But all that said, whether or not Mirror's Edge will be any good, you can't get away from the fact that Gears of War is a lot of fun. And very successful - the guy has earned his arrogance.
No he didn't.
Any poor schmuck could make up a game like Gears Of War and overhype it.
The formula for it is so simple and it has been seen before a lot of times. Seriously, gears of war was never a big deal, it's mediocre just like Halo 3. Yes it's fun but which game isn't fun on this day and age?
Go for it then, and best of luck to you. I know I certainly couldn't design a game as solid and as entertaining as Gears or Halo, but if I could, would I be proud of myself? Hell yeah!

Games like Mirror's Edge, Psychonaughts etc may be more to our tastes than these mainstream games but that doesn't mean we should take away from them that they succeed admirably at their own strengths. Criticising a game for being "over-hyped" is pointless - that isn't the games fault, it's just a natural side effect of advertising and it has nothing to do with how well the game will match your tastes. It's up to you and you alone if you want to pay any attention to any games hype.

That's just it Gears of War didn't succeed on it's own strength the first game came out when there was a void in the 360 line up. There was nothing to play, Gears filled that void; however as a game it's simply not very good when you actually pay attention to how the mechanics don't work properly, (See nonsensical lack of reticle in a third person game which just forces cover onto the player for no real reason. Broken controls if you used anything but the defaults, and stupid as all fuck friendly AI.) how the creators openly admit to using cookie-cutter stereotypes for their characters, (For the sequel.) and start to see that the level design in Gears consisted of oddly placed rubble to be used for cover. It was so bad that you started to realize you were playing a game, this is a problem GRAW 1 didn't even have and that came out before Gears.

The creator of the first Devil May Cry is far more entitled to be arrogant since his game all but resurrected an all but dead genre by itself, Hideo Kojima deserves to be arrogant since he created the stealth genre, what did Clifford do? He created a game that from it's very inception was and is in a word derivative.

GoW 2 is a bit buggy and has failed to keep my interest like most games this year and Mirrors Edge looks like its trying to do something new which I like but looks like it will just become another game in my pile after completing the story since there is not much of a multiplayer apart from racing others Ghosts.

But onto Cliff Bleziniki(sp?) as most people have said he is a bit of idiot since having heard the stuff he says such as this "In war you don`t see soldiers jumping around like cracked up rabbits" which is true but to my memory doesnt that mean he is talking bad about the Unreal series which Epic makes.

"I want to see the gunplay..."

Who the hell needs guns in EVERY game...

Oh wait gore-and-boom-fest DUMB-ARSES. I wonder if he ever played Zelda and asked:
"Where are teh guns?".

Both of those articles tell me that this guy is truly stupid.

Gears of War 2, however, fixed most of those issues. The targeting reticule, by the way, is activated when you press LT.

Ugh... this guy is complaining that someone else has made a game... with no guns?

Not that I expected anything different from Epic Games, the company responsible for Gears of War, one of the worst influences on the gaming industry in history.

I always thought that guy was a douche, he made Gears of War so he's obviously god. Even though I absolutely hate Gears. And I like the how Mirror's edge went away from the norm of today's gaming industry. It moved away from gunplay and even games Like Assassin's Creed were meant for stealth, but were easily beaten as a hack and slash-esque game. But Cliff is all about the guns I guess, and maybe he's just jealous, but who knows?

Now for the demos side - I like demos. A lot. Most of the time they decide if I'm going to buy a game or not. Comparing it to bad sex is such an awful analogy. Demos leave you with a little taste of a game, and it makes you want more. It's not like demos have every feature, if they had that, sure you could say that you played it and you didn't like it, but demos like Mirror's Edge leave you with a small portion of the game and it certainly made me wanting more.

Asking about the gunplay of Mirror's Edge is pretty irrelevant, indeed. The core gameplay is not the shooting, and the game could have shipped without it. It's like saying "I'll wait to see the gunplay" before Portal was released.

One thing is that even though Cliff Bleszinski isn't probably as smart as he thinks he is, and by far, I dont think he could be in the position he's now if he was completly stupid. What he said about Mirror's Edge could be just motivated by marketing. Just making a statement, that will undermine the game for the potential average Gears of War players (the people who aren't going to notice that his statement is irrelevant) in order to prevent sales of Gears of War 2 to be slighly affected by Mirror's Edge. It could be just a part of a marketing strategy, after all.

But it's still a stupid statement.

About the demos, although I disagree with him, I think he makes some sense.
Besides the fact that it can sometimes ruin the hype for a game, it can hurt it as well, even if the game is good, for certain people.
A demo allows you to experience the specific gameplay of a game, before actually playing it. That's what makes them annoying for people like the guys at EPIC. With a demo, you can pretty much play it, experience the Gears of War cover system and gunplay style, and get over with it. A better exemple would be Brother in Arms : Hell's Highway. This game has a very specific gameplay. And with a demo, you can experience it without buying the game.
Try to think as a developper. Cliff Bleszinski probably plays a lot of games to experience their gameplay, even though he probably doesn't finish them all. For people like him, a demo is great, because you can experience with it the gameplay, without actually buying the game.
He probably thinks in those terms, forgetting that most people play games to enjoy them from start to finish, get the story, and often replay them.

But, a demo that doesn't make you want to buy the full game fails at what it does. So, even, if he's got his reasons for saying this, he shouldn't be talking about demos like that.

which is true but to my memory doesnt that mean he is talking bad about the Unreal series which Epic makes.
He worked on it himself, from Unreal in 1998 to Unreal Tournament 2004. So no, he was not talking bad, he was just saying that with Gears, they were going for realism in gameplay schemes. (Whereas in the Unreal Series, they make fun games without much concern for realism)

They should make "Mirrors edge 2: Run from the fuzz" or a European version "le edge du mirror: échapper de le flic"
lol
It would be "Le bord du miroir : échapper aux flics"
By the way, Video Games usually don't get their names translated when they're released in France, although there are some exceptions (like the Red Alert series translated into "Alerte Rouge").

Richard Garriot? Are you serious? That man has been a total has been for years now. He used to be a real bad ass of the video game world. Now he is sadly a nothing. I hope he proves me wrong since he left NCSoft.

I agree with everything negative about Cliffy B here.

I'll go on to say that Cliff and his minions (Satan, being on of them) go round at night chainsawing the heads off kiddies and pensioners, then calling it 'good game design'.

Personally I think someone who is known to be a follower of the Khemer Rouge and Pol Pot shouldn't be allowed to comment on video games, ever.

Its despicable that deviants like Cliffy B, who is currently training a squadron of giant bats to steal the souls of school children, should be given any attention by the media.
----------------------
No, seriously, how many people in this thread had their beloved childhood pet run over by Cliffy B? Did he also then blind you with sulfuric acid, making you unable read the articles in the OP?

I'm pretty he wasn't saying the game needed guns, rather that it needed some kind of incentive to keep you moving and on your toes. He probably just tossed guns out there as an example, because, lets face it, most video games feature guns in some form.

I could be entirely wrong, but I'm more inclined to agree with Lanslide, since he has actually met the guy, rather than people who have read (or not read) a few quotes that could have easily been taken out of context.

And as for the claim that Gears of War is dragging the gaming industry down, I'm almost certain fans of Atari Adventure [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_Adventure] said the same thing about Super Mario.

I'm getting a bit tired of all this ranting on mainstream games. Okay, so Gears of War isn't exactly deep. It's not supposed to be! The game's iconic weapon is a gun with a chainsaw on the end. Everyone treats it like it's supposed to be as deep as the Marianas Trench, not a pretty wadding pool filled the with the blood and viscera of your enemies. Like it's ruining gaming. The type of people who game for Gears are not the kind of people who appreciate things like Mirrors Edge. I played about the first half of Mirror's Edge when my friend came over the other day. It's a pretty fun game. However the gun play is, understandably, lacking. I'm cool with that. Making a platforming game in the first person is cool and interesting and makes me want to play it, whereas I normally hate playing platformers. However, the slight problem is that far too often there are enemies. Who frequently stand in your way. Several of them. And while the AI is not too accurate, when it is accurate, it is very accurate, aiming just right so that as the bullet enters Faith, it ricochets through her body into her brain.

Also, so what if Cliffy B is an asshole? If you think he's an asshole, tell him to go fuck himself and stop reading things he says that makes you angry.

The guy must not know a lot about demos and xbox.

I BUY games I would NEVER buy because of a demo i'll download. I mean, I fucking own ROCKEY AND BULLWINKLE for the xbox live arcade because one day with a friend we were downloading shit and playing it and the game BLEW OUR MINDS. I mean it's a horrible game and not worth 1200 microsoft points but SOMEHOW in a spurr of the moment thing I bought that game.

LEAVE CLIFFY ALONE! - to be played with much crying and sobbing in youtube format.

The man has every right to express his opinion and since the media are prepared to listen, good for him; calling him any less for making a videogame that you personally don't like or having an opinion that differs from your own only shows your own childishness.
