Defiantly Steve Harris but I'm also a big fan of Twiggy Ramirez and Nikki Sixx
Ack! How can you mention Nikki Sixx in "best bassists"?? The man boils his strings and has a signature Thunderbird! He is a joke.. Grr

I think people are getting "best" and "favorite" mixed up here.. The guy from Muse might do some cool stuff but compared to the likes of Wooten and Pastorious, he isn't that much. Another reason why I think its unfair to compare rock bassists to jazz/fusion bassists.

gonna have to say Les Claypool and Stanley Clarke

tho i know Victor Wooten is pretty darn good, always forget him tho
Without a shadow of a doubt Les Claypool and Victor Wooten! Also Geddy Lee of Rush deserves a special mention in my humble opinion.

and it's unfair to compare rock bassists with Wooten or Pastorius, completely different. You couldn't play a Jaco line in a metal song without looking like a major prick, and you could hit roots in a Fusion song without looking silly.

Bands name their bassists? How odd. I thought the only named bassist was Flea, so he gets my vote.

I'd like to nominate Bill Clements. Plays one handed and quite amazingly might I add. I've heard him play jazz and punk. He's great!

Rob Trujillo
The best Metallica bassist yet, and he even used to play with Ozzy! (OZZY!!!)
He was also in some band called Suicidal Tendencies that i could never be arsed to listen to.

Among the greats of Cliffy B of Metallica, Flea of Chili Peppers, Geddy Lee of Rush I would like to introduce (for those who do not know them already):

Justin Chancellor- Tool - If anyone tries to correct me you are wrong. If you don't believe me listen to their music.

Paz Lenchantin- A Perfect Circle- She's insane. When her fingers hit the neck, it's like God is emitting currents of spunk through the subwoofer.

EDIT: Also forgot to add Tim Commerford- Rage Against The Machine

Just listen for the bass solo. It's fantastic. Oh yes, my pick is Matt Freeman.

Also, this is the only good fan-made anime music video thing. Ever.

Honorable mention goes to Johnny Custom from Sasquatch and The Sickabillys, nobody plays the upright bass quite like that.

Geddy Lee (Rush)
Flea (RHCP)
Les Claypool
Cliff Burton (Metallica)

their all good.

In techinque and flashyness: Flea
In Influence: Geddy Lee
In pure Awesomeness: Claypool

I'm glad to see Cliff Burton well represented. He seems to have had a huge input with Metallica's music. After, he died, it was pretty much all down hill. Well, justice is good and black is alright, I guess, but they just weren't the same after he died.
