Wow. You had a lot to say :p

I agree with you but, while I have heard many people bashing the KH2 battle system, I found it far more engaging than its predecessor. It felt much more fast pace than the first and you gotta admit it looked pretty.

Another thing I loved was the highly improved Gummi Ship segments. The first game's ship levels were boring to the point of dreading each time you had to do it, the second game actually had me looking forward to the next high speed space adventure.

All in all, it felt far more in depth than the first and I gotta give them props for that.

Though I will disagree with you on Oblivion. Personally, I never saw what people were talking about when they referred to bad or dated graphics or unnatural character movements. Sure, they kinda move in a robotic march but it's a goddamn videogame filled with thousands of NPCs, what do you expect?

And I was actually debating over saying Final Fantasy X but the battle system...eh. I love the game to death and it's my favorite FF, but I'm not one for turn based combat but the fact that it kept my attention the whole way through despite my preference for real time fighting is amazing in it's own right. But still, I had to give it to Kingdom Hearts because only one other video game's story has been that engaging to me

Oh and definitely play Demon's Souls. It may start out slow and kick your ass countless times, call you "******," kick sand in your eyes while your down and make off with your girlfriend all at the same time but it'll keep you coming back for more until you finally best it and no game I've ever played has such a rewarding and satisfactory feeling when you finally beat a level.

KotOR.

Do I even need to explain why?
I think everyone else in this thread that has said KotOR has already explained why I like it.

Followed closely by:
Fallout 3
and
ME2.

Depends on how you view 'best'.
The best RPG's I ever played were actually kinda basic when you think about it. Secret of Mana and Grandia. SoM has NO side quests really, but is still my faviourate RPG, and Grandia is just... Wow. A grand adventure, full of fun. I really love that game.

Err, Western RPG's I love involve the Fallout series and KOTOR1. Especially KOTOR2 though, because of the constant lampshade-hanging on CRPG cliches xD

EDIT: Just read the post above me xD.
KOTOR is amazing to many of us it seems ;p

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Skies of Arcadia yet. The Legends version on the Gamecube is still my favourite game of all time. With a 3-way tie for 2nd place between KotOR, Jade Empire, and Mass Effect 2.

Baldur's Gate and BGII take the cake, the cream and the profiteroles.

This, hands down.
And I mean all hands down. If I could grow more arms through painful gene splicing and agonizing surgeries to become a multi-armed freak of nature who is shunned by his loved ones and doomed to wander the jungles of Borneo hiding from the local villagers who think I'm an evil spirit, JUST so that I could put my many hands down to say that Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 are the best RPGs ever made, then I would.
That many hands down.
BG forever.
If I had to pick a number 2, Baldur's Gate would be there.
I'm still hoping for a new game in the series.
Is there any way, ANY WAY to download Baldur's Gate 2 (by that I mean a legal transaction online, like Steam) to get it to work on Vista. I really, really want to play it, sounds like just my cuppa tea.

OT: I honestly don't know, I've had alot of fun with Lost Odyssey, DA:O, Fallout 3, Oblivion, Fallout, Morrowind and the Mass Effects. I just can't choose between such a list of great titles.

Using my nostalgia lenses I would vote for Xenogears or Final Fantasy VII because they are some of the first RPG's I really got into. Looking at what I've played recently I'd have to give it to either Oblivion or Fallout 3 because I have spent a ridiculous number of hours with each one.

For WRPG Oblivion because I really really really love those mods. KotOR does come as a very close second with Fallout 3 as third.

For JRPG I don't care what anyone thinks about it FFVII is my favourite FF game. While I will not say it is the best in the series as that it all up to your own opinion it is definitely one of the best in the series. Kingdom Hearts being second favourite and Secret of Mana third.

It doesn't matter if its a jrpg or a western or even some game with rpg like mechanics.

My favorite rpg (and one of my all time favorite games) is Dragon Quest VIII. Excellent story, great gameplay, awesome music, and one of the things I liked the most was the fact that there was no overworld just one HUGE map to explore, and explore, and explore.

So what's yours?
Fallout 3.......done.

^THE TRUTH.

I love that game so much. However, I also love a lot of Bioware games. They have very immersive stories and the conversation never gets old. If I was to choose a game from the Bioware stockpile, I'd either pick Dragon Age: Origins or KOTOR. Both are excellent.

Fallout 3. Because I play it as a ROLE PLAYING game. I love playing through the game with a lifestyle, backstory and skillset planned out for each new character I create. And I love how I can play all over again, through the exact same path and world, with a different character in my head. Even though I'm pressing the same buttons to do the same things, but each time feels like a new game.

It helped me see the appeal of Tabletop-RPGs, if I'm honest.

I could have sworn I posted in this topic already, but I guess not. Anyway, I really enjoyed Torchlight and Diablo II, those are probably my favourites. Tales of Vesperia is a great jRPG with a really fun and different battle system (at least compared to most jRPGs I've played). My favourite jRPG is probably Final Fantasy 9. Final Fantasy 12 had a really big open-world sorta deal, so I spent a lot of time playing that, and Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the really long name Rift is probably my favourite DS game because it's visually appealing and there are lots of different ways to put together a powerhouse team of rag-tag warriors. Fable (the first one) had a certain charm to it that the second one doesn't seem to have.

I guess I just really, really enjoy RPGs.
