I'm tempted to drop a line about Duke Nukem or Sonic but clearly others have beaten me.
Besides, I've said enough about Duke now and I'm bored with him.

So instead I'll mention Ayumi from X-blades... my god. First of all, she's essentially naked, running into battle in a g-string and bikini that even Ivy Valentine would think was immodest. But worse still is her personality, she's like a hideous mix of all the worst female stereotypes all meshed together into one obnoxious screeching and unlovable character.
She's snotty, she's stupid, she's selfish and she's annoying.

This, combined with the games immature habit of showing off her ass kind of makes her a massive middle finger to everything feminism has managed to achieve in the last four decades.

I don't even know what that character was supposed to be. Seriously. She made me want to punch kittens.
*blinks* (again) Okay you guys are just baiting me now right? I mean, you saw the stuff about Hope and thought "hee hee man I'mma have FUN with this one!" right?

She (from my perspective) was supposed to be the "villian" that you come to realize is really not so different from yourself. The metaphoric equivalent of the adage "There but for the grace of god go I." I think she (and Fang) are meant to make us wonder about those we are taught or conditioned to believe are our enemies and what they are really like as people.

So with that, G'night George!

CONSPIRACY THEORY! EVERYONE ON TV IS MANIPULATING FACTS!!!!!!
The sad thing is it's pretty much true. Yeah, I was hating pretty specifically on Fox News there, but pretty much every television news station in this country has a slant. The problem is that in this particular case, Fox News has a pretty well-documented and provable history of misrepresenting the facts, fabricating things, using inflammatory headlines (SE-Xbox, anyone?), bringing in spokespeople who are completely unqualified to talk on the subject and presenting them as experts... I mean, really... none of this should be coming as a surprise to anyone here. Fox News just isn't very fair or balanced when it comes to the portrayal of video games and those who enjoy them. I'm angry, sure, because I'm a gamer. But more than that I'm sad that things have gotten this bad in this country. Other news outlets aren't particularly good at reporting on games either, but at least they aren't on quite as much of an offensive against us as Fox is.

Kingpopadopalus said:
Not all of fox news is bad, some of their shows offer a different opinion from mainstream media and a lot of people think that difference in opinion from the majority is bad but yet people somehow accept a differing opinion if its against fox news. Peoples hypocrisy is just astounding.
I'm not saying that all of Fox News is bad. Do they have their problems? Of course they do. But as I mentioned previously, so does pretty much every other news provider in this country. That's why I at the very least try to get my facts from an assortment of stations. Y'know, hear the same story from multiple angles and try to piece together as much of the actual truth as I can.

Although, that said, I really, really dislike O'Reilly and Glenn Beck. But it's the same deal with those two as it is with Duke. Duke doesn't represent game characters as a whole, and those two clowns don't represent Fox as a whole. O'Reilly, Beck, and Nukem are all just very loud egomaniacs.

She sickens me to my very core. I hate everything about her: her aesthetic design, her voice actor, her moves, her personality, everything.
She HAS to be a joke character, right? Nobody in their right mind would make such a foul beast. I would also complain about how she only has Ryu's movelist copied, but then I would have to complain about 80% of the fighters-
Uh, yeah, she is a joke character. The idea of an untrained schoolgirl who is on par with these ridiculously muscled guys who are ostensibly the most powerful people in the world is totally ludicrous and definitely a parody. The superpowered schoolgirl is kind of a running cultural archetype over there, and she's a parody of what that archetype would be like in the otherwise serious world of street fighter.
Aha! Your words ring true. I was finding it hard to tell if she's supposed to be a joke, as usually I can identify joke characters, which Street Fighter certainly has a lot of.
Even so, I have given her the honor of the Official Fighting Game Punching Bag Character Award! An award I only give to fighting game characters who I will relentlessly beat the crap out of when I'm bored. She still pisses me off, even if she is a joke character.
NOTE: The only other character who has ever recieved this award is Jade from Mortal Kombat.

Any show on a news channel that contains a single host and is centered around it like this is bound to make the host become pompous.

Rico from Killzone. He is one of the most annoying bitches ever.
OMG this....so this.

Also Kratos. At first I somewhat understood his motives; thirst for revenge and all that, but there were too many times I thought to myself "All your problems could be solved if you just STOPPED MURDERING PEOPLE!!!"

Kratos aka Duchey McDuche from planet Duche. (in GoW 2 and 3) Hes got the worst motive of any "protagonist" ever. He basically BECOMES the badguy from GoW 1 in 2.

My problem isn't so much that they're pompous. I mean, hell, I like Duke. My problem is that they're opinion-oriented shows, frequently presented as fact-based. To Glenn Beck's credit he does frequently mention that the things he says are theory and that his viewers should do some research of their own... but how many people actually do, and how many people are too lazy and decide to just believe everything he says as fact? In that regard, I guess you could say that I'm more upset with the viewership than the host. /shrug.

As for other video game characters that piss me off, though... I really couldn't stand Ohgren in Dragon Age: Origins. Like... at all. Hated his character, hated his story arc, hated his interactions with the rest of the characters, didn't even find him particularly useful in combat. Poor Steve Blum. Not that Steve Blum is lacking in characters to voice act for. Pretty sure he's been in something like 90% of all games since the introduction of voice talent.

Most hated? Otis from Deadrising. *in the middle of a boss fight* *RING RING! RING RING!* NO!
Oh fucking ay Yes! I hated him so much(that he qualifies as a disgrace) especially how he'd call(seemingly always at the worst moment) and want to chat or something and then when you have to hang up to avoid getting nommed or shot at he fucking calls you back just to berate you for being rude.
Also I also elect to put forth for consideration Link from Legend of Zelda, The Courier of Fallout New Vegas fame, and finally/most importantly: That God damned dog from Duck Hunt!

I'm actually rather curious about that. The Courier was more or less a blank slate, to be filled in by the player. How exactly is the Courier disgraceful, if it's up to players like you and I to craft the Courier's persona, behavior, and actions? Doesn't that mean, by extension, that we are a disgrace to gaming? Deep, man.

/repressed childhood memories.
/anger level rising.

The light gun kills the ducks, but no matter how many times I shoot, the dog just keeps laughing... it just keeps laughing... laughing...

After reading most of your responses, it seems that a lot of you are just picking annoying characters, but not necissarily characters that are a disgrace to gaming. For example, Tingle, or the whiny guy from KOTOR. They're SUPPOSED to be annoying; it fits their personalities and helps shape the game.

I think the character that is the biggest disgrace to gaming is Roman from GTA IV.

His ACTUAL character is okay, but the fact that he constantly calls you ALL THE TIME in game and asks you to go do things is fucking annoying... which would be okay if you didn't lose "points" for not actually going and doing the stuff with him. He is only good in the cutscenes. He would be a great character in a movie, but in a game, he is out of place; this ties into a bigger theme of grungy realism, making games into movies, and having the same annoyances in your escapism as in real life. When you're gaming you should not feel annoyed that you have to carry out the same chores that you do IRL, and that is exactly how the Roman makes me feel (along with some of the other characters that do this, but he is the most obvious one).

Chell and Gordon Freeman.

Come on guys, neither of them have a single line of dialog. Gordon I suppose has his "locker" in half life one but that's much less backstory than even master chief, and he's horrifically blank as well. I don't get why people worship these characters.

People love Gordon Freeman because he's a quiet nerd who cleans off his glasses, grabs his trusty crowbar, and rises to the occasion. All the quiet nerds who play video games love to pretend it's them peering through blood-smeared Coke bottle lenses and sweating their balls off in a giant tin can, saving the world and more importantly, implied love interest? NERDGASM!

As for Master Chief... I could be wrong... but...

They could have done that with a less teeth grindingly irritating character.

Jar Jar Binks.
Wait, disgrace to gaming?
Still Jar Jar Binks.
I'm sure he's been in at least one game that he wasn't needed in.
