Specifically anime, and not when the manga is better...

Princess Tutu.

I'm dead serious. It's really good. Good enough to inspire an internet meme, even.

Some others...The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Outlaw Star, most stuff by Hayao Miyazaki, Cowboy Bebop/Samurai Champloo, and Hayate the Combat Butler. And Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, which I really liked (and if I didn't recommend it, a random person would probably smack me upside the head for forgetting).

I could recommend more, but those are the highest quality ones I can recommend with few reservations (I love Lucky Star, for example, but it's an extremely hit-or-miss show).

Actually, it went through season 1, but they stopped at 2. Shit man, it would be my fucking dying wish to be able to see a new season! It may be only 1 season, but that 1 season is fucking worth it. I'm just starting to read the Manga!

Edit: Why the fuck do I keep spelling it dieng instead of dying!? UGH

I just watched Eden of the East, that skyrocketed into my top ten. Keeps you on the edge of your seat until the final episode, then leaves you wanting more. Glad they have the movies coming.

Other favorites include in no particular order:

Scrapped Princess (best fantasy anime I've seen yet)

Bubblegum Crisis OVA (best cyberpunk anime I've seen, also my first anime DVDs)

Full Metal Alchemist (actually just watched the first series when the second came out, now keeping up with the subs of Brotherhood on funimation.com)

Gunslinger Girl (So sad, but so awesome. The second series, so far that I've seen, doesn't live up to the first at all though)

Read or Die OVA (Fell in love with this show when I saw it crushed into a movie on CN, got the DVD the first time I saw it in a store, been meaning to check out the TV series but haven't yet)

Blood: The Last Vampire and Blood+ (best vampire anime hands down)

Neon Genesis Evangelion (like everyone else in the known anime watching universe)

Kite (may be H, but it had a sweet, tight action story and actual emotional depth, boy do you really hate the badguys by the end. Plus the fall after the bathroom fight was epic)

Nanoha (I'm not usually into Magical Girl shows, but this one had some of the best magic battling I've ever seen, particularly in A's)

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Entertaining, good buildup and great concept, only get's a point off because I noticed a logic mistake with the time travel)

Beyond from the Animatrix (Loved it's sort of ghost story sensibility and pretty CG layered backgrounds)

Voices of a Distant Star (Touching, amazing it was animated by 1 man)

Perfect Blue (Ausome psychological thriller, don't know what's real and what's not)

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni (Creepy as all hell, I need to finish it still actually)

Excel Saga was awesome as it parodied everything

And as people mentioned above FLCL was trippy in an awesome way.

Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is great but the Endless Eight arc is getting kindof old.

And for a couple things that fall outside of my usual watch zone but I found funny/cute:
Azu Manga Dio, K-On, and Rec. Only seen a few eps each of those so far, but always leave me smiling ^_^

For a creepy anime - sci-fi harry, and Hellsing Ultimate.
Something i find hilarious but some people just look and think im crazy... - detroit metal city.
and something just plainly cool - Chrome Shelled Regios.
D.Grayman is good aswell i love it, just skip about 20 episodes of boring fillerand you're set.
-Props to ZickyJacks. s-CRY-ed is with Regios for just plainly cool in changed world with cool new technology things. and Vash from Trigun is probably one of my favorite characters.
i couldnt get into hellgirl\jigoku shoujo i seen like 7 eps but it was all the exact same thing...
Code geass is probly right beside death note for cruel cliff-hangers after EVERY SINGLE EPISODE. which really sucked waiting one week between each episode. now theyre a nice batch file... enjoy you lucky bums.....
the current big 3 Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece. id say watch like 2 eps of them, then go read the manga.
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaa long post, but its my first XD

Episode 25 was the ending to season 1.
ah

I heard some rumors of people trying to gain the rights from the anime studio so that they can make more episodes, albeit in English.

Good, I prefer English Dubs since subtitles distract me from wtf's going on.

I'd like to vote for a more abstract one: Hajime No Ippo. It's a boxing anime, and it's pretty cool, if you're into boxing. :)

For a good show of 50% fanservice and 50% action i would say godannar . . . . wait make that 80% to 20% ^.^, but if fanservice isnt ur thing Fate-stay night is damn amusing, and Souleater also has a delightfully amusing storyline . . . . well so far atleast im just starting to poke at it and already it makes me Gleeeee like a little school girl that just had someone confess there love to me, Hmmmm but moving on nice weather were having ...

-Elfen Lied(as close to FLCL perfection as something can get if u can handle all the blood, gore, and nudity)
-Kurau Phantom Memory(It's good for how obscure it is)
-Darker Than Black(Good actiuon good story good everyhing it's just overall good but not life changing)
-Berserk(seriously one of the most fucked up endings ever)
-Gurren Laggann(It was good but I expected abit more from the creators of FLCL)
-FLCL(Fooly Cooly/Furi Kuri six episodes of pure perfection)
-Lupin III(It's Lupin it's a classic)
-Baccano!(I haven't finished it but it's pretty good)
-Gungrave(underrated)
-Lucky Star(Don't Tell Anyone I watched this show)
