It depends on the battle, but one of my top choices would be this:

What people don't understand is that a large amount of metal is greatly influenced by classical. Either works really.

Classical is a one trick pony.

Heavy metal, however, incorporates a variety of music into its sub genres. Folk, blues, techno, and even classical. Choosing between metal and classical is like choosing between a sammich and a sammich with ketchup. Heavy metal just has so much more.

Probably the best soundtrack that immediately jumps to mind is HL2. Mixed rock/techno with absolutely brilliant pairing of game and music tempo.

The "chase music" in one section of Water Hazard (might be "Apprehension and Evasion" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlD5uvOt_Sw ?) made me feel like a complete badass, and the Valve theme when Gordon dons the HEV suit sent chills up my spine. I thought Valve did a really great job of crafting music that enhances feeling of the game rather than distracting from it.

metal's better for combat. because it relies on more on adrenaline, a key chemical for battle.

classical is better for epic, grand moments, because of it's ability to add emotion and give a sense of scope to whatever's going on.

two examples:
1. Megaman X has great fighting music and is nearly relentless combat

2. Morrowind had the epic landscapes, stories, and intermittent fighting. Great for a minimalist classical score.

one more example of a blend:
Halo, combined these two types very well, giving a grand feeling of scale (especially with the gregorian chant sections), but transitioned greatly to rock feeling when fighting intensified.

Classical by far. I shouldnt really need to explain why.
Sure there are certain games that caters towards other genres, but overall, classical music can accomodate most games.

It's in Saint's Row 2.

And yes, it doesn't exactly inspire me to violence.
A stunning piece of composition.

Actually, metal (and all other derivatives of rock) are influenced mostly by jazz music. And although jazz has, at times, borrowed from western classical, the one was not derived from the other.

Metal is annoying in a game. Anything that's got a fast beat and is exciting is fine.

In Burnout: Paradise though I use exclusively classical tracks. There's nothing better than racing through a run down bridge, fighting for space and kicking other cars off the side in slow-mo when Mozart is playing.

This thread is an excellent place for me to rant about the horrid music from World at War. Double bassdrums and dropped D guitar works with games like Gears of War and when you play World at War in multiplayer but by God it was excrusiating to listen Treyarch's amateuristic attempt at music making. Games like Company of Heroes and pictures like Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan managed to bring tension with only classical instruments.

Though the score in CoD 4 had electric guitars I would probably praised WaW if the music was at least slightly like CoD 4.

First post here! I'd say metal, nothing quite like it for smashing up hoards of enemies.. I think this song would be great for an epic battle
