Then again, I suppose if he'd been turned back for wearing a turban I wouldn't be talking like this... I acknowledge this hypocrisy and apologise for it. If he claims it is his religion we must respect it. All are equal under the law and all that.
Well since its based on a religion designed to mock all others and not be taken seriously I dont see how he can claim its legit.
And he obviously wanted to create all this controversy or he wouldn't have done it in the first place, or just for the LuLz

But still... AWESOME!

Personally, it would be fine if this kid was genuinely religious - but he isn't. Anyone who claims to worship the "flying spahgetti monster" is just doing so out of a sense of irony; he's trying to be a smartass and make a point about how all religions are just as stupid as this. There is absoloutely no parallel between this and a Muslim wearing their traditional garments.

Should he have been suspended? No, but defending him on the basis that it's "his religion" is bullshit, because any logical person can see that he is an atheist. Since this is so obvious, one could say that the school WAS justified in suspending him, as the "point" he was making is something that would probably have offended many of the truly religious students at that particular school. What this argument SHOULD be about is whether or not he has the right to make such a statement - since this is the United States and people have the right to free speech (which includes everything from saying you support abortion to saying you love the Nazis; it's all perfectly legal in the good ol' USA!), then yes, he does have the right to make such a statement.

First Jedis, now Pirates, what next - Ninjas? This is just disturbing. These fake religions are nothing more than attractives for the off-throws of society. That might sound hypocritical of me since I am atheist, but its true! Sikhs and Muslims havent fought for their rights only to be made a fool of by these scumbags!

You want to be a pirate kid? You got to walk the plank! Go boy, say hi to flipper!

Remember, we have proof. We have an image of FSM creating a mountain and a midget.

So think twice before renouncing it as "an ironic religion"

This Child [http://www.newsique.com/us/student_punished_for_spaghetti_b//] was suspended from school for coming in in full pirate attire even though it's a key part of his religion.

I think that I may just convert to Pastafarian just for this.

What do you think and why?
had it coming, if he used some common sense he woudlnt be suspended.

how about i go to school naked and claim its part of my religion?

edit: i made this comment not knowing anything about this "religion" now that i read the article i think he should be expelled from the school for claiming his religious rights are being infringed when in reality he does not belong to a religion.

no, pastafarian is not a religion.

or if it is its about as much of a religion as simpsonism (the religion where you follow Homer Simpson's trail and worship him as a supreme god).

Someone should go to his school wearing a full burka (or whatever those personal prison outfits Muslim women are forced to wear are called) and see what happens. If they can get away with it, they should come the next day in the same outfit with a fake gun hidden inside it, and then show it to the principal at the end of the day.

Then bitchslap said principal for being too cowardly to take on an even crazier religion than Pastafarianism.

What religious rights to children have in schools? In my opinion? None whatsoever. Same for every religion. School is for learning.

I thought it could be a viable religion until I read that they worship the "Flying Spahghetti Monster". You can't just make up your own religion and expect people to heed to your beliefs without question.

If I said I worship "Pizza Man" and he commands me to come to school nude, do you think people would have a problem? Using this logic, no, no they wouldn't, because it's my beliefs.

But that kid is awesome. I have to admit that.
The point of Pastafarianism is to make people question the validity of other religions. Know pastafarians actually believe that there is actually a flying spaghetti monster in the sky. But they can't suspend the kid for fashion choices. The pirate costume most likely doesn't violate the dress code unless he brought a fake sword with him.

Woo, how edgy, how cool.

Yeah, sorry I just extremely dislike Pastafarianism and all this bullshit, especially when people obviously take what was meant as a silly little joke too far.

School did a good thing.

Yeah, I see what you mean. After I've read this I went to wikipedia and read about Pastafarians, scratched my head, pointed my hands towards the screen and said "What the fuck?".

Exactly. Pastafarianism is a secular belief disguised as a religious belief to shield itself from criticism by hiding behind freedom of religion.

The whole point of Pastafarianism was to point out how institutionalized religion is bad, and once intelligent design was stopped, the only reason it stuck around was because people enjoyed making fun of other religions.

The pirate regalia crap is ridiculous, because other religions have religious garb that doesn't irritate everyone around them. The only other piece of religious clothing that I've seen that stands out is a burka, and even then, it's not disruptive, unless you're constantly shouting "HEY! I'VE GOT A BURKA ON!" The kid is wearing pirate regalia SPECIFICALLY to attract attention, so he can't say that it isn't disruptive. The school was in the right here.

(This is my last post in Off-Topic, so I might as well make it a good one.)

Exactly.
The title of this thread is misleading. It's not about actual belief.

Again he's a kid and if he was taught this he might have accepted this as actual fact
