Thats counts, right? If not then I have no other choice as I don't watch musicals.

Der Glöckner von Notre Dame- a german broadway musical based on the hunchback of notre dame book adaptations AND the disney movie. And it actually was pretty damn good.
Most of the songs came from the movie, and while it does follow the basic storyline from the movie as well, it remains to be pretty dark which is true to the book. Shame it stopped running.

I'm sorry but some of these picks are so stupid, if you want a musical for comedy purposes then yeah maybe one of the ones from the first page

If you want something beautiful: Phantom Of The Opera

All I ask of you is one of the single most beautiful songs ever written

Les Miserables is my favourite musical. It's ball-blowing brilliant.
this and ROCK OF AGES- all the badassness of classic rock put into a musical that is constantly taking the piss out of itself

A LITTLE GLASS VIAL! and that little glass vial goes into the gun like a battery...
And the Zydrate gun goes somewhere against your anatomy...

I'm here to also agree that:

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
REPO! The Genetic Opera
Phantom of the Opera

...are all great musicals worth watching.
ok now I have to end this.
AHH! AHH! then the gun goes off and it sparks and your ready for surgery, surgery, surgery, surgery.

Meet the Feebles. It's from 1989 and it's like hyper-violent muppets on crack.

Uh...

I'm going to have to go with 1776, because watching the US Founding Fathers dancing and singing is pretty god damned entertaining.

The surprising thing is that the overall portrayal of events in it is really close to what actually happened, even a lot of the offhand things they say are accurate quotes.

I've seen only few musicals, but of the few I've seen, they are pretty good:

Tommy (Featuring Music from The Who and starring Roger Daltrey and Ann Margaret. It's Rock Opera at its finest, I think)
Sweeney Todd
Moulin Rouge!
Oklahoma! (Can't ignore the classics. I actually saw this one performed on stage, it was amazing)
Gypsy (Again, another Stage performance. Not bad at all. I can't say a thing for the Bette Midler movie)
Pink Floyd's The Wall (Just saw it, it was perhaps the most chilling musical I've ever seen. Highly Recommended.)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (If you get a chance to see the stage play, I will envy you, I've only seen the movie multiple times)
Across The Universe (I thought it was heavy-handed in Beatles Music, but I'd still recommend it.)
and while the Olivia Newton-John version of Xanadu isn't considered great, I've heard the stage musical version of it is divine (If you see it, envy will cloud over my head)

Chicago. The film is great, but pales in comparison tot he stage show. A truly delightful experience.

Surely you prefer Commentary! The Musical? That had me in stitches. Brilliant parodies.

The absolute best musical ever has to be "Damn Yankees," but only the show that I was in back in 2005. Pretty much because I was in it, though.
