Borderlands is a great one, "Ain't no rest for the wicked" sets the tone of the game personally.

I've also always liked the intro to Metal Gear Solid 2, it just always stuck with me for some reason.

Surprised no-one has mentioned the Freespace 1 opening, it's definitely one of my favourites, completely sets the scene for Freespace 1&2.


It especially worked on me because I had played the sequel first and knew exactly what was coming.

...This is...the most moving, and heartfelt intro of a video game, that I have ever experienced in my life. I cried when it was over. It was just...it...I can't put it into words..

If anybody DOES try to shoot you, I would gladly dive in front of that bullet. One of the greatest openings ever.

Personally, I think the openings to the games in the Tales series are really good (at least the two I've really played). I'm not entirely sure why, but whenever I watch them, it makes me really want to play the game.

FF8, FF9, FF10, FF12. All pretty epic, with 8 being my favourite - followed by 12.
I agree with Soul Reaver being the best though - gives a clear backstory, a good villain and an awesome protagonist within 3 minutes.

Bioshock's was probably the best for me. Ocarina of Time runs it a clos second- it was beautifully understated and so effective.

Because it just generally sets the games mood and what story there is (NONE), Its also a fun little game, And the song is AWESOME TOO.

The opening set the mood and the tone so well. Such an immersive and compelling game from the very beginning. I really felt like the elite pilot of a Mech, leading a lance in its struggle to complete its mission.
