I think AndyVale had the right idea. You will only get out of Twitter what you put in.
I think the motto of twitter should be changed from 'What are you doing?' to, 'What are you thinking about now?' The best way to get the most out of tiwtter is to follow interesting people on twitter and NOT BE A DEADPAN F###WIT! to those compaining that "oh, i don't understand this new technology, so therefore it must be stupid and pointless": Great! Stay the hell off it and let us who want to use it properly get on with it.
Twitter in its best form is NOT a barebones Facebook with everyone chanting mundane thoughts with the same enthusiaism as thowing a rag at wall about every single thing that happens to them, it a platform in which indivduals can impart knowledge upon others, keep loved ones in the loop while overseas, link to sites with entertaining videos, update scores and promote giveaways and competitions.
The trick is to follow people Who You Actually Want to Hear From. Comedians are some of the best obviously, because they turn news and events in their lives into jokes that may never make it to the stage or television event. I joined Twitter because Trent Reznor from NIN (whom many know is at the forefront of many marketing and internet revolutions) was on this site. It gives you a chance to interact with the famous (and their fake counterparts who are sometimes better entertaining) on a level never seen before.
In sumarary; when Twitter is used properly as a tool in which to enlighten others about interesting things that happen in your life and crack funnies with the stars, it is the new revolution in social networking.
When not used properly; you get 20 million people complaining about swine flu and their missing socks.
If some of you whingers stay off twitter, i will be most glad.
