I'm Irish and I respect my flag to the death. Not literally the flag but what it stands for. I don't let it touch the ground, i fold it properly and all that. A country's flag is a powerful symbol that can stir up STRONG emotions.
I'm half Irish, though I have never been to Ireland, I feel that the Irish flag probably stands for a fight for freedom and strength of character and will, considering the history of Ireland.

I'm an O'Brian.(Sometime a few generations ago, my family for whatever reason changed the the "e" to an "a". I've been told it is probably because that is the way they started pronouncing it because of where they now live here in the US. I constantly have to correct people when they are writing it down.) My Non-Irish grandma loves to do genealogical research, and she found out my family is descended from one of the old kings of Ireland.

If I only get to go to one place outside the US, in my lifetime, it will have to be Ireland. I think it is a kind of draw that being Irish has, we have to go back to the homeland. I came to this conclusion after I had spoken to many other people where I am at, that have mostly Irish in them.

Now, I am also half German, but I really don't feel any draw to go to Germany.

Our flag is red, which I like, but it has a cross on it, which I dislike. Addtionally Denmark is a monarchy, and due to my republican and socialist beliefs, along with my atheism, I feel more respect for the tricolore than the Danish flag.

Silly story behind it too. Some knights known for wrapping their flags around artillery shells were fighting us in Estonia (we were there for booze and wenches). According to myth noted by a catholic the flag "fell down from heaven" and inspired us to win Estonia.

For whatever reason he chose to leave out the rational explaination.
Do you have something against crosses? a lot of flags (most of the northern european ones at least) have crosses but it's not like they say that the country is full of religious extremists. besides, the danish flag is the oldest state flag in the world and therefore my personal favorite.

btw as a side note, I like the fact that Sweden is a "monarchy" and I believe that our status in the world would diminish severely if we lost our "monarchs".

Hmm i'm not going to diss your grandma but that's a big claim to make. We can't even find out records about our ancestors only 10 generations ago coz of the events of War of Independence and Civil War! But who am i to say your grandma didn't find that out :) Make sure you come to Eire my friend, it's an experience to say the least ;D

As a U.S. citizen, I've become rather pessimistic about what my country has come to represent in recent years--quagmire wars, economic suicide, political partisanship which has produced enough diehard idiots on both sides to ignite a second Civil War (no, really, I mean it--I'll be shocked if it doesn't happen within the next two decades), etc. etc. etc. As a result, I choose to respect my flag for the country and ideals it once stood for, in the hopes for better days to come.

Yes and no.
I respect it because I love my country with a passion and would hate to see it destroyed. However the George Cross on the corner represents oppresion by another nation rather than pride.

I have great respect for the Canadian flag. My dad even put one up on the lamp post in the center of our cul-de-sac, though the elements got the better of it and one of the red sections got completly torn off (Immortalized in google's street veiw of my street) and he never bothered to replace it till one of the neighbours finally did it around Canada day of last year.

I respect the American flag greatly, no matter how insane the folks in Washington get and how many wars we are in, I can always look to the American flag to remind me what The United States stands for and the wishes of those who founded my Nation...

The Canadian flag, as much as I don't want to be spoiled by blind patriotism, I just love it. It stands to represent everything Canada does.

It's a yellow plus sign on a blue background.
It's just a flag.

Nationality means absolutely nothing to me.
Unless you're from Norway, in which case I'm forced to make fun of you.

Well to tell the truth, my grandma is pretty nuts. She's on my German side of the family, and she lived in Germany when she was little girl and goes on trips there at least once a year. She is very stuck up. She thinks that everybody in Germany is well-mannered and eats meals at the exact same time every day, and don't party all night or do anything that would disturb the perfect peaceful order of life. Obviously, she has her head in the clouds.

But on the genealogical stuff, she probably did very loose research and probably just assumed my family was related to the Irish king Brian Boru. She likes people to think that she is important and that people in her family are important. I cracked up laughing when she said that on my Irish side of the family, we were related to the old west outlaw train robber Jesse James.

Nope. I have nothing against my country, I'm equally apathtic towards them all, just can't get my head around pride in a flag.

Plus, more importantly, it's boring as hell, I mean really, white background/red cross, woohoo! The Republic of Kiribati have a vaguely cool one though, slightly jealous.

I respect it, I have some nationalistic liking to it.. but I don't feel compulsion to keep one, nor "love" it. And yes, I am Canadian.

We are so in love with the flag because is the thing that symbolizes what we have accomplished. It may seem like just a flag, but it is like a religion to us. It wont be sacred to the outsiders but to the believers its more important then anything.I can't explain it but its like your thing you would die for or live for. The burning of the flag isn't offensive. The fact that it is being burned to anger us is, and we would not think of burning it as anything else. Its like rubbing your ass against a picture of a great leader or something its still meaningful. its like the word that means more then just one thing, a very powerful word.
think of the flag to us kind of like our symbol of America...

[small]fuck yea![/small]

Hell no, why should I? My government gives me a reason to show respect I will. Until this day I have yet to see that.
American? Me too!
Unfortunately...
Yea it sux.... At least we have Obama now......
With the "..." I feel that you are probably joking. Because, if you really think things are better because Obama is in office, I will be putting my palm on my face.
Umm it is. At least he's a democrat. And he is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better that George Dubya who said Nuculer instead of Nuclear.
