Not great as in "made them better", pretty much just great versions of them.

The recent revival of Sweeney Todd was pretty good.
No not the movie. Though the movie was good too.
The version of the play that I saw had the actors playing their instruments, and while this was originally a way to save money for what started out as a low-budget revival in England; by the time it got to LA so that I could see it, it had become an interesting artistic decision. All of the characters were playing instruments that suited their characters... trust me, you haven't lived until you've seen a middle-aged Mrs. Lovett play a triangle in one scene and a trombone in the next.

the pirates of penzance (warning: operetta), and/or cosi fan tutte (opera! the best opera out there).

I've gotta say, I really like Don Giovanni. I found that more immediately appealing than Cosi. Each to their own though.

Runner-ups include The Producers (Keep it gay keep it gay keep it gaaaay!!!), Sweeny Todd and The Blues Brothers. I haven't seen many musicals, I'd especially love to see Chicago, Cabaret and Les Miserables.
