I do care about the World Cup. I enjoy watching football, and this usually presents some of the best football action to be seen for the four year cycle between tournaments.

i agree with you that this is an important event and that it is worth the watching of every single game.

But i do not agree with the part "usually presents some of the best football action" this is not true especially on the group stage that it is on right now... very bad football, the players and the coach have little time to prepare for each game and the tactics are usually all messed up as we are seing right now, when the WC reaches the 1/4 finals then we start seing some of the good stuff!

for me the World Cup aswell the European Cup is good only to watch because of the charm and enthusiasm the players carry with them on the field, we dont see that on the team´s league football because there it is all about $ and glory ^^ (in the World Cup it is that too but hmmm the pride is even greater! Argentina Vs Brasil for example :O)

Go PORTUGAL!!!!

Have watched every game and plan to watch the rest, I figure its once every 4 years so I can get caught up in it and not feel to silly. But yes the faux patriotism can be annoying, but also hilarious to see people throw there support behind the team from their country, then when they get eliminated the next closest country, and when they're gone just any team that speaks their language.

I personally hate it, but i'm kinda torn. In my depressing slit-wrist inducing part-time job at a supermarket, I have to deal with these moronic eejits on a mass level, all buying booze while roaring "IN-GA-LAND, IN-GA-LAND, UN-GEH-LAND!" to their mates while all sporting generic England football shirts, with the youngest of the bunch getting ID'd and shit starts to "go down" (as in they swear and walk off to the next checkout and also fail to be served again, then repeat).

So in my job I have pretty much majority of people i'm stuck to communicate with on the till talking about it, so I kinda gain the knowledge of whats going on, and ineveitably pretend that I care so i'm "part of the crowd", especially since English people take it oh so seriously.

So i'm just hoping we lose asap so all the flags can come down from peoples houses and the usual short lived patriotic nature of our country disapears, like it always does when we lose

Well, sorta. I kinda care because it's happening in my country this year, which is pretty cool. It's also am amusing little time passer to actually watch a sport, which I've never really been interested in the past. I'm finding it a lot more fun to watch than rugby anyway.

I hate the World Cup not because I can't stand football but because of the fake patriotism surrounding it. All the people who say "we" when what they mean is "the team". "We" didn't do anything. "We" aren't even there. "We" are sitting at home watching the telly. Fucking idiots. And don't even get me started on the adverts.

What I do love, is that all the sponsors of the English team aren't English.
Personally I'm not a big fan of football normally, but when the World Cup comes around I find it too irresistible to not get give it any attention. People know they're not actually playing the match, but the teams are representing the entire nation and therefore those within the nation do have reason to say "we" because although not being physical participants of the game they are still a fundamental part of the team because without them, the nation, there would be no team. And that brings the feeling of belonging that most football fans, and even those not normally orientated by the beautiful game would call patriotism but I really dont see whats "fake" about it at all. These people honestly want their team to win including myself.

GO ON ENGLAND!
Patriotism is love of and devotion to one's country. Not wanting to win a completely banal competition.
And this gives you a chance to support your love for your country. If you had a kid who won a chess tournament (for example), would you not be at all proud to see your kid succeed? Or would you just call it a banal competition?

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.
Props to quoting a classic.

I'm watching it because all my friends are watching it. At least, only the games I find interesting. Brazil vs. PRK, America vs. UK, and the eventual epic finale.

I care only enough to prefer America as the victor. But I will not watch a game, nor care for the final outcome.

I honestly couldn't care less about it -- personally, the sooner England are out, the better, so then things can get round to normal around here. What with the excessive (and I mean EXCESSIVE) amount of advertising, commercialism, merchandise etc., I was sick of the World Cup before it had even began.

I just really don't see the point in gaping at a television screen, watching a group of grown men in shorts kick a ball around a field, surrounded by jeering monkeys.

And don't even get me started on the 'patriotism'. No, you're not supporting your country, and everything that it stands for, and all its accomplishments -- you're cheering on a goddamn sports team. When Rooney (or whoever) stops halfway through the game to start flinging pants at starving orphans, THEN I'll say they're doing something even remotely worthwhile.

2 things:
1:it's england, not britain or the UK, Wales and Scotland have their own teams, plus england will lose before the semi-finals anyway, they just suck at playing tournaments
2: It's called football, NOBODY says soccer (save the americans[united states that is])

i just love the world cup, it gives me a reason to gget drunk between monday and thursday, i like to watch the games. And the world cup is pretty much the only time in Germany when it's okay to like your country (however shitty it may be)

on a sidenote: ban the fucking vuvuzelas

I'm not a big soccer/Football fan but the world cup is so much more than just a mere sport event, it's a social event where masses can root for their country ...did i mentioned that I'm German?

That's about when I start actually watching. Right now, the reason for watching is to see North Korea surprise everybody by scoring goals, or to watch the weaker teams get sledgehammered into oblivion.

Also, can't wait for somebody like SimuLord to weigh into these discussions.
omg North Koread can´t start scoring goals next game it is against Portugal! let them suffer like 5 or 6 goals to get on the lead in the GS stats... this Death Group will probably end in

Brasil:9
Portugal:4
Ivory Cost:4
North Korea:0

hehe

if that happens the 2nd place will be decided between the team that has the most goals scored!!! so has i said before North Korea "needs" to lose for 5 or 6 for us (Portuguese ppl) ^^
