Does anyone else miss the days when everyone thought these two were brothers?
As for the actual petition, no no no no no no no. I'm all for gay marriage and all that happy shit, but REALLY?
Guys, you have much bigger problems to deal with then trying to get two pieces of fucking felt to get married.

I mean,Bert and Ernie being gay has been a joke for years and just now it's being taken as srs business,is this because of the gay marriage raffle that was in New York a while ago?

if they do this, they have to out snuffalufagus as a drug-induced hallucination, with Big Bird doing piles and piles of coke to cope with being different, eventually alienating all his friends, having to perform sexual acts to afford his next hit, Quickly spiraling into suicidal dimentia as a ragged, angry Snuffy feeds his thoughts of a violent, messy death as the only escape.

These are things Preschoolers need to know. They can do it tastefully.

Well, I just don't think it is necessary for the target audience of 4-6ish to need to learn about gay marriage, especially as someone already pointed out they'll learn their influences and views more from how their parents react to watching and discussing the issue that what Big Bird says. And to do it in such a stupid way is pretty rediculous. Leave the puppets be.

Like in Rambo First Blood? Well we all know how that ended. SEE! SEE! The acceptance of gay people has led to the murder of ALL of Sesame Street. You blind fools! Oscar was clearly a Post-Tramatic stress veteran of 'Nam. He lived in your bins and you laughed at him, but with your sodomy has come the raining bullets of judgement!

The joke is funny, but a live petition? Thiss shit needs to stop. Gay marriage is not a preschooler issue, just as Congress and alcoholism have no place in a preschooler's curriculum. Wait til they hit puberty, THEN give them the low-down on sexuality. Also, please don't taint the memory I have of Sesame Street as a kid.

Ah, I see the hyper politically correct brigade aren't done raping Sesame Street yet. Neutering Cookie Monster so he has to subsist on health food is tragic. Removing Snuffleufugus because imaginary friends are apparently dangerous to social adjustment is fucking stupid. But for god's sake, most of the jokes about Bert and Ernie are just that - jokes. If you go to a big city like NYC you'll find it's entirely common for straight males to share the same room. I did so myself when I was living in Ho Chi Minh City.

Of course, we could all being trolled here. I'm going to just go with that.

Why would you bring sexuality into Sesame Street? There's just no reason for it! They're puppets.

(1) this would be the first puppet marriage on the show, Kermit and miss piggy aren't even married (wait, are we including Muppets take Manhattan? Fuck it)

(2) they haven't shown any of the affection for each other (visa vis Kermit + Miss Piggy) they just live together, sleep in SEPARATE beds and quite frankly seem to hate each other

(3) this is going to give a skewed impression as kids are going to assume any two males having proximity to each other are in sexual relations, I think it is important to both gay and straight individuals to understand there is more to homosexuality than "living together and arguing"

Basically, Bert and Ernie can't just "get married" as they haven't gone through what Kermit and Piggy haven't has decades of back and forth affection and increasing intimate interest.

I think it would be far more effective to just have same-sex married HUMANS on the show, just get some lesbian celebrities or something to walk on and sing about how freaking amazing the letter J is... J is for Jaguar.

That's all you have to do. Mrs and Mrs Jefferson, they're married... moving on, now tell me more of this extraordinary letter known as "J", I do believe there are other things that begin with extraordinary new letter.

Look, homosexuality is only about 6% of the population, should they really represent 50% of the married couples on the show?

I think representation would be far better just by inviting relevant gay couples on the show and casually introducing the fact that they are married.

It's a kid's show. They don't need to have any sort of sexuality. Like any.

This is a bit ridiculous. I mean... imagine this demand being put on any other male characters who have lived together.
Imagine their creators being petitioned to pair off these two just because some part of the audience (not even the target audience) says so.
It's their show with their characters, they call the shots.

Teaching tolerance to kids is a good thing, I just think the kids who watch sesame street are a bit too young to grasp the concept of marriage or love at all.
It would just confuse them. Imagine if some kid wanted to marry his best buddy(misunderstanding the concept of marriage), the media would say "Sesame Street turns kids gay" and parents would go crazy.

humanity never proving me wrong in how dumb we can all be. i love Gay folks, i really do but sweet hell what the fuck?!? yes we all have made the joke about them being gay but its a fucking cartoon you fucking shitheads we don't need them having that shoved down their throats. its a kids show, they are supposed to learn colors and shapes and letters not about which hole bert and ernie like to plow. its a kids show and i know i hate this word but this really comes off as an agenda. i think the creator of Ren and Stimpy put it best when asked if the two leads were gay. he simplied replied hey thats none of my business. honestly its not mine either.

TL;DR
shut up they aren't gay, they are puppets meant to entertain preschoolers not a place to stick the rainbow flag.

sincerly,

Well I guess that's one way to see it. I always thought that they had some kind of Joey/Chandler relationship.

And yes, I used to watch Friends.

I always thought they were bothers or just friends, i mean none of the other puppets have any kind of sexual orientatation, if they want it in the program have it be one of the humans not a puppet

I'm all for having gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, etc. people in kids shows to show them there's nothing wrong with people like that, but I don't believe people should make characters gay or throw some token character in. That doesn't send the right message. And Bert and Ernie have never shown themselves to be gay (at least not from what I remember). I know that everyone's probably thought about it, what with them living in the same house together and sleeping in the same bedroom (possibly same bed), but there was nothing to ever indicate that they were anything beyond friends. Hell I even think they might be brothers.

So sure, if Sesame Street can work in an LGBT character in a good manner, then I'm all for it. But I'm not up for them shoving one in just for effort.

/facepalm

Let me see if I can explain this.

Back in 1965, there was a stage play called "The Odd Couple", which featured one neat/neurotic room-mate and one slovenly/sloppy room-mate. The entire idea was that the neat one brought order to the other's life, while the slovely one brought fun to the neat one's life.

But they WEREN'T GAY.

Neither is Starsky and Hutch (though David Soul is), Xena and Gabrielle, Fonz and Richie, Laverne and Shirley, Barney and Fred, Ren and Stimpy or Batman and Robin.

They just aren't.

It doesn't matter how much slash shipping and decreements you make about how it would be "better". They aren't. And making them that way would not only hurt the characters, but show that a character's sexuality is dependent on the prevailing thoughts of the time.

This. Is. Wrong.

No matter how you roll that particular dice. Equally, Will and Grace will not get it off, because he's gay and she's a woman.

Like many other shows, we also have to bring in the very basic idea that THEY ARE PUPPETS.

They do not have a sexuality because they don't have sex. They just don't. Get over it.

They don't even have a viable gender. It's like the cretinous idea of making the Cookie Monster eat healthy food.
HE'S A MONSTER THAT EATS COOKIES. IF YOU REMOVE COOKIES FROM HIS DIET, HE DIES.

Do you want to kill the Cookie Monster? Do you? Do you really want that on you conscience?

Bert and Ernie are muppets. They are not male. They do not have sex. Therefore they are not and cannot be gay. Let alone married.

Leave them alone. Ernie's never going to leave Duckie anyway.

I always thought they were brothers.

But meh, Id nt see why they would need to be married, regardless.
