Look up "Me First and the Gimme Gimmes"
They have 5 CDs that are nothing but covers. Awesome stuff too.
My favourite by them is Phantom of the Opera.
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes will change your life. I got to watch them in concert once. They legitimized cover bands in my eyes...or at least proved to me that they are a legitimate cover band.

You spin me round(like a record) by Dope(Original by... I have no idea)
The original is by Dead or Alive, if we're talking about the same song. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUatnbaNfEo]

Now me, I like the cover Pink Floyd did of School's Out, which was originally an Alice Cooper track if I recall.
Yeah, that's the one. Thanks!

A Perfect Circle's cover of "Imagine" originally by the late great Johnny Ace (aka John Lennon). Speaking of Lennon, The Beatles' cover of "Rock and Roll Music" by Chuck Berry is more enjoyable than the original.

Oh and Ben Folds' covers of "Freebird" and "Champagne Supernova" even though they're both like only a minute or so long.

Alien Ant Farm's version of 'Smooth Criminal' (originally composed by Michal Jackson) and Nirvana's versions of 'Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam','Seasons In The Sun', 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night?' and 'Lake of Fire'.

A good cover either has to be the one that the public most associate with the song, such as JC's Hurt, JH's All Along the Watchtower, MG's I Heard it Through the Grapevine or AF's Respect, or one which goes and really makes a song that band's own. By this I don't just mean like a metal band doing Pussycat Dolls or whatever, I mean like one that almost rewrites the song, and they really believe it. A good example is RATM doing Ghost of Tom Joad, though I don't really like that song. Another great cover of I Heard it Through the Grapevine is by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Also, Radiohead do a great Nobody Does it Better.

Peter Tagtgren's interpretation of Eleanor Rigby comes to mind, though I'm not sure that you all will like the industrial-metal sound. In any case, it's certainly a hell of a lot better than any other Beatles cover I've heard.

Metallica's 'Whiskey in the Jar', Snow Patrol's cover of Leona Lewis 'Run' (LOL), Chris Cornell's cover of 'Billie Jean'. the last is amazing, he has a fantastic voice. Word
Love this song (bolded).
And I think it was Leona Lewis that covered Snow Patrol's song.
For my own contribution: Evergreen Terrace's cover of Mad World.

All Along The Watchtower- Jimi Hendrix
This, as much as I like Dylan's original, it's Hendrix's that will always be with me.
Which is why I'm going to say "Mr. Tambourine Man" from the Byrds as a tie.

Technically speaking, I Love Rock And Roll from Joan Jett was a cover too. Oh yes, and Metallica's Ecstacy of Gold is an excellent cover; it helps to really like Ennio Morricone in the first place.

Sonata Articas cover of "Still Loving You", by Scorpion.

Every metal band with any kind of shame has to cover atleast one song from Scorpion :p

Time After Time by Quietdrive. I forget the original, but this cover actually stays true to it, while adding some nice guitar in there for good measure.
