never happens in the civilized country i live in cause we aren't a bunch of dumbshits wit a government dumb enough to follow a dated law that lets any idiot get hold of a gun.

So uhm yeah. How exactly is someone offing themself in public something that is a US thing? How does the presence of a gun seem to make any sort of difference in the suicide rate. This was the action of someone who was mentally unstable (either by nature or by nurture) crying out for violently for attention to what ever brought them to that point. That happens every where on the globe.


Edit: Also, its not entirely abnormal for grades usually stopping at 7 to attend an elementary school. There are several school systems across the US where the in district structure for whatever reason runs K-7 and HS runs 8-12. Usually in older schools where the facilities only had two campus sites. Typically in older communities, usually in poorer communities. Its certainly not common, but it is not unheard of.(a variant I saw of it in Ky for example had elementary school consisting of k-7, middle school consisting of 8-9, and HS consisting of 10-12)

Not that I disagree, and I am only playing devils advocate here; If the human body has spent 2000 years fine tuning our survival instincts, and a member of the species looses the advantage of those 2000 years and gets killed off, isn't that the point of natural selection? To weed out the candidates of a species so that negative traits are not passed on?

First of all, it's "loses." Secondly, 2,000 years? Where did you get those figures? That's about when Jesus was born, and I'd say we've been around for longer than that.

This is not 'natural selection' you chump. Suicide contravenes just about every survival instinct the human body has spent 2000 years fine tuning. This is as unnatural as anything can get. A 14 year old should not ever, ever on this green Earth, feel that their death is a necessity, nor should 70 other children see something that trained adults still have trouble seeing.

A child is dead! Let me reiterate that: a child is dead! Someone barely into their adolescence was so damaged he was able to fight every urge in his body and take his own life; violently and in the presence of others.

This is a fucking travesty of the highest order.

Bit of a weird one... not much you can say until more details come out, but I agree with @Kvaedi, it's incredibly hard to accidentally shoot yourself... all the accidents that do happen are usually because they didn't realise it was loaded. I suppose he could have not realised, and was messing around pretending to shoot himself in the head... but really!?

I understand sarcasm its just no one was suggesting that videogames were to blame so i didnt see why this needed to be included. It feels like hes assumed videogames are somewhere involved and decides to make a comment like that. It doesnt fit with the rest of the thread any more than it would if i were to start talking about gardening.

When ever something like this happens with mid-teens involved the media always jump to the conclusion that video games were involved... What our clever friend @itchcrotch did, was take this generalisation, and jumped the gun, pointing it out early. As the internet is full of morons, and people with no wit, or sense of humour, he even made the game as reiculous as possible, and the timescale completely absurd, to further accentuate that he was joking. That's how jokes work... They take situations and change something to make them funny... Of course no-one had blamed videogames (yet... hint, hint), but that doesn't mean that he cannot bring the joke in... It's called thinking outside the box, and seeing the bigger picture.

As for the taste of the joke... yes a kid is in intensive care after shooting himself... but the genious of this particular joke is that it isn't aimed at the kid, or the tragedy, but at the media that normally surronds this kind of event...

Eh. I think his point is that tens of thousands of people, a disproportionate amount of whom are teenagers, kill themselves each year. One case is unfortunate but also far from unheard of, and thus not really worth a large emotional investment from those unconnected to it.

He was airlifted to Dartmouth and as far as I've heard, he's still alive. Honestly, this is such a shock. Walpole is an extremely small town and incidents like this are completely unheard of.

In other news, the New Hampshire State House in Concord has recently passed a bill allowing guns "on college campuses" and would "allow loaded weapons in vehicles and eliminate the need for a concealed carry permit." The Senate, following this incident, has thankfully postponed voting...

I'd really like to hear you justify any of this. I lived in Walpole for five years and it's about as close to a picture-perfect community as I've ever seen. I mean yeah, it's a little boring, but besides that? Also, North Walpole is NOT Walpole.

Every person who spouts off "Well if he wants to kill himself, he should do it and decrease the surplus population!" is part of the damn problem. Every person who blames the person who tried to commit suicide instead of asking why, is part of the goddamn problem. Every person who thinks they're "better" because they were bullied and pushed around and "got over it", is part of the goddamn, fucking problem.

EDIT: Oh, I seem to have forgotten that this is the internet. Anonymity and all that. Why should people show compassion for someone they don't know, after all? Honestly, what annoys me is that I knew two people back in high school who both committed suicide. It's not something that any decent person should be able to hear and immediately go "Oh, well, no loss." I wasn't even close to them, and I still would have to smack myself if I caught myself thinking that the world is better off without them.

Suicide isn't a laughing matter. There's hardly ever no reason for it. And there's hardly ever no way to stop it.
