My sister is just like that. She says that something animated, cartoon or not, cannot be engaging or immersive. She didn't even shed a tear at Up or Toy story 3 because 'it's not real'. She's so stubborn that she refuses to listen to my arguments against.
Wow, did you relies how perfect you avatar is for that comment? :p

And if she did not cry at all during either of those movies, she loses the right to say she has a soul.

I have. Whatever, they are entitled to their opinion. *watches "Batman: The Animated Series" and "Monster"*
Can I join you? The idiots that are so norrow minded that they can't see animation is just another way of film/tv story telling are hogging the other one with reruns of (insert show with more explosions in the title sequence then letters).

Ever met someone or a group with that mentality?

I honestly havent.
Certain ones are fine.
Grown men should not be watching Pokemon or Dragon ball Z.

hmm...idk if that statement is completely accurate, just like sexuality...i tend to think that what a person likes (both man and woman) tends to differ from person to person...what is healthy for one person indeed might be percieved as un-healthy for another person...but that does not nessariliy make it right or wrong does it?

Me too. We need to man up about it, and then go watch some sponge bob.

Or any other sweet cartoons. I'm just now getting into Cowboy Bebop.

I think it depends on the cartoon.
If a full grown man told me he enjoyed Dora the Explorer, I'd find it very odd.
But if another man said he liked Samurai Jack, I'd say: You wanna see my Samurai Jack DVD collection?
This with one addition; some cartoons are just for no one.

I'm looking at you; "Misadventures of Flapjack".

It is just painful to watch, at least for me; no redeeming qualities.

Yep, though you'll see it changing.

It's a generational thing, The Baby Boomers are still more or less in control (which is a big part of why the world is such a mess), and their attitudes represent the mainstream. To most people of my parent's generation "adult" cartoons are aberrations like "Felix The Cat", and they prefer to pretend things like Anime don't exist for the most part, or are created by freaks who are performing the equivilent of running around in a clown mask and raincoat exposing themselves to young children.

Truthfully I think one of the big problems is that there are very few attempts to do any kind of serious/mature storytelling with western animation. It happens, but rarely, and I think Anime and such is too stylized for a lot of the mainstream.

Most attempts to do "adult" animation in the US/west tend to lead to things that are being low brow, offensive, and absurd for their own sake. I look at things like "The Haunted World Of El Superbeasto" as a recent example, very entertaining, but it's entertaining in a borderline offensive, low-brow kind of way that isn't exactly going to convince the mainstream of the genere's potential.

I expect when we see the Boomers finally retire, and a few more Gen-Xers in power on our last gasp we'll see some changes, however we probably won't see a full change in attitude until Gen-Y fully comes into their own, having been raised more open to the possibilities inherant in the medium of animation.

I myself have been enjoying a great helping of multiple Gundams, Hetalia, Tenchi Muyo!, Valkyria Chronicles, and Samurai Jack.

not lately. I tend to stay away from those people.
or show them "Bible Black" then I wait to see if they feel the same afterward.
Oh dear lord I remember that Hentai!
I was like "Oh, what's this"
Words can not describe the level of "wtf" that was going through my mind.
I think showing them a Hentai will work, but not the way you'd want. Something tells me it would just end up with them thinking your a pervert.

My parents, hell, my entire family(the adults) think cartoons are just for kids. To be honest, I don't have the patience to prove them wrong. I could show them any of the anime I have on my external hard drive, like Cowboy Bebop, Monster, Trigun, Darker than Black, Kurozuka, and such, but when almost everyone in my family only speaks Spanish and the shows are subtitled in English, that tends to complicate things.

Yay animated stuff!

One that always gets me (and is getting me more recently with Toy Story 3 coming out) is 'Disney is just for kids'. Just because it's animated doesn't mean it's for kids!

Anyone who thinks any of the shows on Adult Swim are for kids are out of their damn minds.

But no, no one has made any comments to me about watching cartoons, and they shouldn't either. I don't make comments to my friends about them watching reality shows or whatever other bullshit is on network television these days.

I can't understand why people think this way. Early cartoons were shown in theaters to adults just like any other films. In more modern times we have anime like Higurashi, Baccano!, and Hellsing, and western shows like The Simpsons, Venture Bros, and Ren and Stimpy.

Animation is by nature no more or less mature than live action. There is no reason for the entire medium to be considered childish just because of the likes of Pokemon or Spongebob.

Yes. Like, every day. All the time.

As for my opinions on cartoons in general (NOT anime or any other form of animation), the whole "It's for kids" thing depends on the show. As some people on this thread have said, The Simpsons and Family Guy aren't exactly "For Kids".
