Crysis!

there I said it, I think Crysis is amazing, have fun with your boxy pixels while I kill commies with trees I just shot down!
agree but for the multiplayer singleplayer was ok, but multiplayer really was underappreciated see my other thread.

oblivion for single player FPS, although generally not considered a FPS because lack of guns that go bang, it is first person and you do shoot things such as arrows and spells.

Red Faction, it was fun, the story was interesting, the weapons were good, it had destructable environments before anyone else and the multiplayer kiced epic levels of ass.

Quake I, Quake II and Quake III. Haven't played number four.

Half-Life 2 and Portal.

Duke Nukem 3D

I think I'm done...

^Same

It's easily my favorite genre, and I'll play just about any FPS I can get my hands on (there have been quite a few). As far as gameplay, visuals, and realism goes. CoD:4 is my favorite. Next on the list would be Bioshock. I know quite a few people didn't care much for it, but there was something about it that just sucked me into it. I had difficulty turning it off to take a break once I started it. The environment, solid controls, and mild creepiness made for some excellent immersion.
Please, please do not use the words 'COD4' and 'Realism' in the same forum topic, unless you're pointing out the lack thereof.

My favorite FPS of all time... Operation Flashpoint.

Pfft... Don't even try to tell me that games like Operation Flashpoint, Rainbow Six, and other tactical shooters are somehow superior due to "realism". Sure, you have squad command, realistic scenarios, tactics (most of the time. online is another story) and none of that "suppressors and telescopic sights hinder range and accuracy" nonsense, but you're taking all of those realistic elements and enjoying them through a character that has the motor skills of a 60s robot crab. The sound and visuals are almost always bland and generic. All these self defeating elements take your realism and shove it down your throat while screaming "You're still just playing a soldier sim!"

No... Call of Duty isn't perfect as far as realism goes (anybody who has played for more than a minute on regular team deathmatch could tell you that), but the games that are- or to be more accurate- try to be generally suck in every other category to the point that they cross that line that separates enjoyable gaming and cheap/boring simulations. Call of Duty: 4 finds that happy medium and excels in every category making it a perfectly balanced breakfast.

Mirrors Edge. Story was trying to be too many things at once, gameplay was innovative, and definitely a fresh look at the FPS genre.
It's not really an FPS it's more an action/ adventure with guns.

I say Halo 1 is the best.

Half Life 2 is certainly the granddaddy of all FPS games it has a well crafted dystopian world which ties in believable characters that are hard not to care about. Also I can't think of many FPS games where vehicles are not annoying

not really an FPS fan, but my favourite was XIII. the story mode is about the only one in an FPS i've found truly gripping.
red faction is a close second

Doom

Plain and simple.

It's legendary, and never gets old. It has stood the test of time as a shooter like no other game out there.

Definitely Timesplitters: Future Perfect for the great maps, the mapmakers, the brilliant ability to totally customise your multiplayer games, the fact that it has reasonably good bots in multiplayer games, the consistently funny story (The only game to actually make me laugh without intentionally being a 'comedy' game) and the fantastic characters.

Timesplitters 4 cannot be released soon enough!
