The tavern girl's eyes widened as Kia the fox came bounding towards them with Cora hanging limp in her jaws. She immediately took him from her, and brushed the saliva off his feathers, straightening them from their awkward position. Cora, unable to move, communicated a deep wave of relief and appreciation to his companion, who in turn thanked the fox and returning cobra and each of the women with the most sincerity she had ever expressed. Cora relaxed, and slipped back into unconsciousness.
"The plan?" she asked, thinking seriously. The tavern girl had been so focused on rescuing her companion, she had not considered any logical progression for the situation. She had no food, spare clothes or possessions, and was certainly ill prepared for any kind of traveling. She gazed intently at the forest around her, imagining where this search for treasure might take her. The sun had fallen and the forest was dark and cool, but the moonlight filtering through the tree tops was bright enough to illuminate the outlines of the trees around.
"I guess I don't have a plan" she admitted, cradling her unconscious companion. Cora was safe and she was free from the confines of the tavern and the watchful eye of her father for the first time in her life, that was all that mattered to her now. She looked at the two women, scanning their faces, barely visible in the sparse moonlight. She had never before been asked to contribute to any kind of decision making, and was not entirely sure how to handle the situation, and had no real strong desires to do anything except not go back to the tavern. Sitting in the forest, amongst the bushes and cool breeze with the two kind strangers stirred a feeling of peace yet awakeness she had never felt before. She reached down and touched the soil and crushed the moist fallen leaves between her fingers, an earthy aroma filled the air. She felt alive.
