I think people need to remember that how MMOs function isn't necessarily common knowledge, especially to the console market. I would think DCUO is the first MMO most of its users have played. And despite how simple it seems to us that are in the know, the general public seems to have a really...
I'm going to say Morrowind, the world was huge and you could wander around indefinitely, though there are longer main stories out there. There was just a certain immensity and depth to the narrative of Morrowind. Also due to the detailed history the story kinda started before the gameplay.
Took me a moment to realize the poll was asking about soccer, I thought it was weird that somebody was mentioning football at this time of year... Which probably tells you how much of a crap I give about the World Cup. Football (international usage) seems a lot like basketball except it's slower...

Definitely WoW here, though I definitely logged a ton of time on Fallout 3 and Morrowind. And Picross 3D, I think I've put about 60 hours into it.
Edit: seeing Halcyeon's post, Civ as well I can't even imagine how much time I've spent playing the various incarnations.

Definitely check the reviews for Phantom Hourglass first though, the Ocean Temple was game-breaking for me at least... Don't know about Spirit Tracks. Also of the Castlevania games Portrait of Ruin is probably the best starting point.
I've found Picross3D incredibly addictive, Retro Games Challenge is a gem if you can find it, those are the two on my shelf with the most universal appeal.
Oh yeah, and /agree on getting a DSLite over a DSi
