Well that sucks, I'll probably still get it for PC unless they use freakin steam. Which I know they will.
It's a single player game. Steamworks is only ever incorporated to take care of the multiplayer. There's little reason for them to use it. Not that it would be an entirely terrible thing if they did...

OP: I sighed, but since it's not actually clear what changes they're making to accommodate consoles, there's no point in getting worked up over it yet, or maybe at all. If I just have to mod my UI or something, I really won't mind.
Steam has 100s of singleplayer games. Fallout new vegas uses steam and it's not multiplayer.

We need some ice for all this butthurt, stat! Seriously, what is so bad about the interface being more streamlined?

...

OT: And? This stuff about games being dumbed down for consoles is a load of crap, whatever people might say. Besides which, a company's primary motivator will always be profit, so this isn't really a surprise.

Why do people get so upset about this?

Yay for planning to buy it on the 360, then?

Yay indeed. As a console gamer, I am pleased.

Ha! I'm looking around this thread, and you know what? PC gamers make me laugh. I love how they seem to think that "console oriented" means "dumbed down" just because they have more buttons on their controllers and a different way to move the cross hair(which, by the way, is no more "intuitive" or "accurate" then a joystick. In my opinion). Seriously, guys: What exactly is it about your precious PC gaming that's so much more sophisticated then consoles?

Oh look, a bear. *POKE*

As I said before in this thread, "I suppose that means all console players are mentally handicapped and so need really easy to use, "sit down and play" mechanics? Don't generalize please, it just gets peoples rage up."

Not everyone rages about the "dumbing down", (though you do have to admit, things are made simpler for consoles which could be seen that, though its not always a bad thing... I hated Morrowind) more the fact that "console oriented" usually translates as "Well PC gamers can download mods etc to make the game run right for them, so we don't have to put all the effort into making it suitable for their platform really. (See my last comment on Page 9 for more about that.)

And I prefer a mouse personally, but it is up to opinion, and I do like Xbox controllers a fair bit.

They won't make Steam essential for singleplayer unless they want to do some sort of stat tracking. I guess if they feel the need to shoehorn in achievements, it'll be there, but otherwise I wouldn't worry.

I have faith they won't dumb it down, but will instead streamline it a little like the article said, maybe having taken cues from Bethesda's fallout 3 work.

As for the console thing, I play 360, but I hope PCs get a good port, partly because it'd be a real kick in the teeth for them if it wasn't, and partly because we'll be in PC gamer rage hell for the next ten years if it turns out bad.

You do know in the cases referred to dumbing down games most people talk about it in that it removes features which were previous or usually present. So there is dumbing down just not in the way you think it means.

I do get tired of pointing this out but yes a mouse is more accurate for FPS, and RTS purposes. As well as that a keyboard is useful in complex RPG and RTS games as you need more shortcuts/hotkeys. The latter shouldn't need explaining.

Now I will say this again I have no problem with you or anyone preferring a controller over kb+m that is a perfectly valid choice in that regard. When it comes down to technical specs a mouse is better for FPS games than a controller. At least until we can perfect motion controls. Now why is a mouse better? Well it is more accurate and has more control. I can have my mouse set at 800/1600/2400/3200 DPI(Dots per inch basically a sensitivity if you don't know what it means. I don't know if you do or not.). Also I have two different sensitivity settings. This means when I need a lower or higher sensitivity I can get it in the middle of a game or fire fight in less than a second. That is just not possible on consoles.

Then there is also the fact of continued need for aim assist on consoles while it is no longer on PC as mice don't need aim assist. As far as I remember as well people have brought up games where PC have played consoles players and completely destroyed them on these cross platform games. It was so bad they had to remove it or put heavy handicaps on PC players. Now I don't know the names of these games as I haven't played them but I have heard this brought up a couple of times. Since I don't know of any off hand you can feel free to ignore this point unless you want to find out names yourself.

Of course at this point you could just dismiss this as a pc developer ranting on consoles, but people buying pcs from him probably don't give a rats butt about his blog or views about consoles.

There was this one article I read a little while ago in which some developer tried connecting xbox players with PC players on some shooter. The PC users won by a huge margin.

I'm not saying the PC is a superior platform or anything, but it's definitely easier to aim with.

edit: damn, the post above me pretty much covers it -_-

Calm down people. TES was dumbed down five years ago. It ceased being hardcore and challenging nine years ago. The console comment is irritating, but I really don't see how they could dumb it down any further. They are really only removing the vestiges of true RPG mechanics that were already irrelevant with the last title. And it just may work better now.

For fucks sake.

OBLIVION WAS ALREADY A CONSOLE FOCUS GAME.

So you're going to take that, and make it somehow 'more' console focused?
Essentially saying something is becoming "console accessible" is an excuse to cut out features without being fan massacred by reviewers.

Duke Nukem was never exactly 'complex' to begin with.

Oblivion was made for consoles and its worst problems had nothing to do with its control scheme, and everything to do with the fact the leveling system and everything around it was brokentardedbad.

If dumbing down and designing for consoles makes for a stable engine and game mechanics that work, you're an idiot if you think that's bad.

If it's still fun, who gives a flying fuck? I mean, honestly, the game doesn't have to be a super-complex RPG with tons of stats and things like that to keep track of in order to be fun. Bethesda knows what they're doing, they know what gamers want, and if you think they're really gonna "dumb it down" too much, wait until you try the game yourself, and then make your call.
