This stuff happens all the time in the world. I'll nto glorify one and lose the chance on the others.

So blanket statement hurray for all that do this.

EDIT:

This would also probabnly have a lot more impact (on me at least) if it was written in non-regeional terms. or at least explained more as to why most of that stuff her father was saying was so important. Not saying its bad that it is, but when you throw around names and events and such and someone who is not Syrian reads this, then much of the power and emphasis of importance gets lost.

Haha fair point, I attributed qualities to it that weren't in the original post, sorry about that. Disregarding the "loudness" of the post (I'm chuckling at myself for being silly right now), I concur that saying it shouldn't be posted here is going to far, but calling him troll or douchebag is not. I suppose it probably irks people that he cared enough to post in the topic to tell people how little he cared.
Douchebag? I dunno. Am I supposed to care about a story written on a blog that's supposedly based on real events just because it mimics a classic story of "Good triumphs against evil"? Just because someone doesn't exibit an emotional response doesn't mean he's supposed to. As for trolling, I doubt he was trying to get people to argue.
I don't mean to say that I agree that he was trolling or a douchebag, just that that response is a legitimate one. I'm also dubious as to the authenticity of the story, but I think that it is a very touching one. As for the statement of not caring, it just seems a little hypocritical to take the time to state that you don't care about something rather than just passing it by. I respect that you're not drawn in by the classic "Good triumphs against evil," but I'm totally a sucker for it. Even if this isn't a legitimate story it contains good virtues and an example of a strong character that I can agree with.

Yeah, sure ok. While everyone will find this "inspirational" what I read is embellished facts of a spoiled rich girl.

The funny thing to me is, that as the servants stand there clapping today, a week later you come to find out that the entire family has been slaughtered. Most likely by one of their "servants"

Yeah, not really impressed, cause it really accomplished nothing positive.
Be cynical all you want, I'll be over here finding the story touching.

I don't think this story is a case of "good vs. evil".

Mainly because I don't think good and evil exist.

Just different shades of gray.

This however, is a clear case of keeping one's freedom in the face of oppression.

And having read through some of her other blog posts; which are mainly her views on different things happening in her country and the world.

I have fact-checked some of these, and they hold up under scrutiny.
So, I am inclined to believe this story as well.

Gee, a story about people I don't care about in a place I don't care about. Fun.
Then you clearly don't have a shred of humanity in you.

Good day.

No need to be a dick about it. If you don't care, fair enough, just leave it. Posting about how little you care either makes you sound like a troll or a misanthropic douchebag.
^---- The non jerk response.

There's a difference folks. One makes you look equally as bad as the original poster, and another explains the responders distaste for the comment in a civilized fashion.

Fair enough.

Though your post makes you look like a smartass.

Sorry, but a different opinion is not the same as loudly declaring the lack of your opinion. Also I recommend you read through the text again if you have enough interest being that who the men were and the reason they needed to be told off is necessary to understanding most peoples' stance on this. Also as for the Freespeech comment, you may have the right to say it, but others have the right to criticize it.
I just wanted to applaud you for the bolded statement. So many people seem to treat freedom of speech as a carte blance to act as misanthropes without criticism or consequence, and that is not how the world works.

This story - if true - is the kind of thing that renews faith in humanity. The story that doesn't get told, a lot of times is what happens afterwards ... which sometimes can be worse than what would originally have happened.

It is my hope that does not come to pass.

Really? I was going for a tired sarcastic guy, as I see your style of comments all the time, and always leave a sour feeling, as with a couple of words changed it doesn't make you look like a ass, and I'd be right there beside yeah going "Agreed". But when worded as it is all I feel like expressing is a sigh.

Well... maybe I was reading a little too much into that person's post. But I got a distinctive "bigoted" vibe from it; which pissed me off, and I responded as such.

If that poster really is not bigoted, then I apologize.

If they are, then I don't.

I got a bit of both vibe. On one hand, they are being a bit of a dick. On the other hand, they're being honest. Someone just died right now, that you have no idea who they are. Do you care? I highly doubt it. I think that guy was just expressing that sentiment.

Ehh... sadly... I don't think Democracy on its own will bring that about.

It certainly hasn't brought equality to the U.S.

But, free speech, and not being criminalized for existing; as I suspect the young woman in that story was, would be a great start.

Fine. But the way they chose to express that sentiment made me think they were bigoted, which is a significant step above normal jerk/dick/douchebag.

Bigotry is a view I simply find impossible to respect or even listen to.

That's pretty inspiring. I'm glad the guys weren't too fanatic to be convinced.
It is dismissive to describe most of these over-zealous assholes as fanatics. They aren't a world away from the kind of people who dance in the street when hearing a world leader has been shot and dumped in a bag in the sea like a character from the Sopranos. Most the people who support an extremist position tend to be ordinary folk who have allowed themselves to be convinced that religious opression is the best way.

Heck, the vast number of BNP supporters aren't actually racists, just ignorant folk who bought into a xenophobic ideology because it offers simple, drastic solutions to their concerns about the EU, immigrants and muslims.

I think you can afford to give people a little more credit. After all, not everyone is ignorant. And those who are can at least go read up.
