"Wait.." After being hurried out of the shop and into the street Kadence stepped a few paces away and turned to look at the blushing girl with an unreadable expression. "Your last name is Shea....as in the noble family Shea...you're a noble" she said quietly.

That would explain the owl Companions...among other things. Kadence thought. Garret sat down beside of his partner while she processed this new information. She looked down at the wolf when he pawed at the ground. Kadence looked back up at Pru and tilted her head slightly.

"What if..." Kadence started, then trailed off. She weighed her options. Pru had willingly tagged along for the shopping without complaining once. She'd been rather polite in fact. The girl didn't act the way Kadence had always pictured noble people acting. But since she was a noble and it sounded like her family didn't know where she was...again. That could be trouble. Kadence frowned.

This is a family that tried to force Companion choice and caused Pru to cry at night. Kadence didn't like that thought either and could understand the girl's desire to escape. Plus she did still want company for the journey.

"So...we may need to steer clear of bounty hunters during our trip then..." Kadence commented.

"..." Pru looked at the ground. "I don't think so, anymore," she finally squeezed out. "They, uh, disowned me. I'm sure they don't care about spending the money if I'll just run away again. If they find me, though, they'll grab me." She started to tear up a little. "That's... that's why I wanted to get out of the city. Gemmal is the most dangerous place in the world for me." Sue hopped closer to her face and tried to cheer her up. It didn't help.

Garret made a small noise at the girl's distress and Kadence glanced at him in surprise. Then she shook her head and focused on Pru. "I'm sorry." she said, moving closer to put a hand on the girl's arm briefly before backing up again. She looked down at her pack and calculated what they still needed to get. "We're almost done getting supplies." she noted. "Soon we will be on our way out of the city. Then your family won't find you. You'll be safe."

They'd still have to watch out for danger along the trail but at least her family would be less likely to find them while they were moving. Kadence made a note to look for other travelers who appeared trustworthy to join their group.

Prudence dried her eyes the best she could (which wasn't very well) and followed behind Kadence again. Sue had backed down to the end of her shoulder again. "So, what supplies would that be?" Pru asked after a while of walking. "I've got food for Sue for a couple of days, and you have some for the other three of us."

"I'd like to stop by the blacksmith then check with one of the stables to see if they have a packhorse, or any horses, available." Kadence replied. Then she recalled that they hadn't eaten since this morning. Now that she remembered that she felt a bit hungry. "We could get some food at a inn or a tavern." she said as she looked around for the nearest tavern sign. Garret looked at his partner when she mentioned food but there was no accompanying wave of hunger so she decided he wasn't really hungry.

Viktorya steped into the Inn with the large bear, she gave a greeting to the Inn keeper, a lifetime with the bear had taught her that bringing a hungry bear anywhere at all was bound for trouble, feeding him was always a trouble in city areas, the meals being little more than Snacks for the bears phenominal appitie.

on their trip back north they'd hunt down something of worth, Elk or Ram was always a favourite. She steped into the Common area, hoping for a free tale with alot of space.

The world faded into consciousness. Cora slowly opened his eyes, gradually grasping a sense of awareness as blurred figures and confusing noises penetrated his dulled senses, trying to make sense of his dizzy surroundings as he lay paralyzed in a mass of black feathers. He focused his eyes on the movement he could distinguish among the mosaic of shapes and colours, the images reluctantly sharpening into the figure of an old human woman, haggard and weatherbeaten, hunched over as she weaved black feathers into a dark cloak.

Black feathers...

Cora was hit with a rush of adrenaline, his heart pounded in his chest but his body would not respond. He lay in a pile of brethren, fellow crows, both familiar and unknown. They lay dead and paralyzed in a haphazard pile of feathers, their limp wings sprawled out at unnatural angles and their heads flopped back over the bodies of others. A mangy red fox sat at the womans side, chewing on the naked body of a plucked crow, loudly crunching the birds bones between its teeth, tearing its wings from its wrinkled grey body. Cora, searched his memories for the last thing he saw, a conspicuous pile of crumbs coming to mind, a gathering of crows around it, gorging themselves on the abundant food. He recalled several passing companions sniffing the pile of food, they behaved strangely, flattening their ears against their skulls, retreating with tucked tails and yipping loudly at the crows, he realized in retrospect they would have been able to smell the poison. Unable to move, he closed his eyes and uttered a silent plea.....
....help...

The tavern girl was gripped with a wave of nausea. She stopped dead in her tracks, in the middle of the dusty and crowded street, and fell to her knees, clasping her quivering hands to her forehead. The street faded out of view and flashes of strange images assaulted her mind, an old woman hunched over a dark feathered cloak, limp dead crows.... hundreds of them. Cora. The images and nausea was gone as soon as it appeared, she felt suddenly aware of herself kneeling in the middle of the street, her sweaty hands, the rough pavement beneath her knees, and the quizzical eyes of passing strangers. She stood up as quickly as she could and dusted her knees with a single swift brush of her hand. Cora was in trouble.

She broke out into a run, though she did not know the maze of crowded streets, her instincts guided her swiftly to the main gate. "Stop right there young lady," called the guard, grabbing her by the arm as she attempted to run past in her haste to find her companion, "no one leaves without papers and permission." She stared at the guard in disbelief, her chest heaving as she caught her breath. "But..." she managed between breaths before being cut off, "but nothing, rules are rules, I'm sorry, you'll have to return with your papers." he said with a tone of resounding finality, giving her a gentle push back towards the direction she had come from. She stood there momentarily, considering her options, her eyes examining the formidably high wall that surrounded the city.

Damn!! What can I do???
...Cora....

Lev saw the blacksmith woman and her lumbering companion from the day before enter the common area, what was their names again...? Ah, yes. Viktorya and Ursa if he remembered correctly.

Tatiana looked up from her bone, which was now more or less free of meat, and moved her tail in agitation at the sight of the enormous, dimwitted bear. She didn't like bears, and this one especially so. So she settled into scowling at him and keeping silent for now, as Lev would likely reprimand her if she showed more hostility while they were inside.

Lev pondered if he should call them over, he usually wasn't thrilled about the company of strangers, but she was probably the one he knew the best in the entire city. And who knows, maybe she was also going on the quest? That would indeed save him a lot of time in looking for traveling companions. So he raised his hand a little and called out to her, "Hello Viktorya, still have business in the city?"

"Whatever you need from a blacksmith I'm sure Durkon has. I'd like to see him again before we leave, anyway." Prudence readjusted the heavy pack. "But a tavern sounds good. And there's one just up ahead, too."

"I just need a sharpening stone, so your friend may have one for sale." Kadence nodded before looking over to see that there was indeed a tavern nearby. She altered her steps to head in that direction, being careful not to run into anyone who was walking in the opposite direction. Garret moved a bit faster to be in front of Kadence as they approached the tavern entrance. She opened the door so that the wolf could to step inside and then held the door open for Pru.

"Thank you," Prudence said to Kadence for what felt like the fifth time her partner had held the door. She walked in and found a seat far away from the entrance. Sue flew down to the table and Pru placed the pack on the ground.

Garret followed Pru to the table as Kadence stopped to look around for a waiter or waitress. She spotted a waiter on his way back to the front counter and waved at him before indicating the table Pru had chosen. The waiter nodded in a distracted manner before continuing his hurried journey. Satisfied that they would get service soon, Kadence walked over to the table and pulled out a chair to sit down in. Garret seemed to dislike the floor of the tavern. He shifted his paws as he sat next to his partner instead of lying at her feet as he usually did.

Prudence looked around scared and fascinated. She had only been to a tavern perhaps once or twice and that was with Durkon. She figured Kadence would know what to do and that she would do it for them whenever the server came around. There aren't as many companions as I would imagine being here, she thought. I guess theirs aren't small like Sue and would rather stay at home.

Kadence looked across the table at Pru and grinned. Now she knew why the girl seemed out of place at what, to her, where common locations. She glanced around the tavern for the waiter but didn't see him. Probably helping another customer she thought.

"They make good stew here." she commented as she debated on what she would order. Knowing they would soon be eating a lot of meat, she decided against roast pork and picked stew with bread. Kadence leaned her chair back as she tried again to locate the waiter. After a few moments she spotted him and waved. Fortunately the young man saw her and started heading in the direction of the table.

When the waiter arrived Kadence told him what she wanted, a bowl of vegetable stew, a small loaf of bread, and a glass of water. Then the waiter turned toward Pru. Kadence waited for a few seconds before she addressed the waiter again. "She'll have the same thing." she told him.

The man hesitated for an instant, then nodded and walked away to give their order to the cook. "Sorry about that." Kadence apologized to Pru. "I hope stew is okay with you."

Pru snapped out of whatever trance she was in and looked back over at Kadence. "Hm? Oh, yeah, that seems alright," she told her. She took out the bag of bird seed and poured some into a small bowl that the waiter left at the table. Sue flew over and started pecking at it. "..." Pru lost herself in her mind again.

"Sorry for that," she said, coming back from it. "I guess I'm just worried."

"About your family?" Kadence asked. She turned to tap Garret gently on the head, who moved to the side to allow her room to place her pack on the ground. The wolf sniffed at the pack and then lay down on the floor, with his head resting slightly on top of the closed bag. Kadence grinned briefly. At least this way no one would try to take her pack.

"A little." Sue looked at her for a moment then went back to eating. "It's terribly hard, you know? I guess you don't. It's just, I still love them. They kept me in the same room most of my life and Bishop, father's owl, always hated Sue. I had to run away just so that I wouldn't be forced with the family companion, but the bad things are always the easiest to remember. We had a library and I could read near any book I wanted from it, there was always above average food to eat, any tangible thing I wanted was just one request away. They protected me from things I didn't realize I needed protection from.

"They loved me, I still love them, but father is jut too proud to believe his daughter wants to experience life around outside his walls, I guess. You can't understand, and I doubt you pity me because of how much I had, but it's hard. It's just really hard."

Viktorya tuned her head to the sound of her name and her face light up as she spotted the Doctor form the North.

"Oh hello!" As she walked towards the man at his table "Lev wasn't it?, a pleasure to meet you again" as she put out a hand to shake

The bear sat itself down slowly, the wooden boards creaking as the beast did so, its stomach rumbling singlying its hunger

"Why yes i do, were just getting a bite to eat before we check out the goods at the City Smith, cant have the bear deciding to make a snack of a pedestrain" She laughed gently

"And you? you must've heard the Kings speech, what did you think?, Secret ruins and the promise of riches, its like something out of a tall tale no?

"Indeed, and a lot of people are going to get hurt, or worse, due to their ignorance and greed. So I'm going to be heading it the same direction for now, to patch up and send home those who finally figure out that they've bitten over more than they can chew. And I might as well sign up for the quest in that case, its not like there's a penalty for not turning up anything." Lev answered her as he put a couple of silver down next to his platter, to pay for his meal.

Tatiana had completely lost interest in the bone, and was now grooming her face of any blood left from the meat in an attempt to deny the bears presence.
