It depends on the game naturally. Personally I feel ~30 is the sweet spot for most fast paced games like CoD4 or TF2, with less than that it just feels empty to me even if the maps were relatively small.

I don't mind steam integration, or even lack of mods. But matchmaking with no proper servers is an instant turn-off for me, I'm not bying it now. No disrespect to console gamers, but if I wanted console online I'd buy a console instead of PC. For console gamers who might wonder what the fuss...
