never happens in the civilized country i live in cause we aren't a bunch of dumbshits wit a government dumb enough to follow a dated law that lets any idiot get hold of a gun.

Suicide accounted for 22.1% of all deaths amongst all young men aged 15-24
Took all of 30 seconds to find this here.

So uhm yeah. How exactly is someone offing themself in public something that is a US thing? How does the presence of a gun seem to make any sort of difference in the suicide rate. This was the action of someone who was mentally unstable (either by nature or by nurture) crying out for violently for attention to what ever brought them to that point. That happens every where on the globe.

Edit: Also, its not entirely abnormal for grades usually stopping at 7 to attend an elementary school. There are several school systems across the US where the in district structure for whatever reason runs K-7 and HS runs 8-12. Usually in older schools where the facilities only had two campus sites. Typically in older communities, usually in poorer communities. Its certainly not common, but it is not unheard of.(a variant I saw of it in Ky for example had elementary school consisting of k-7, middle school consisting of 8-9, and HS consisting of 10-12)

Not that I disagree, and I am only playing devils advocate here; If the human body has spent 2000 years fine tuning our survival instincts, and a member of the species looses the advantage of those 2000 years and gets killed off, isn't that the point of natural selection? To weed out the candidates of a species so that negative traits are not passed on?
First of all, it's "loses." Secondly, 2,000 years? Where did you get those figures? That's about when Jesus was born, and I'd say we've been around for longer than that.

Edit: Okay, I'm an idiot. Apparently you were just commenting on what somebody else said. (Though my ppoint about the spelling still stands.)

This is not 'natural selection' you chump. Suicide contravenes just about every survival instinct the human body has spent 2000 years fine tuning. This is as unnatural as anything can get. A 14 year old should not ever, ever on this green Earth, feel that their death is a necessity, nor should 70 other children see something that trained adults still have trouble seeing.

A child is dead! Let me reiterate that: a child is dead! Someone barely into their adolescence was so damaged he was able to fight every urge in his body and take his own life; violently and in the presence of others.

This is a fucking travesty of the highest order.
2000 years? Where did you get those figures? As far as I know we've been around for much longer than that.

No one but you was making accusations like that until you decided to. Cmon man this isnt the time.
Wow... someone who doesn't understand sarcasm...

OT: Personally I thought it was Mondays that the kids didn't like in school... wasn't that what Bob Geldof was singing about??

Bit of a weird one... not much you can say until more details come out, but I agree with @Kvaedi, it's incredibly hard to accidentally shoot yourself... all the accidents that do happen are usually because they didn't realise it was loaded. I suppose he could have not realised, and was messing around pretending to shoot himself in the head... but really!?

Walpole isn't too far from me. Wouldn't call it a happy place.

Not a "shoot yourself in the head" place, either, but still.

Hanover is a pretty nice place. Hear Concord's improved, though I haven't been that far in ages. I'd steer clear of most of Cheshire County. Well, if I could. I live right near it. Kinda...Can't help it.
Wait... Hampshire is nowhere near Cheshire!? And Hannover is a different country all together...! :p

I understand sarcasm its just no one was suggesting that videogames were to blame so i didnt see why this needed to be included. It feels like hes assumed videogames are somewhere involved and decides to make a comment like that. It doesnt fit with the rest of the thread any more than it would if i were to start talking about gardening.

That's how sarcasm works...

When ever something like this happens with mid-teens involved the media always jump to the conclusion that video games were involved... What our clever friend @itchcrotch did, was take this generalisation, and jumped the gun, pointing it out early. As the internet is full of morons, and people with no wit, or sense of humour, he even made the game as reiculous as possible, and the timescale completely absurd, to further accentuate that he was joking. That's how jokes work... They take situations and change something to make them funny... Of course no-one had blamed videogames (yet... hint, hint), but that doesn't mean that he cannot bring the joke in... It's called thinking outside the box, and seeing the bigger picture.

As for the taste of the joke... yes a kid is in intensive care after shooting himself... but the genious of this particular joke is that it isn't aimed at the kid, or the tragedy, but at the media that normally surronds this kind of event...

I hope that clears the matter, or are we going to have to call in this guy:

Oh wow, another unstable kid killed themselves. Whatever.
Oh, I'm sorry, is the suicide attempt of a 14 year old in front of dozens of students not enough entertainment for you? Maybe you would prefer someone links to the brutal torturing of babies, would that be good enough? You disgust me more than I've ever been disgusted by a comment on the internet.
Eh. I think his point is that tens of thousands of people, a disproportionate amount of whom are teenagers, kill themselves each year. One case is unfortunate but also far from unheard of, and thus not really worth a large emotional investment from those unconnected to it.

I'm from the town in which this happened. I went to that same elementary school and ate lunch in that same cafeteria. So spare me your disinterested, misanthropic sarcasm, please.

He was airlifted to Dartmouth and as far as I've heard, he's still alive. Honestly, this is such a shock. Walpole is an extremely small town and incidents like this are completely unheard of.

In other news, the New Hampshire State House in Concord has recently passed a bill allowing guns "on college campuses" and would "allow loaded weapons in vehicles and eliminate the need for a concealed carry permit." The Senate, following this incident, has thankfully postponed voting...

I'd really like to hear you justify any of this. I lived in Walpole for five years and it's about as close to a picture-perfect community as I've ever seen. I mean yeah, it's a little boring, but besides that? Also, North Walpole is NOT Walpole.

You must be from Windham County.

Any time a thread about teenagers killing themselves or others pops up, I can always be assured it will soon be flooded by tons of commenters desperate to show how much they don't care.

Every person who spouts off "Well if he wants to kill himself, he should do it and decrease the surplus population!" is part of the damn problem. Every person who blames the person who tried to commit suicide instead of asking why, is part of the goddamn problem. Every person who thinks they're "better" because they were bullied and pushed around and "got over it", is part of the goddamn, fucking problem.

A fourteen year-old tried to kill himself. Show some damn compassion.

EDIT: Oh, I seem to have forgotten that this is the internet. Anonymity and all that. Why should people show compassion for someone they don't know, after all? Who cares if suicide rates are sky-rocketing? It doesn't affect them! Little kids and teenagers are spawns of the devil! Even though everyone was one at some point!

I suppose it's too much to ask people to actively care for something like this, but is it really so hard to, say, think "Oh, that's a shame." instead of "Good riddance to the unproductive fuck."?

I applaud you, sir.

I'm honestly more annoyed that the average person at the complete lack of human response to this because I'm from this town myself.

I'm just one state over.

Honestly, what annoys me is that I knew two people back in high school who both committed suicide. It's not something that any decent person should be able to hear and immediately go "Oh, well, no loss." I wasn't even close to them, and I still would have to smack myself if I caught myself thinking that the world is better off without them.

Suicide isn't a laughing matter. There's hardly ever no reason for it. And there's hardly ever no way to stop it.

One really has to applaud the size of balls that some people display in this thread.

BEHIND A FUCKING SCREEN!

Is there simply no bottom some users will sink to to get a good laugh ? Over someone who shot himself in the head ? You wanna get funny, huh ? Try me then.

The most extreme thing most 'comedians' here survived, is most likely the common cold. According to this,

the kid survived a gunshot. TO THE HEAD.

Ha comma ha comma ha.

Draconian, keep us posted. Let us know if the kid pulls through.

For fuck sake i understand sarcasm. My point is that no one has yet blamed videogames. I know this is a gamin site but that doesnt mean everything needs to link back to video games no matter what. Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. Anyone could of said what he said. point is no one did because no one is stupid enough to link this to videogames. This joke would at least be reasonable if someone had tried to link this to videogames. But no one has. This is simply lashing out at the media for something they havent done. he is the prick in a group who needs to leed the conversation to the one point he is interested in. Everyone knows that guy. A child has shot himslef and the best he can do is make a stab at the media's hysteria over videogames because thats all he cares about. Not the kid but the possible shit flinging aftermath. Thats vile. Theres no need to be so patronising. Most people are capable of having a mature conversation. Leave speaking down to someone in your teenage years and stop behaving like an immature prick. If you think this is genious then you really dont encounter much thinking in day to day do you? See its funny cause i inferred you were dum (if you really are stupid this is a joke, i dont know you or anything about you i just think your making a ridiculous point and im imitating you to demonstrate how low brow sarcasm is.)

nope. but it will still blow everyones mind if you try. just not in the good way.
On the bright side, it's already blown the mind of the kid in the story. Comedy the breaks the walls of causality is pretty hardcore.

I already know I'm going to hell.
