I'm getting a bit tired of all this ranting on mainstream games. Okay, so Gears of War isn't exactly deep. It's not supposed to be! The game's iconic weapon is a gun with a chainsaw on the end. Everyone treats it like it's supposed to be as deep as the Marianas Trench, not a pretty wadding pool filled the with the blood and viscera of your enemies. Like it's ruining gaming. The type of people who game for Gears are not the kind of people who appreciate things like Mirrors Edge. I played about the first half of Mirror's Edge when my friend came over the other day. It's a pretty fun game. However the gun play is, understandably, lacking. I'm cool with that. Making a platforming game in the first person is cool and interesting and makes me want to play it, whereas I normally hate playing platformers. However, the slight problem is that far too often there are enemies. Who frequently stand in your way. Several of them. And while the AI is not too accurate, when it is accurate, it is very accurate, aiming just right so that as the bullet enters Faith, it ricochets through her body into her brain.

Also, so what if Cliffy B is an asshole? If you think he's an asshole, tell him to go fuck himself and stop reading things he says that makes you angry.
Agreed.

I play games for fun. FUN. You know something? That is the entire point. If you want to berate gamers for playing games which aren't deep go berate some roller-coaster goers or some people playing with a frisbee on a beach. This is why gamers have such a repuation as nerds - the inherent snobbishness that seems to infect it like a disease. But I have noticed it is generally only the more vocal crowd who think this way, the majority are nothing like this as can be clearly seen from game sales.

Newsflash - Gears was massively more successful than The Witcher.

Having said that... who gives a crap what Cliffy B says or thinks? Ohhh... lots of people here do because they are all ranting and raving about it. Don't you guys get it? If people just ignored the attention seeking idiot he would go away. But every thing he says is quoted in the gaming media and hundreds of threads across the internet will spring up.

"Cliffy B Likes Yoghurt!"

"Cliffy B says there aren't enough shark games!"

"Cliffy B supports Obama!"

Just STOP. Seriously just STOP. Next time you see a gaming media website that has Cliffy B in the headline just DON'T READ IT, and click back on the browser, and DON'T go making threads on him.

Lets all do this [http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=b8dBDJKX-v8].

You know I didn't buy Mirrors Edge for one reason, I am flat FUCKING broke. I seriously have no money left, I love the look of the game, I love the feel, I don't like playing a girl (Less a Sexist thing more of a 'I see myself as the main character so I wonder where the penis went' issue) but that's never a selling point.

The point i'm trying to make is, I would buy Mirrors Edge, but I would not buy gears, my brother with his 360 and frat-boy attitude would not buy gears, me with ADHD (Which I do have) would not buy gears.

And any SHIT A developer spews out about another game, is shit, because he is entitled to his own opinion that's right, however he should make a fucking blog is he want's to share it with the world, and next time he has to comment on the game he can say "Sorry but can we talk about stuff I'm making?"
I'm sure if you raid the 'Swear Jar' at home, you'll find enough coins to buy Mirror's Edge & probably another game too.

Actually I think I can, reasons being:

A) Gears of War is not innovative (unless the innovation is "More brown than any game before it")
B) Mirror's Edge is (and all the more surprising given it comes from EA of all places)
C) He's a hypocrite. I'm sure everyone who ordered Jazz Jackrabbit did so without playing the shareware version first, no wait that's only in a world where he's right. Way to essentially mock the demo/shareware system that allowed you to become famous in the first place, Cliff.

Well given how it hardly gets the bile thrown its way that Halo 3 does I was under the erroneous impression it had something different going for it other than "You've seen all of this before and done a lot better, yes, even the improbable chainsaw bayonet."

Clearly this was not the case, and thus I will never (ever) cease my endless mockery of Gears of War. I mean, it wouldn't be fair if all everyone did was make fun of the shooter that looks positively sophisticated next to it, we gotta get some equal time on the dislike of mediocrity.

So maybe when Harold Ryan says he doesn't "get" some game that's far more innovative than Halo 3 I'll join in on the communal bashing of that. Until then...i see no reason to change.

Based on the title, isn't it a good thing in most people's mind if gaming can be compared to sex at all?

Games are not about innovation. They are about fun. That is the ultimate goal. If you want innovation and stuff that's fine, but to rip a game for lack of innovation when it is not even trying only makes you look like the fool and something of a snob. It's like ripping into a Terminator film because it didn't quote enough Shakespeare.

Yeah that would be something if I hated the Terminator films (and I like them). But here's the thing. People I know were praising Gears as "something different" in FPS games (as in innovative) so you can now understand where I'm coming from. And I firmly believe games need to be about innovation because if they're not then the industry is not going to move forward and instead spin its wheels, and we'll never win the neverending debate of "are games art?"

Oh, and Gears of War isn't fun either from my perspective. I don't begrudge people for enjoying the low-end of big dumb action games (after all I enjoyed Saints Row 2 and that's not particularly thought-provoking) but if people are honestly going to tell me it's legitimately bringing something new to the table then I am not going to be judging the game on any other merit than the lies people tried to feed me. It's called hype, and not living up to it.

And speaking of hype, they keep trying to present both games as some sort of deep emotional experience via the ad campaigns. Which again, is another big falsehood. Just show the game for what it is, don't try to pull the wool over the eyes of those who know better. Don't try to tell me Gears of War is a Shakespearean drama (to throw your analogy back at you) when it's really just Michael Bay's latest explosion filled wankathon.

And don't tell me a cliffhanger ending is awesome after everybody complained about Halo 2 doing the same thing.

Ok, there we can largely agree. Gears I found to be extremely good fun, but it wasn't really doing anything we handn't seen before (although in my opinion it did it very well), while its developers and a lot of its fanboys do seem to suggest that it is a brick in the house of the Brave New World. Aspects of the game were horribly overhyped, and I suspect that you (like myself) won't buy the "all the other developers do it!" argument. They should be more honest about what they are selling.

Is it a rational thing that I do not know who Cliffy B is, and am unaware of [policies?] of his that are generating gamers' ire?

Cliff Bleszinski is just an arrogant twat. I agree that Gears of War 1 & 2 and Shadow Complex are really cool and fun games, but thinking that shooters are the only real games out there is just totally wrong.

I'd like to hear his opinion about an epic and awesome game like Shadow of the Colossus and then see how he gets brutally beaten up by a horde of Locu- ehm sorry, fans.

LEAVE CLIFFY ALONE! - to be played with much crying and sobbing in youtube format.

The man has every right to express his opinion and since the media are prepared to listen, good for him; calling him any less for making a videogame that you personally don't like or having an opinion that differs from your own only shows your own childishness.
Whoah, it's my necroed remains. Why did this need to be dug up?
