Hooray for the Zynga design philosophy that almost every Facebook game subscribes to these days. Make your games so horribly addictive that the first mass-produced human-machine implant is a Farmville patch that uses the owner's subconcious to control the game and eliminate addiction.

I don't know if Zynga make Cafe World or not (probably not, it'd be CafeVille) but I hope they're proud of their business practices. Their CO even went public saying their entire philosophy is to get people hooked. Other people copy it becuase it's brilliant business. They are brilliant businessmen but terrible human beings.

Agree with Ethan, its usually farmville. Still neglecting children over these lame-ass facebook games?
Its sad and pathetic and something else i can't quite find the distasteful word to discribe it.
Ikr?

Personally, if you HAVE to neglect your child because of a game, you should at least be playing a decent one.
Well I'm going to hell now. When I read that I could see the new review headline:

"Half Life: It's baby drowning good."

A costly and tragic lesson. Remember my fellow Escapists, when it comes to babies do not just add water.

You believe anything you read? Interesting. Nice to know anyone can convince you of something so easily. Did you know I read about a man that caught Big Foot? Amazing, huh?

Arrested? So she is still innocent. Will be interesting to see how many people will jump on the speeding bandwagon of words as fact and forget the justice in the criminal justice system.
Actually I believe, though I could be wrong, that America has started to employ the "Guilty until Proven Innocent" clause instead. So actually it might be presumed that she's guilty now until her defence, if she goes for it, proves her innocent.

Just my two cents
They haven't. If that was the case, anyone could accuse anyone of anything and they would be assumed guilty until the conclusion of a trial -- which could take months or even years to resolve. Any country that uses that... 'legal system', if you can call it that, is barbaric and unevolved.
I hate to say this but that really isn't the case, even with a system such as that one. There is still due process; that phrase is only usable once you get into the court system. You first actually need to be charged with a crime, the police need decent enough evidence to obtain an arrest warrant and they need to make sure they have enough evidence to hold their case in court.

Really the phrase isn't any different from the other one, except now its you defending your innocence, rather than the prosecution proving your guilt
I think you got the system wrong. Its 'Innocent until proven Guilty'. Unless they just had some big political change yesterday or something. We're talking about United States of America right? I'm not trying to be rude or anything

Games made by zynga go beyond the standard skinner box in that they PUNISH YOU if you don't play at certain times every day with various forms of your crops dying, or in the case of cafe world, your food going rotten.

Once again, Facebook proves how deadly and pointless it really is.

Still glad I never touched the thing.
Not that I'm supporting Facebook/Zynga etc. But these comments are frankly idiotic. Replace Facebook with 'watching TV' or 'on the Phone' and the situation is just as tragic. The key here is that the mother was not paying attention, and I'm a little surprised at some of the comments given that many are coming from the same people who will jump up to defend videogames whenever a news report even -hints- that they might have been involved in some inscrutable way.

I feel terrible for the mother, but this is just awful all around.

Wow. Hate is such a strong word when used in it's proper context instead of used as a flipant remark which I don't think was your intended use.
Why hate babies? You are either seriously warped and disturbed or just a pathetic ignorant person who hates on something he can never have himself.
With that attitude I do hope for the sake of humanity you never procreate.
It's not a matter of not being able to have one. I just don't see their purpose. I see them as a drain on the person who they "Belong" to while providing zero benefits. I don't like a thing about them, or them themselves. It's just almost biologically hardwired into our brains to be mesmerized by their "cuteness". It doesn't work with me.

If I were to adopt (I'd never do the baby thing) it'd be a child already past that awful state. Past being a larva.
Their purpose is to grow up and live life. What else are they going to do? They grow up and populate the world so humanity doesn't die out.

OT: I feel bad for her, I could never live with myself if I did something like that. Knowing that your neglect is the result of your own child's death is punishment enough.

She checked on him once, over a course of 10 minutes, saying it was justified because she felt "her son was preternaturally independent, and simply wanted to be alone."
..Oh, come the fuck on. Really, mother?

This is just insulting.

*Sigh*...
I fear that my exposure to this site has tainted my opinion of humanity, so much stupidity and wrong in this world.

Leaving a 1 year old alone in water is stupid no matter what your excuse is.
This.

What in the fuck was she thinking leaving him unsupervised in a bathtub? Checking him only once in a ten minute period of time?
Oh, yeah, you know, it's not like he's only a one year old kid and is completely dependent on someone to keep track of him and take care of him because kids don't have a grasp of what could be dangerous and what isn't.

That totally isn't the case.

Seriously, this is horrid.
