"Well I closed an hour ago, but that's fine, I guess. Come with me, we'll go and grab one." Durkon led Kadence to a barrel filled with them. "Got a bunch of whetstones right here. They're 2 silver each." He fuddled around with the stones, slapped the bucket, then walked back to Prudence standing shyly at the door. "So, mam. Are you staying here tonight?"

"If you'll let us," she said.

"Of course, my dear, of course. That means you'll be staying to?" he asked back at Kadence.

"Thanks." Kadence handed Durkon four silver from her bag and retrieved two stones that she put into her pack. She shuffled items around to make everything fit.

When the man addressed her again she looked up. "If it's alright with you. I would appreciate a place to stay, thanks." she replied.

The tavern girl, unsure of where to turn, headed back down the path she had come from; she spun on her feet to race in the opposite direction and almost crashed into the kind guard, who immediately inquired about what had happened, obviously registered the panic on her face.

"My... my..." she started between breaths, "I think my, errr..." she didn't know whether to tell the truth or not, it was not common to be bonded to an animal commonly considered a pest and she did not know how people would react. "I think someone might be in trouble, someone close to me, but I can't get past the main gate." She let out a defeated sigh and cast a deeply worried glance in the direction she sensed the cry for help.

"Well if you don't have any other place to stay, I'd appreciate the company." Durkon led the girls back the house section of his building. "So how long are you staying?"

"Just the night," Prudence said, feeling more comfortable. "we're leaving the city tomorrow morn."

"That's too bad. Well make yourselves at home. Supper will be ready in a bit." He walked back to the kitchen and got out more food for the two new guests.

Kadence walked over to one of the wooden chair and sat down. Garret padded into the room behind the group and walked in a large circle before lying on the ground. He lay with his side pressed against a wall and his head pointed toward his partner. Kadence suspected that when the food arrive he would move closer but the wolf appeared comfortable and at ease for the moment.

She grasped the strap of her pack and pulled it over her head then carefully set the pack down on the ground. Carrying the increasingly heavy bag around had made her shoulder a bit sore so she stretched her arm out for a few seconds then returned to a neutral position. Kadence lightly drummed her fingers against the side of the chair.

Durkon started preparing food for everyone as Prudence sat down in another chair across from Kadence. She set the pack down next to her and lost herself in thoughts of home and outside of the city. A good while later, Durkon came back out carrying four plates again. He placed the three with cooked meat and vegetables on the table, and the other with rare meat on the floor. He himself sat down on the north side and motioned the girls to join him.

Prudence got up, walked over, and sat down in the seat she had last time. She waited for Kadence before eating.

"Thanks for the food, sir." Kadence said, after she'd taken a few bites. Garret had moved quickly to the raw meat plate when it was set down. The occasional snap of teeth could be heard coming from the floor level as the wolf enjoyed his meal. The meat Durkon served the humans was well cooked and very good, Kadence decided. She divided her forkfuls of food between the meat and vegetables equally.

"Who is in trouble?" Zestia asked the tavern girl. She had followed Sai. Shade was lying on her shoulders as usual. Zestia was a little worried for the tavern girl.

"Just calm down and tell us. Maybe we can help."

Prudence looked down and wondered how Kadence afforded to feed the beast everyday. It didn't matter to her, though, so she proceeded to eat her meal quietly.

"It's not a problem," Durkon said as he started eating. Contrary to what he told her, there was a problem with him feeding them. He usually only had enough money to feed himself, much less two other people and a wolf. He didn't let on, though, and was secretly happy they were leaving the next day.

Viktorya nodded her head as Lev spoke.

"But how do the expect to find the place? does anyone even have a vague idea where it is?"

she took a sip of her drink before carrying on

"The gold sure is tempting but if i went in search for it i really doubt my chances of finding it"

Kadence savored the last few bites of meat. Garret, having long since finished his meal, had his head resting on her leg but she paid no attention to his mock-mournful look. He had his food, and she had hers.

When Kadence had finished all of the food on the plate before her she pushed the plate slightly away from her out of habit. Recalling how the last night at this place had ended she glanced at Pru then peered down the nearby hallway. She didn't wish to deprive Durkon of his bed this time. Kadence frowned and wondered if perhaps she would need to find an Inn after all.

When Prudence finished her meal, Durkon stood up and collected the plates and utensils. He took them to the kitchen, stacked them in a pile with other dirty dishes, and came back to the girls. "I'll sleep in the shop again tonight then. I'll go make up the rooms." He walked over, grabbed the two bags, and took them to his and the guest rooms. He started fixing up the beds.

Kadence stood up and pushed in her chair then stretched for a few minutes. Garret stood up as well and paced the room once before sitting down next to his partner. Kadence turned to Pru while they waited for Durkon to finish with the beds.

"We can head to the stables first thing in the morning." she said. She paused, then added, "After we stop by a tavern or inn to eat of course."

Durkon took the bags to the rooms.
"That's fine," she lied. Even though Pru know she shouldn't, she still wanted to stay in the city as long as possible. "I guess that'll be alright."

Garret yawned again and this time an accompanying wave of exhaustion hit Kadence. Though Kadence herself wasn't tired she knew her Companion wanted to rest and he wouldn't do so out here. She turned and addressed Pru. "Sorry, but we are tired, so I'm going to go see if the beds are ready. Have a good night." She nodded to the girl then walked down the hallway.

Kadence opened the door to the small room she'd slept in last time. The room was the same, a mattress and a small table. As she entered the room she saw her pack had been placed on the table but there was no sign of Durkon in or outside of the room. She shrugged and sat down on the bed. Garret circled the small room then lay down at the foot of the bed, facing the doorway.

The wolf made a sound similar to a sigh and Kadence smiled. Here the wolf would relax. He could guard the door and both of their enhanced hearing would ensure that they would notice anyone approaching. Garret even seemed to be able to remain alert while sleeping, something Kadence hadn't been able to master yet. Her Companion was very quick to alert her of trouble when it occurred though. During their travels she'd been awaken from a dead sleep several times by his short growl and piercing waves of danger pounding into her skull.

Kadence lay back on the bed and thought about the places that they had traveled. She wondered if any of the guards she'd talked to in other towns knew about these Ruins the king spoke of. Her quiet "Hmm." caused Garret's ears to raise slightly then settle down again.

After few minutes she drifted off to sleep.

Sai put her hands on the tavern girls shoulders. "Listen girl you need to calm down. We'll help you save your friend, if your coming with us we can't have you worried about your friend, it could get you hurt." She said with a smile. Kia sat near by, her head cocked at the tavern girl in wonder.

"Good night then!" Prudence called to Kadence. Sue looked at her real quick, then went back to thinking about whatever birds think about. Durkon came in a minute later and told her the room was ready. "Thank you so much Durkon," she said.

"Don't mention it, mam. It's been an honor having you in my house." Prudence walked up and kissed him on the check. He blushed.

"You're a great man. I wouldn't know what to do without you." She walked away from the man standing still in the room and walked to her's. She opened up the pack by her bed and Sue flew up to the nest in the windowsill. Prudence pulled out the first book she saw. It was a small storybook that she hadn't seen before in the family library. After examining the brand new leather binding, she cracked the spine and read herself to sleep.

Lev shrugged slightly, "That's probably why the reward is so large, send hundreds of people out into the land with the goal of finding it, and sooner or later somebody will stumble upon it."

He stifled a yawn before continuing, noting that it was getting pretty dark outside. "And it's not like I'm going for the sole reason of finding it, my first priority is still going to be patching up the sods who don't make it on their own. And I reckon that will take me in the direction of the ruins in some way or another, so I might as well sign up." He looked down at Tatiana as he spoke, and noticed that she looked kind of drowsy, with her head firmly planted upon her paws and her eyes closed, even her tail wasn't moving as much as it had earlier.

"But for now I think I'll rest up for tomorrow. And then I'll leave a little after daybreak, after signing in with the guards. And you're welcome to tag along if you want, but I'll be leaving regardless. Goodnight." Lev said as pushed back his chair and roused Tatiana from her slumber, receiving a killing glare in return, before he headed up to the room, Tatiana following him somewhat reluctantly.

The tavern girl took a deep breath, but this did nothing to alleviate her worry, perhaps the two would not be so cool-headed had they also experienced her vision. "It's my..." she paused. If she honestly were to be leaving this town once and for all with these strangers, they would find out the nature of her companion sooner or later regardless. "..my companion. He is in trouble. I can sense it is in this direction, but the guards will not allow me to leave the city. What can I do?"

I finally got a Nintendo DS today, so forgive me if I am a little 'distracted' from posting :p

"First off, what animal is your companion? You seem to be avoiding telling us what it is." Zestia said with a cool, calm voice.
She wanted to help this tavern girl find her companion, but she couldn't if she didn't tell them what animal it was.
Shade watched the whole thing from Zestia's side. He had slithered off her shoulders.
