I don't think this is as big of a deal as most make it out to be. Also, it's definitely not censorship. Not even close.
True, it's not censorship, but it does somewhat limit what pundits can make a profit from. And frankly, if Fox News is allowed to make a buck talking about how awful everything is over in [somewhere], why shouldn't the little guy on Youtube be allowed to as well?

Frankly, this decision makes little sense to me, because its so simplistic. No content about war, famine or similar subjects? The Great War [https://www.youtube.com/user/TheGreatWar] has to remove all their content, because it's a channel about the history of World War I.

If The Great War doesn't get all of its content demonetized, then this whole thing is utterly arbitrary, which just defeats the purpose of it.
I see no evidence that The Great War has to remove all of their content. Although, I suppose it's possible that they could see most, if not all of their content demonetized. I'm really curious to see how this shakes out.
Sorry, sorry; I'm so used to these threads being about videos getting taken down, I wrote that by mistake. *embarrased*

I'll fix it.

No apology necessary. The demonetization policy is mostly automated, searching for key words in titles and descriptions. It's possible most youtubers could get around this by simply editing their titles and descriptions, but I must stress that I'm merely speculating.

I don't think anyone ever claimed that most youtubers were real, investigative journalists. Some, like TYT, pretend they are, but most of them acknowledge that their entertainers.

There are a lot of channels that are worth protecting. Most of the ones I sub to, like Every Frame a Painting, focus on film and story analysis. Many of the channels are run by people who have worked in the field, and provide excellent, university level video essays. Overall, I think this controversy is overblown, but lets not pretend that there aren't some excellent content creators out there.

Edgy. Please sit down and contribute to the threat at hand.
A kid drinking punch is edgy? You sport dangerously low levels of self awareness.

The newer crop of users has been a bit of a let down, I won't lie. Is this guy and Epic Wyn really the best we can muster?

I'm now curious, what is it you do, Kina? You have a seriously strong opinion on the nature of what makes a job and who deserves the ability to profit from said job. I'm genuinely interested in seeing from what standpoint you are coming from yourself.
Sales operator internationally for Disney Live, Disney on Ice and Monster Jam.
Ah, this explains it. Sales Operator, so are you advertisement call-center or ticket collections, as that title has been used for both. If the former, your opinion on this becomes remarkably biased as you are the bottom most rung to the issue that is at hand, marketing advertisement based on content. If the later, I feel for you. That is a rough job.

Also, I like the idea of referring to you as Mr. Please Sit Down.

That's the gist I got from most replies here though. They are indeed entertainers/content creators, some who actually do a great job. But that's about it.

Sit down.

Actually I tour with them 10 months out of the whole year, and my position somewhat changes depending on what is needed for what tour. It ranges from actual sales to customers coming to our shows, to production, ordering, maintaining stock as well as settling the money at the end of the day. The tickets are dealt with on the promotion side which thankfully I'm not part of. It may not sound too glamorous on paper, but it's truly a dream job for me. I've traveled throughout most of the world, just got home from working in Japan for 5 months and I'm about to start a tour going through the vast majority of Europe lasting 6 months.. in two weeks.

You sir may stand.

Huh, that does sound nice. My money was on delusional dog trainer.

Kinda curious though, what makes home "home" if you're away from it 10-11 months out of the year? Do you even keep a single place, given that you'd need to pay to keep it for all those months you're away?

Just cuz I've been registered longer than either of you doesn't mean I've actually been around longer. Only started regular posting last month. Pretty sure over half my post count comes from the last 4 weeks, as opposed to the first 70 or so which took place over 6 years. I'm, effectively, a new poster, from the perspective of the wider community.

So you're like, that old dude who dropped out in the 80s, but has to get their High School Diploma if he wants to...do whatever motivates the plot.

Mr Sit. Down. calling anyone edgy lacks so much self awareness it hurts.
Just start ignoring him and he'll go away.
Actually, I reported him for causing a disturbance, and I'll keep it up 'till it stops. I don't think he'll last.

On-topic, is this Youtube being shit any worse than the way Youtube is always shit?

Source, please? I looked around online and couldn't find any news about a policy change.
I mean the youtube video I posted with this is kinda a primary source document is it not?
Not really, that's just the one guy saying that that's what happened.
Not just that, one guy who's livelihood is (he claims) receiving quite a hit. Bias, and emotions, both of which cloud judgement and color perception (maybe Youtube is sanctioning him, specifically, for some specific incident, and either out of malice or hurt he's taken that and extrapolated "severe rule changes for everybody"). There's no reason to disbelieve him per se, but no reason to believe in him either. Corroboration from an unbiased source is what I want to see.

I mean, just how many channels make frequent use of profanity and touchy topics? If this were true, Jim Sterling, for one, would be up in arms about it. Don't see anything on his Twitter.
Jim wouldn't care because most of his content is Patreon funded and he never monetizes his videos on YT.
If he is going to talk about it it's because it hurts his YT friends more than anything.

This is not censorship. People are still more than welcome to create such content - they just wont get paid for it.

If you rely solely on your Youtube income to survive, then you've got bigger things to worry about than your "content haven". Perhaps getting a real job would be right up your alley.
Using the 'real job's argument is poor because this is a valid job as any other. The issue here is being stupid enough to put all your eggs in one basket and cry about it when the basket starts laying down some ground rules.

I kinda think it is. You're telling people to watch what they say or no ads. This makes it even harder for newcomers like me because I believe ads also push your videos onto people's "recommend" section. Even if you rely solely on patreon you can only rely on word of mouth which is VERY slow.

Curious. I thought the Recommends were based upon a cross-reference of what's been recently uploaded with what the user has lately been viewing. (Namely, that because I watch Markiplier and Jacksepticeye, I'll be getting a whole buncha' things about video game playthroughs, say.)

I think that also makes a diffrence. I mean, you wouldn't want to be recommended makeup tutorials when all you watch is Markiplier. I just remember people saying since they don't monetize videos or can't they're not being recommended to other people. This scares me as someone who wants to start up on yt.

Who are we talking about? That sit-down dude? Oh, he's harmless.

Also in keeping with YouTube, MundaneMatt explains it best. Nothing will change because fuck-all has actually be changed. YouTube's policy has been in place and working for over a year, and no one cared/noticed. They only updated a small icon notification system that lets you see what's being monetized and what's not. But its been in practice for over a year, and none of the big names who are calling it an end to life, the universe and everything noticed a hit to their wallets.

Its all just a lot of beating the bush and drama. Boogie is fine. Defranco, TL:DR, the 40k Battle Report guys, MLP reactors, makeup artists, people popping pimples, FilthyFrank, everyone. They're ALL fine because they were fine for the last year, even without knowing it.
