Jesus Christ, it's cOLD in here.
Besides, you have to draw the line somewhere. Pastafarianism is an obvious parody religion. You can't equate it to a child being kicked out for, say, wearing a kippah.

It's just as proper as any other of the world's main religions

You know, if I went to school in a priest's habit, I'D probably get suspended and you all would be on the side of the school. What, pirates make it okay?

But I think that people should be able to wear whatever they want as long as it's not profane or disgusting.
*snaps fingers* You got it right. Sadly the escapist is even more anti-theist than last year. We (religious people, your post makes me believe that you are religious) can only hope that the moderators will do something about this.
(Ok, admittedly they have done something because I noticed a decline in anti-theist flamer population last month.)

Again he's a kid and if he was taught this he might have accepted this as actual fact
From the article, I have no reason to assume that. If, however, he truly believes it, his position would indeed be more acceptable.
A stereotypical pirate-attire is still disruptive and unadvisable, but maybe those people could then find a middle ground (i.e. wear head-scarfs but not eyepatches, wear striped shirts and leather boots but no plastic hook-hands and so on).
Without any evidence to the contrary, however, I presume that this kid just wanted to grab attention and thought he was a cool rebel.

On another note, it's these kind of atheists that make the rest of us look bad.
Durr-hur, cuz real religion is just as stupid.
Pastafarianism was funny as a parody of Intelligent Design, it wasn't supposed to mock religion in general, and this is taking it too damn far.

Aye, FSM isn't a "parody religion" but rather a "parody of religion". He took someone's idea and pushed it "edgy", to promote his ego and/or his FSM atheistic beliefs. Neither is appropriate in class.

Pull the weeds when they are few and small. We know religion to be the stuff of flamewars. Imagine trying to recover a schoolful of children from a chronic, real-life enactment -- Yeah, OK, the punchline? The kid's a troll.

Tangentially, I get the feeling that some parents believe they have exclusive or veto rights to the branding of their child's brain, at least until the age of 18. Does/should that right exist? (And suddenly I am reminded of Obama's recent snag...)

I thought it was to counter the idea of creationism being taught and they said that they'll do it

It was done in protest of Intelligent Design.

Substitute 'Pastafarian' with 'Muslim' and 'Eye Patch' with 'Head Scarf', and then imagine the uproar. Or 'Christian' and 'Crucafix' if you like.

That's the point the kid was trying to make. Bit silly getting yourself in the shit for it but ballsy all the same.

First Jedis, now Pirates, what next - Ninjas? This is just disturbing. These fake religions are nothing more than attractives for the off-throws of society. That might sound hypocritical of me since I am atheist, but its true! Sikhs and Muslims havent fought for their rights only to be made a fool of by these scumbags!

You want to be a pirate kid? You got to walk the plank! Go boy, say hi to flipper!
All religions have faced persecution. Pastafarianism is not mocking Muslims in a vacuum, they're a tongue-in-cheek critique of all religion. Whether or not this kid understands the subtlety behind this "religion" is up for debate. I admit the dressing as a pirate is notably unsubtle but still...

No, I agree with you on this. If he's for real, he should've gotten some sort of counseling as to how to undisruptively express his religious beliefs (what I meant with "middle-ground") instead.
But I cannot imagine him being serious about FSM.

Except you can't, because those are real religions.

He didn't make any point, besides making himself out to be a jackass. We get it, you think religion is silly. No need to go overboard.
