OH BUT WAIT -2 DAMAGE WHEN ATTACKED BY SCOUT WEARING CERTAIN HAT! SHIT! GAME BALANCE GONE!
As I said before, the fact of the matter is that a few years back we would've been unlocking this stuff through gameplay, which would lengthen the value of the game to endless hours trying to scrounge up enough in-game currency for a hat or two.

Also, because I sympathize with /v/ that means I am a troll and a fascist.

I'm not bothered about portal 2. 1 was great, dark comedy, I only paid a few quid for it (£12 for my copy of orange box) and stuck with me.
This one's almost 10 times the price, the dark comedy's at least diluted with stephen merchant's slapstick act and there's this PAY X TO USE CONTENT shite that I don't want to encourage.
I'll save my money for a game I think's worth it.

Link discusses the following assertions:

1) Portal 2 is 4 hours long
2) Day 1 DLC
3) Console port
4) The Potato Sack ARG was a con

Regarding Day 1 DLC, it says:

There is no ?Day 1 DLC?. There is the daft store, with all the overpriced guff that aesthetically augments your co-op character for the enjoyment of the one other person you?re playing with. I?m very happy to be disparaging about such silly expense, but it absolutely isn?t missing content for the game being charged for on top of the box price. That is something that gets me really riled, and something that I think openly mocks the customer ? discovering that even though they?ve paid for the game, if they want to full version with all the missions/levels/weapons, then they need to pay more. But that?s in no way the case here. You?re not missing out on anything, but for some pointless skins and hats for the co-op character that make no difference at all to the game.
This, most people are bitching about nothing.

And the potato sack was good, not enough people bought it and hey, they are helping the indies with that. The game wouldnt be delayed if people didnt finished it, the game would just come earlier, it was a bonus.

The console port is total bullshit, it may say "Dont turn of your console" but if there is no problem with the PC version why do people complaint? IT WORKS PERFECTLY, no bad optimization, no wrong icons with buttons of the Xbox instead of the keyboard, it works and just because of that little detail shit hit the fan.

About the lenght, I have heard different lenghts, but yeah, that is up to the costumer to see if he wants to buy a 4 hour game for 60$ or not.

They've admitted on record stat-hats were a bad idea

They haven't done it again.

It really is extraordinary how the valve defence force are denying that paying for content is not DLC. It's pretty disgraceful, and I'm far from the only person in this thread to think so.

I can't bring myself to care about pointless content, so am happy not to be paying for it outright :/

It's such a small issue being blown out of proportion as if someone has trodden on holy principles. If DLC was required to unlock levels or mechanics, it'd be a different story. But this?

I don't like DLC, but it's the direction the market is going.

No problem if they were genuine user reviews, but it's an unrepresentative, zealous hate-campaign.

That's a rhetorical question, isn't it?

Anywhoo, your screenshot indicates most of everyone in the thread's infancy is against it.

I for one am glad that people are taking a stand against DLC.

This may be the wrong way to go about it, but at least they are letting the companies know we're sick and tired of getting shafted by their ridiculous day one DLC bullshit.
There's a bit of a difference between in game skins and horse armour-type things and levels etc. I don't really get why people would pay for skins, especially in a 2 player game where your mate would just laugh at you, but I'm not gonna tell you what you can buy.

If they put a map-pack as dlc I'd be pissed, because they should have put it in the initial game.
Seems costumes and weapon packs are the most harmless of Day 1DLC. Lots of games feature exclusive content for various chains or the collector edition. Letting people spend a dollar to but the Tron outfit for LBP2 isn't a big deal. If I really like a game and want to throw a few more bucks to the devs, I'll pick up some of these cheapies. Just this morning I grabbed a couple vehicle/weapon packs for Just Cause 2... just a bit of fun.

Fables 3 is the only game that's pissed me off with this sort of thing, because they created obvious holes in their inventory for the more OCD of their fans. But mostly buying silly hats is just for fun.

The fact that the game exists at all is pure greed though, no?
We can argue the semantics of business and art all day long but what I'm trying to say is that Valve used to pride themselves over putting their artistic endeavours ahead of their profit margins and now they seem to have given up on that idea.

Now of course, that's because they are a business and it's their prerogative to make money. Not judging them as people. But it does suck a little for gamers that it's happened and to me they lose a little of their artistic integrity when they start doing day one DLC and releasing sequels to L4D a year later without supporting the first game how they promised.

Valve have buckets of money from taking a cut of sales returns through Steam (50% of PC games are now bought on steam, according to wikipedia). There's no reason for them to put this stuff in, they're rolling in it.

Okay - but who whines about the lack of something pointless?
It's the principle.

No matter how small, people who spend less money get less content.

Watch this escalate when HL3 comes out - spend an extra few dollars for a blue crowbar and even more dollars for a new skin for Alyx... then break your bank to get the extra level where Gordon kills the
advisor

Anyone on this forum spewing Portal 2 hate is likely part of the /v/ collective.

The fact of the matter is a few years back, the Portal store wouldn't have existed, or, if it had, it would've been virtual currency. We wouldn't be spending money for a thumbs-up gesture or a color scheme. [iWe'd[/i] be unlocking it through constant play of the game we paid for. I'd prefer to pay more for Portal 2 at retail than to have Day 1 DLC. I'm serious. I'd prefer to pay $80+ for all the DLC instead of having that damned store.

There was just a thread about something like this today, if VALVe is really so strapped for cash that they need the damned Mann store or the Portal store, I'd rather pay more at retail, or do that Extra Credit thing where I pay less at retail and pay more for the rest of the features.
If Portal 2 came out a few years ago it wouldnt have a store and it wouldnt have those skins and emotes, those skins and emotes are in there because of the store, if there wasnt the store do you think they would waste time to make worthless shit? It would be like the first portal, actually just look at any other game that came before the TF2 store, NONE of them have unlockable skins or emotes.

If Portal 2 didnt had the store that content wouldnt be there because that content is just for the people that are willing to buy it. It is worthless content that some guys with money might think "Why the hell not?" and buy it.

I must say that I have finished playing Portal 2 and I did enjoy it, heck I'm probably going to replay it when I have the chance.

Did I feel it was too short? Yes, I finished single player in about 5.5 hours (possibly because I recently replayed Portal)
Would I still buy it if I didn't own it? Yes.
Would I still buy it at the price it's at? No, it's to short to justify the price tag imo.

Also, the "DLC" thing they talk about is silly. Personally VALVe made me sad by having that store, as it seems completely pointless and just a money grab.

Aside from the length and the "DLC" or "Shop" or w/e you want to call it, I have no complaints about Portal 2.

As for this whole "Rating it 0" thing, I think it's silly. I thought it was uncalled for with DA2, and I feel it's uncalled for now.

The type of DLC is not stated, nor any kind of gripe I can see. They just seem to say "hey lets metabomb." Looks like it's just for shits and giggles.

Nope, I do believe in the blue crowbar and the skin for Alyx, but not the mission. The store only has useless shit that are not necessary for anything, you only buy the items if you want to. You never loose content that would make the game better or worse, you just loose content that would mean nothing for the game.
