YOu know, its funny, the more popular somehting is, the more vocal the people who don't like it are. In fact, i have seen more people just be blatantly rude to people who liked the movie than anywhere else. It makes for some interesting discussions, but man does it ever get tedious after a while. No biggy though, everybody is entitled to thier own opinion. Besides, hate doesn't last as long as enjoyment. Soon the Avatar haters will find somehting else to do or hate, and we fans will be left in peace.

Nope, I'll always consider Avatar exactly what it is. Shit wrapped up in a beautiful box, complete with bow and matching Sci-Fi paper. At least, unless it does me a favor and just dies.

Regardless, I'm not generally one to hate on a movie without my reasons. It's boring, poorly written, poorly acted, boring, the action was lame, and it's nothing we haven't seen before.

Well... my point was supposed to be that the hate for Avatar seems especially bad. Besides, i merely pointed out the concept, you went out ofyour way to put in particulars. I saw Avatar the day it came out, first screening, the whole sha bang. But leaving the theater only to realize it was just another mediocre film with some 3D computer generated BS thrown in. If you ask me I'd say that if you managed to convince yourself that far you might as well paint yourself blue, put on a loincloth and jump off a cliff. But like you said, we're all entitled to our own opinion.

you think so? it seems like there is a much higher percentage of people on the escapist who hated the movie than who liked it. ON this website, i would say it is more like 75% hate and 25% like. then again, outside of the website, i have found it to be teh other way around. Oh well, soon the haters will get bored and go ***** about something else and leave us fans alone.

To be honest... you really didn't miss much. I mean, there were some bits were it was good in 3D, but for the most part, unless you sat really close and could only see the screen, it was kind of a pain to watch. Thus why i get so pissed when people use the whole "it was just a technological spectacle" argument as to why they didn't like it. I like the movie, not the tech behind it. Likeable cahracters, well established universe and decent stroyline, that is what makes a good movie, not special effects and graphics.

Either way, the extended version of Avatar will be coming out in theaters this summer in 3d, you still have a chance!

I saw it in iMax with my family, so it was an enjoyable enough experience, but had I gone alone I don't think I would've lasted. The story is so by-the-numbers that I literally took in the plot on autopilot; that's how generic it was: I didn't even have to be fully conscious to know where it's going.

And it's not like I even hate cliches. They have their place, and cliches are often just euphemism for story/character devices that are good enough to stick. But I have to draw the line at a movie that doesn't, at any point, make an effort to use an idea of its own. It's totally devoid of conceptual or narrative creativity. Deus ex machinas and highly unlikely coincidences are literally the foundation for everything that happens in the story. Most of the characters (say, except for Sigourney Weaver, and even then it's a stetch) are critically underwritten and, at the same time, rather overdone. The final battle, after the initial spectacle, is actually one of the most boring action scenes I've seen in a good while; they ditched the potential for an exciting cat-and-mouse guerilla clash that could have been much more fleshed out. Instead, what we get basically amounts to the same old, tired set-up of two armies clashing against each and devolving into little more than attrition.

As for the political, environmental angle, I'll keep it brief: if you want the audience to learn profound and sufficient lessons about the environment, don't distract them with pretty explosions, virtual, inter-species sex, and an ecosystem that has very little to do with ours. I'd rather watch a documentary in this case.

But this is a good point, why does everyone seem so offended by this movie? You act as if its very existense somehow degrades the quality of your lives. Seriously, if you hate the film so much, why do you all spend so much time here telling us!

By the title of this thread I gathered it was for people looking forward to the release, not for the beginning of a flame war. I don't go and stand in a dvd store telling people not to buy a certain title because I hated it. That would be somewhat hypocitical in its very nature no?

Actually, I have honestly no idea either. I really don't know why some people are so offended by it. Because it was a big budgeted special effects film that made a lot of money? They've been existing ever since there was special effects in the first place! If you don't like it, why spend so much of your time badmouthing it? Just because it's around and made a lot of money doesn't make the films you watch any less great.

So what, you didn't like it? I didn't like the Blind Side, so I pushed it out of my memory, and avoided places where I'd have to talk about it, because I don't want to waste precious brain cells thinking about that waste of time. But some of the people, you'd swear they went to see Avatar just so they could complain about it.

So yeah, the reason why some people develop reactions similar to those people would get after learning that someone had killed their pets is beyond me. It's a dumb popcorn movie, it's for sitting down for 3 hours, shutting off your brain, and enjoying for what it is. It's not a fucking Isaac Asimov novel, so stop judging it like it is one!

Not to be personally offensive, I know you?re a smart guy (and I love your sig ), but I see this argument all the time from people who can?t actually formulate a real discussion. People who loved the movie think the ones who hated it should just shut up and stop bashing it, but there?s really no reason why. Why should only those who loved it be encouraged to sing praise while those who hated it stay silent and move on with their lives. It?s an attack on the person, not the argument. The effort needed to hate something has been seriously overrated here, and so has the time taken to badmouth it. This is something I?d explain to a kid who doesn?t understand how society works outside his own views, but I?m sure you get my point.

Anyway, I?ve explained why the movie is so offensive to me on this thread already. It?s extremely arrogant. They spent millions of unnecessary dollars to make something mediocre. As I said before, as a movie it was okay, nothing special. But as the ?revolutionary? highest grossing movie of all time? Damn right it?s influenced my life. You?d argue that I should focus on just my own life and pretend I live in a cave somewhere with my hands on my ears pretending I?m too aloof to think about anything but myself. We?re very social beings, and it does depress me that people gush over this severely overrated movie, that James Cameron (who does deserve praise for most of his other movies) becomes more of a movie legend for this film he took ten years to write and never even saw any of it until it was 75% done.

I don?t like how this is such a defining movie of our time, because like you said it?s just a popcorn flick. I wouldn?t treat it with such disdain if others wouldn?t treat it with such admiration. I hope I?ve helped ease your confusion a bit.

I don't understand why nobody in hollywood (or story corp as I like to refer it as now) understands that you can great visuals and good stories at the same time. Look at the Pixar films, espically Up. Think back to your first viewing of Up, did you even notice how natraul and great the animation and CGI looked? No, because one, it looks so good it looks REAL, and two, the story, characters, and themes were so great that you were concentrating on them. Why can't Avatar spend part of the 310 million budget on some decent writers? Why can't we have films were we can have our brain on and still enjoy it? Why is story being forgotten to make sure that random bug in the background does clip through the tree it is on? Why can't we have more films that can cause entire theaters to cry within ten minutes instead of films that make your head hurt when you think to hard about them?

It's the same with absolutely anything in the world. If there is an issue, a subject, be it tv or cinema or something more important that affects your local city/town/village you will find that every single person who is opposed towards it will make some noise. But do you ever hear from the supporters? No, they are happy and content and they keep quiet because it suits them.

Luckily the fans of Avatar have spoken and they have made it the highest grossing film ever made, which generally means LOTS of people went to see it. Granted, that was probably only half the number actually seeing it multiple times, but even so...

People tend to hate things because they are popular, because if they liked it too, they would be following the crowd. Not true, I like Avatar because I choose to, NOT because everyone else does. I flat out refused to buy MW2 when it came out, simply because everyone else was buying it. A few months later I bought it preowned and quite enjoyed the single player campaign, thus was proven wrong. I wasn't in it for the multiplayer, that's just not ma thang.

But my point stands, hype does not maketh/breaketh something. Just go in with an open mind and let it flow! I am also not against all these people who hate it, you're welcome to hate. Please just don't insist that we must also hate it. Thanks.

That is a good point, and as far as the thread's original purpose, perfectly justified. I do admit that the arguments me and the other haters made could be considered somewhat off topic, so I apologize for that. All I can say is in public threads like these where discussion is encouraged, good luck avoiding conflict.

It was a three hour tech demo that shoved all the flaws in your face. I could go on about the paper thin story, the unlikeable characters, the overused cliches and tropes, but the fact of the matter is that this was a bad movie. My point is this, A movie must stand up on its writing, narrative, and plot. If special effects are the primary focus, something has gone very very wrong.
