Here we have the Debs instead of prom. My Debs will be in October and involves going to Kildare, all night clubbing and bus ride home the next morning. I'm not the most socially adept, and I don't have a girlfriend, but I'm still going because it'll be the last chance for our year to do something together. It wouldn't be my cup of tea but I'm going anyway because, as the old saying goes, "why not?"

i didn't junior year (america...) because iw as in the same mindset as you are

but i went to my senior year of prom... only to find out its the least ammount of fun you'll have with a bunch of your friends.

the next night i went to a friends birthday party which was set up ironically enough just like the prom... and i had more fun there because it was only 40 people and no one cared what you looked like or who you were with.

and it isn't helped by the fact that i've been recovering from intensive surgery and couldn't do much past stand there and look... not half bad.

I did not.

See, my girlfriend had recently broken up with me (in a very bitchy manner if I might add), and so I was very distraught at that point in life. Then, during the rehearsal of the prom, in which three schools come together and the students dance with each other, my ex, who had claimed that she broke up with me because she didn't want a boyfriend, was asked to dance by another guy. Next day, they were together.

I'm not saying that she doesn't have the right to fall in love with someone else, but the fact that she did was kind of a hard blow to me, and I couldn't handle going to the prom.
Oh wow, this is exactly whats happening to me now.......Only, my ex got together with another guy, the day after she dumped me(no, really)...so much for 'I love You' Now im not sure if im going to go to my prom, although there is this one girl, but I cant even talk to her ffs :\
To the OP:
Good on ya! I think I might consider something similar to your idea.
you my friend(s) share the same dilemma as i did.

but mine's a little different. the girl i was going to go with to prom (and i liked her btw) decided to say she cant go because "i don't have time." that was bullshit and i knew it. but i bought it and at prom, what do i see? she's there with another guy. i really wanted to slap her senseless but i just found some of my friends, chilled for a bit, went home, and vented my anger in some super smash brawl. very good outlet for stress!

I never bothered with the prom just because in theory, it was just a bad idea to go. It felt like a waste of time and money.

£5-£10 roughly for tickets.
£100+ to rent a good suit.
£5 for meal.
£10 to cover anything else needed, like petrol to get me out of the dump.

On a good day, it may be £105+. What do I get with that? I get to spend hours surrounded by people I really don't like for a large multitude of reasons, drinking non-alcoholic drinks and listening to music that I wouldn't even listen to ten seconds of if someone linked me a Youtube video of it. For at most £24, I can get a 24 pack of beer, more than enough to get me drunk. I can spend it at home doing whatever I wish only talking to people I like and listening to music I do like. You could make the case "but it's a unique experience!", but so is being run over by a car. I really wouldn't recommend it.

My sixth form will be doing a similar thing (a leaver's do), £10 for tickets and it's likely formal wear. Which, as well as the prom, will be filled with people I don't particularly like. The only difference is I can get drunk, but it'll still be filled with people I don't like in a loud atmosphere filled with bad music. So I'll most likely give it a miss.

I didn't go in fifth year, but I did at the end of sixth year (the last year of school in Scotland). It was fairly enjoyable, and a good way to spend time with people I wasn't really going to see very often in the future. Kinda lame though, even though some of us were 18, the students weren't allowed at the bar. A few teachers were willing to buy people alcohol though. Loads of people sneaked their own drink in anyway. One of my friends had one of those Capri-Sun cartons filled with Jager, which was a small moment of genius.

It was also the first time I had an excuse to wear a kilt, which was an experience.

Afterwards, a load of us went to someone's house, drank more, played some games, and listened to good music.

I went both years in high school (11th & 12th, it was a Junior Prom). Essentially, it was just so my gf could compare her dress to the other girls, but I had fun regardless. I suggest you go, even if you don't have a date and just end up hanging out with your usual suspects. It sounds weird, but when you get older, you will regret not participating in certain activities and wish you had the chance to go back. One last cliche: You never know what will happen on prom night ;)

I didn't, worked instead. Would rather spend the night making money instead of wasting it on what my dad said was the most expensive date he ever went on. Plus I didn't see the point in spending money to rent clothes I didn't like, go to a place I didn't like, and be surrounded by a ton of people I didn't like.

I didn't go my Junior year for that exact reason. But I am going to my senior one...tonight. I'd rather not because it's as expensive as fuck and there's a million other ways to spend the money, but all my friends are going so I feel obligated to.

I was late on the draw. The girl I wanted to ask and really liked found herself going with a friend when I finally got around to talking about prom with her. When I finally lined up another date, it was the last day of prom ticket sales and I didn't have the money on me.

I regret I will be missing prom, most of my friends will be there including the girl I like. I just know I would have been able to wist her away from her friend-date and have at least one dance together, and I know my would-be-date would understand, I know her too.

But all hope is not lost, I'm talking to my crush more than ever now and I'm tryin to buy a ticket off of someone and I know another girl that is dateless to prom.

Prom's not really my kind of place to be, so I didn't go to any of them. I just stayed at home playing Xbox, just like I woulda done any other night.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised at the amount of people on here that didn't go to prom for a variety of reasons. But I am still surprised that there aren't at least a few more positive responses. My prom was awesome even though my girlfriend had broken up with me a month before and I just took a friend. Good food, good music, a lot of friends, and an after party that was weird but left with life long memories.

If I went to my prom, I would just do at every other dance I've ever been to; support the wall and hit the booze hard.
