The OP should also note that Jim Sterling has made a video, and I think TotalBiscuit has, as well. So, Great Britain speaks, I guess.

Yeah but Jim didn't say much new. Just his usual righteous indignation and bark-bark speeches. Haven't seen TB's video, but I can guess its a slightly better phrased and researched version of JimmyBoy's vid.

What he said DID make sense, of course Youtube will never have the manpower or the competence to do the job themselves either. For some reason, Google somehow can't afford quality workmanship.

I guess? I mean not that I guess, I agree. He does make sense. But I always felt when it came to the YouTube business model Jim always is a little too...simplistic? Maybe minimizing is a better phrase. Like I get that he thinks he's the boss and his viewers are the customers, but he's not and they're not. YouTube, meaning Google, is the boss, and the customers are the ones who buy ad space. Because they're actually paying for a service, whereas you and I watching Jim are just two dudes watching YouTube videos.

and then he gets angry, saying something about stop sticking up for the 9-5 corporate shills who control you and blah blah blah. And it just comes off as the verbal equivalent of sticking fingers in your ear and going 'blah blah blah'. and I know that's not how he intends it, but as someone whose worked in marketing, and crappy retail jobs that were taken away without even a second's notice, he just comes off as entitled. Like in a "I made a video, give me money" kind of way, when what I learned in marketing is work of any kind is utterly meaningless if someone won't pay you for it, and no one is obligated to pay you for it. Just because you think your work is sellable, doesn't mean anyone is buying or even that its worth selling.

But i do agree that Youtube IS handling this very poorly. Its feels like they don't have a PR department at all. Someone to smack a few heads and say "No, I will write the press release and it'll answer all the questiosn!"

Opinions on how Jim is seen as handling situations aside, I'll address this because I KNOW Youtube has no PR Department. Complaints - of which there are many - are never really addressed. Updates change things that did not need to be changed, tack on features to a buggy system that weren't asked for or work right, and then of course you have this stuff...which probably doesn't even serve companies competently either, if I had to say it.

But yes, Youtube just doesn't have enough people or good enough people working for it, period. Not to manage this, not to code and maintain the place, not to address problems - not to anything. Once, a long time ago (probably before Google), it functioned. Now, it doesn't. Cross tropes 'Executive Meddling' with 'They Changed It, Now It Sucks'. There's a pretty solid reason College Humor makes fun of Google. Easy fucking target.

If you rely solely on your Youtube income to survive, then you've got bigger things to worry about than your "content haven". Perhaps getting a real job would be right up your alley.
So what qualifies as a real job?

I need to know in case I don't have a "real" one, I mean...

Do you not feel that undermines and misleads people by claiming a title or asking others to refer to you as such? I could tell someone to take some aspirin and boom guess what, I'm a doctor. Sure, I may not have spent 8 years in med school, but I'm a doctor.

Sit. Down.
Well, we've codified already what qualifies as a LICENSED doctor. You got a plan for further liscencing carpentry?

I'll stand, thank you, and you won't do a thing about it.

Everyone sitting comfortably?

Well, anyway.

I kinda get it to some extent. Youtube is a business. It can't just give away free money. If you videos don't make money, youtube is not in any business to give it to your freely.

I won't say that making videos for Youtube isn't a "Real job" but, Youtube is not your employer just because you upload videos there, they are not entitled to give you money, and if they do, it is a Partnership, that relies upon you bringing in a profit for the the site.

As such, It's understandable that Youtube and it's advertising partners may decide they no longer want to monetize certain videos and such.

I think the reasons are kinda trivial myself, but, I'm not an advertiser. So, as much as I disagree, it's a position of ignorance.

Ultimately, advertising is dying. It's been dying for years. And it'll go out and take websites, content creates and a whole bunch of other stuff with it.

Relying upon it, is kinda foolish, and if you're in this industry, I think you have to realise it's time to change how you're getting revenue.

Don't mind Grandpa. They dont understand that times have changed and most of the world is digital. What they assume are "real jobs" are becoming rare now and in todays standards, a jobs a job. If you get paid for it, its a job.

Maybe they assume creativity is not a real job. Gotta tell my writers and director friends. Hell, anyone in media should listen to, Kina on their wise wisdom of a real job.

Also, is there a reason Kina seems to think we're in a schoolroom with him and that he has authority to tell us to sit? I'm just wondering where that delusion of his came from.

I am sitting down but not comfortable. My ass hurts. Damn train.

Anywho, i get your point about advertising. Its dying but it has itself to blame. People being over burdened with ads if you click one link has caused major annoyance, which then leads to people using ad... am i allowed to say it? Clickbait, malware, virus, scams, and that new creepy way of suggesting you things that you clicked on once but you now see on all sites ypu go on. Holy fuck too many of them. Yes websites depend on them but they need to take back control.

Sidenote: Is it true Hulu has ads? So you pay for a monthly service and you have advertisement during programming? Have it before and after, thats fine. Not during.

Well, somebody over in Wild West posted this...

...so maybe he's just doing a Trump reference?

Honestly, the whole schtick stinks of the t-word-that-may-or-may-not-be-allowed-to-be-mentioned-now-I-don't-know-alright. Being a Trump reference would not negate that. Actually, I'd say it'd reinforce it.

Yes, hulu has ads. But you can pay an extra couple of bucks to make sure they don't pop up.

*shrug* This day and age, I wouldn't discount it.
Just do what I've been doing and ignore them.

I'd rather lampshade the matter. He's trying to look big and it's not working.

It's easy. From now on, everyone should stand on their desks like in Dead Poets Society when he demands we sit. Let us all pay homage to the late Robin Williams, I say. In fact, let's bring a bunch of desks to Google Headquarters and do it there! That'll show 'em!

Because it's the equivalent of trying to check every drop of water for disease, five billion minutes of video are uploaded every hour trying to check them all manually is next to impossible.
