Don't you see? The political parties have no choice. It's called lobbying.

If the parties don't try and stop file-sharing, then Hollywood will stop giving them what little money they pay in tax anyway.
It's my understanding "this is not a matter for the legislature"

This has not been debated in any Parliament, Senate or House in USA or any country. This has been a back room deal kept as secret as possible yet will have amazingly sweeping legal ramifications.

I'm not expert but it seems to be to try to apply ACTA in the US could be unconstitutional, I'd certainly like to see it fought in the courts.

Its an international treaty, we are all fucked.
It will be interesting to see how well this clears the senate in the US though.

lol, stopping the theft of people's hard-created works, an "invasion of human rights, privacy, and free speech"?

God, you people are stupid.
why do you say that when you must've commited some sort of piracy yourself?

face it, we're all gonna be arrested either way.
I never said I didn't. I'm just not so deluded that I've convinced myself that piracy isn't illegal, and stopping it is some kind of tin-foil-hatted man's idea of the loss of 'freedom of speech' or 'civil liberties.'

Of course, I live in Australia where we don't have silly little issues like this.

Yes, the same country where someone was convicted for childpornography because of simpsons porn, and the judge justified that the cartoon characters with yellow skin and only four fingers on each hand could still be seen as human beings and therefore should have the same rights as a real human being. That's not silly or anything, but I digress.

It is a total invasion of privacy and needs to be stopped. I live in the UK so this will likely affect me soon if it goes down in the USA. I am not one for the whole protest thing and have followed the law all my life, but I might have something to say about this...

However, it likely won't go through because everyone, including police and some politicians will likely protest.

If you have nothing to add to the argument, there's no reason to repeat what others have said. "Money for douchebags" summed up what you said rather clearly.
Yeah those inventors suck. I hate new things.

It isn't stopping piracy that most people oppose, it's the possible due process violations. Stopping piracy is a fine goal, but their are limits the methods people will accept in accomplishing the aforementioned goal, and many people feel the methods ACTA puts forth are over the line.

And just FYI, this is an international treaty, not US legislation. Australia is part of this too.

Yeah, this seems completely insane. Essentially, it seems that private companies are attempting to become their own private law-enforcement agencies, enforcing laws that they create.
1. Regardless of how much lobbying happens and how much money lobbyists throw at politicians, the government as a while simply won't want to hand this much power over to private organization.
2. The companies who supposedly want to enforce this thing will realize quickly just how many of their users will be in violation of their new rules. Even the biggest idiot would probably realize that if you send 90% of your customers to jail, you'll lost 90% of your profits, and the remaining 10% of the customers will not be able to make up for that sort of loss.
3. If this really is the end of the internet as we know it, something else will spring up in its place, some new technology that will provide similar services to what we lost, but will be outside the realm of the new restrictions.

Actually it isn't their idea. What people don't know is that the Republican party is extremely against something that violates someones rights, and gets into their privacy that's what a Conservative is a person who wants the government not to influence their life and have a control over it.

Yes, yes, because the Republicans are all about freedom of speech and the right to free internet... Considering these talks have been on going since 2008, when America had a Republican government, I think you're talking out your arse.

OT: This law is fucking scary. I seriously hope that it doesn't pass. I like my free internet.

Is there some way we can veto this lame agreement? and what countries will this effect?
'the western world' minus some of the poorer contries not affiliated to the EU.

and id like a veto too. unfortunately, to do this one needs a vote. a vote you can only get, if you have at least one milion voices behind you, well, for the EU that is.

.should be doable realy now i think about it XD the trouble is the internet is FLOODED with all kinds of voting sites etc. and no one takes it seriously. ;/
