garnered tons of praise. From my perspective, GTA IV was horrible - as in Prototype was more fun. It felt like a chore driving back and forth with the arcade physics and bouncy castle suspension. Even combat was clunky and uninteresting. I figured that I had no particular problem with Rockstar. I just don't like their games.

I like Rockstar. As a whole i think they do superb story telling, and find superior voice acting for all of their games. I think the newer GTA's are a bit overhyped but really overall have enjoyed all of their titles so far. My only qualm is that i think that their games look terrible at night. I jsut don't like how they render shadows, every game i've played just ahs those black void shot in the dark areas where u lose any detail what so ever and it becomes a guessing game. Until some random light source completely blows out the scene. Other then that. Keep up the good work :D

My problem with Rockstar is that anytime they come up with a great idea for symbolism/satire, they oversimplify it.

In GTA 4, Niko Belic comes to Liberty City in search of the American dream. Of course, all he finds is drugs, death, and the occasional cheap thrill. The message, of course, that we as a country don't know the American dream anymore - And frankly, that message would've had a stronger impact if Rockstar had done it in a more subtle manner, and let people figure it out for themselves. Unfortunately, after a certain point in the game you can't go anywhere without Niko having a tantrum to whoever will listen about how the American dream is bullshit - As though Rockstar assumed their audience would be too stupid to figure it out on their own.

In Red Dead Redemption, in one mission you're driven to a mission objective by automobile. Now, at this point you've spent the entire game on horseback, and comparison wise, riding in the dull machinery feels slow, boring, and lacks any sort of majestic feel, and it occurs to you that within the game, this is soon to become the norm. It's a heavy idea - At least until protagonist John Marston starts complaining about how he'l take a horse any day, and how the automobile is a piece of crap. And then the message simply stops having meaning - And as though Rockstar was afraid that the audience didn't get the idea, at one point in the mission it breaks down.

It's getting to the point where I feel insulted playing their games.
