While not numbered, the Sands of Time trilogy was brilliant. I also think that the Fallout series is really solid all the way through, and Bethesda has done a great job of bringing the universe of the first two games very well into the modern generation of gaming.

I agree with you that Portal 2 is definitely not a cash in and will undoubtedly be fun, and Valve's track record with sequels will back that up. It's just that the concept behind Portal seems to have been fully explored in the first game, and wasn't really in need of reiteration.
