And we have a Bingo! Really, not sure how dead naming Quinn, which is still a shit move imo, but w/e, is transphobic, since she's not being called by a male name, but making the suggestion Nicholas Cage plays Wu (hurr hurr, because he'll take any role), is a transphobic as fuck thing to say.The_Kodu said:Either that or a few people here were suggesting having a guy play Brianna Wu.
I think its less trans phobic and more how some view her as being unhinged which Cage (used to) play well.Jux said:And we have a Bingo! Not buying it, one could easily pick an actress to make the same point.Darks63 said:I think its less trans phobic and more how some view her as being unhinged which Cage (used to) play well.Jux said:And we have a Bingo! Bring it on i say that SVU ep was funny as shit Ice T explaining gaming and the level up stuff were the best.
About the only Female actress that comes to mind that does crazy well is Charlize Theron. I do agree though that going to a male right off the bat is a little suspicious but I wanted to play DA.Jux said:Not buying it, one could easily pick an actress to make the same point.Darks63 said:I think its less trans phobic and more how some view her as being unhinged which Cage (used to) play well.Jux said:And we have a Bingo! That's fine, I'm not trying to jump on you for it. I'm just sayin, it sounds like a weak dodge. Even if, and this is a big if, they didn't -mean- to be transphobic about it, one would still be aware that naming a male actor to play a transwoman, on the face of it, looks transphobic to pretty much most people (that aren't transphobes anyway). No excuse for doing that, claiming obliviousness there is beyond the pale.Darks63 said:About the only Female actress that comes to mind that does crazy well is Charlize Theron. Actually, that's been done before:Kingjackl said:It's going to be hard to translate online harassment to a film I reckon. Don't get me wrong, it's a horrible thing, but from a visual standpoint wouldn't it just be a lot of shots of her sitting at a computer reading disgusting tweets and messages?
Eddie Redmayne is playing a transgender role in the Danish Girl, is that transphobic?Jux said:A novel idea, getting a transwoman to play a transwoman in a movie. But no, barring that, I would think the subject, in this case Wu, would want to be played by a woman, not a man. What's the point in having a male actor play her? Is this some biopic about her transitioning, or is she just some side character maybe in a Quinn movie?
I find the Cage comment indefensible.
I can think of a few actresses that I've thought "did crazy" pretty well (as a general comment on actresses "doing crazy", not whether Wu should be portrayed as such). Fairuza Balk was great in The Craft as Nancy. And I have a memory of Lena Heady's character in Dredd being unstable (and well acted), though it's been a while since I've seen that. Kate Mara in American Horror Story, whose character was pretty unbalanced after death. Ooh then there's Famke Janssen, who was fantastic towards the end of Hemlock Grove when her character was losing it. And Troian Bellisario I thought was good in Pretty Little Liars at the times her character was having difficulties keeping her shit together mentally (although not "crazy").Darks63 said:About the only Female actress that comes to mind that does crazy well is Charlize Theron.
