I think South Park has a quote for this. It was intended to mock Scientology, but still:

"Is it any more retarded than Jesus coming back to life after three days, or Buddha meditating for twenty years under a tree?"
"Yes. It's WAY more retarded than that."

Isn't that quite an old story? I swear I heard it a while ago.

Yeah, after reading it says it's from May 2007.

It's a valid argument, though. Pastafarianism is equally as likely as Christianity, or Judaism, or Islam, or any religion. If you like it, I suggest you read up on Russell's Teapot [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell%27s_teapot] concept.

I like this.

Oh FFS. This is as bad as the dickhead who was banned from tesco because he said removing his hood in a public place was against his religion (jedi). all religion should be banned from schools and that includes praciseing it as well. the boy was ment to be there to learn not to tit about as a bloody pirate.

I love this Child. I wish he was my son, and then I'd give him everything he wanted because he has Iron Testicles.
Dear god yes. If he was my kid, I'd have him dress like a pirate the day he came back, and start clawing at people with his hook hand.

By this logic, if I supported the nazi party I should not get suspended for wearing the arm thing with the symbol to school.
No because Nazism isn't a religion and it's offensive
It's a political belief.
Still offensive
Fine but I find women having to dress in those full body things because of the muslim religion offensive so they shouldn't be allowed to do it......by your logic.
Why not
Because I find it offensive.
No I meant why not ban them

Seriously? This was posted on, like, 2007.
OK, OK, I'll say what I said back then.

*Ahem*
ALL RELIGOS PEOPLE SJOUD BE SHOT FIOR BEING RETARDEDE

Luckily, that was about 3 years ago, and I like to think that I've matured a bit since then.

So yeah, dudes got a right to religion, but how far does that go? Does it mean that he has the right to pose an immediate threat to those around him? I don't think so.

In this case he was distracting the whole class, so while there's a big difference, I still think that he didn't have a right to be ware'n no pirate costume.

But all this doesn't really matter because it's a joke, I was really thinking more in terms of what would I say if this happened with a Muslim girl, e.g. all the children in her class had never seen a head scarf or something like that.

I say good on the school. The kid is just being a smart-ass. Pastafarianism and the Flying Spaghetti Monster are themselves jokes about religion, showing how ridiculous it is. If you can't understand how it's a parody and then claim that it grants you freedom of religion, then you're just as much of an idiot as the people you're trying to insult with it. You can't say your fake religion that you adopted to make fun of other religions, knowing full well it's not a religion grants you the freedom to do whatever the hell you want. And I can see how this would be disruptive to the learning environment, some jackass coming in dressed like a pirate is going to cause a bit of a commotion and distract people from the already poor education provided by public schools. There's a time to make statements about society and religion, school isn't the place to dress like a pirate because you worship spaghetti.

Come now, nobody here honestly thinks this kid believes in the FSM.
He just did this to fuck with people.
I'm all for free expression but there are limits.
What, if I decide my religion says I must run around naked, only covered in green paint except for an Indiana Jones-hat, that would suddenly make it right?
Wearing a pirate outfit is bullshit and he's just trying to annoy people.
A real atheist, a person of conviction, wouldn't act that childish.
I get the point of the FSM but all it is, is a little thought experiment that's meant to get religious folks to rethink their position.
first ammendment says yes, it would be right
he's not offending anyone
if he was suspended for shouting out in a pirate accent in class, that would be different

but to stop him wearing the outfit is ridiculous

fucking double standards

Why not
Well, if I were to make up a religion where the Nazi party is a group of divine angels, and that I should where full Nazi attire where ever I go, I shouldn't be allowed to because it's offensive to many people. After all, Hitler killed thousands of innocent people right? You could go as far as to say that pirates robbed and killed thousands of innocent people too, what if I'm offended by that? Besides, deep down you know the kid doesn't really believe in this religion, you know he just wanted attention and to dress up as a pirate.

Pastafarianism is a parody religion, its not meant to be taken seriously, hence the ridiculous beliefs. Which aren't really anymore ridiculous that a man that appeared out of nowhere could do the same thing. Regardless, I think that they shouldn't just suspend him because of his beliefs, parodical* as they may be.

*I don't know if this is a real word.

I was just going to go with the South Park quote and be on my merry way, but since everyone seems to have missed the point here...

He is not being subjugated for his "religion". He is being suspended for repeatedly making a statement about religion that was disruptive to the classroom environment. It's the same with that retarded "Jedi" thing and all those Scientologists running around.

We get it. You don't believe what some people do. Gotcha. What you're doing isn't clever, it's just unprovoked mockery. And in this case the school did exactly the right thing.
