When I think of classics of the genre, I tend to think more of the Sugarhill Gang, Public Enemy, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash and all the rest like that. I'm a fan of modern day alternative hip hop too, as it focuses less on the genre stereotypes, and has its roots in the social dissent of the groups of the mid 90s.
But yes, I too scoff at philistines that say rap and hip hop have nothing musical to contribute to society. Generally, genres are much too wide to simply dismiss outright.

I don't like Rap, because a lot of it is just playing with Cubasic to create a nice loop and than speak some bullsh*t over it. Or, if you're really lazy, just "sample" somebody else's loops. Sure, there are a couple of Rap tracks (I won't call something a song that didn't bother to include a melody) that are fun, but in the grand scheme of things, it's rubbish.
How many Rap tracks from 2002 are still played on the radio today? Or from 1996? Rap is not music like that of The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Elvis Presley or Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner. Contemporary Rap music will not be listened to in 40 years, because it's disposable. You listen to it for a couple of days, weeks, maybe months and then throw it out. As such, it's much closer to Twitter than Art.
Why don't you tell us how many rap tracks are still played on the radio today? Seeing as how most major metropolitan areas cater to many different crowds, I'd say there are likely a number of radio stations in most major cities that do.
And I often enjoy how people speculate that old rock 'n' roll, for all it's piracy, (you are aware that popular bands of the 50s onwards furiously ripped off old jazz and blues musicians and "whitened" the music up, right?) is somehow more original then techno and hip hop since they rely on sampling. All music relies on a certain brand of sampling, I hate to inform you, since all music is inspired from music that came before it. Sampling is just a literal translation of this process.
And how do you what is going to be around and what other types of music won't? This type of idiotic pop culture snobbery is a rather misguided attitude and if I had to wager, I think none of it is going to be around far in the future.
