I always swim eyes open, no goggles.

it just got more blurry as I got older.
at age 11 I had perfect vision underwater.

I grew up around nasty chlorine swimming pools. I spose its something you get used to, as I do remember the lingering burning sensation after i'd get home from swimming lessons as a kid. Salt water pools are less abrasive (the sensation I liken it too). Ocean water though, for me, is much worse than either of the two.

Eh, there's a some small corneal irritation, but otherwise it's alright. I do use goggles when I have the option, but without is fine, too.

I usually keep mine open but in some pool's the water has so much chlorine in I can't physically do it and I get the same pain as OP not to bad at first but then a hideous burning for the next hour or so.

I also don't both opening them if I swim in the sea. But I don't dive under as much in the sea as I always seem it drink a shit load of salt water.

I usually wear goggles, but if the water is unchlorinated, I can open my eyes. It's usually not a good idea with my contacts in though, because I usually don't bother taking them out when I go swimming, so I try to keep them closed if I don't have goggles.

I handle it fine until usually an hour after getting out of the pool when the chlorine really reacts in earnest.
Then...
the burning
oh god the burning burning ahhhhhhhhhhh

Yes, I can. I just liked being able to, so I kept doing it since being a little kid.

So can you handle keeping your eyes open under water? Why/why not?
Yes. It's blurry but it doesn't burn. Methinks it depends how much chlorine is in the pool.

I know a guy who swims so much that he can open his eyes and swim around in the sea without consequence. No idea how he manages that.

I still prefer goggles for visibility though.

I panic, my mind feels like all the water is going to rush into the holes between my eyelids and eyes and asplode my head. It's a childhood fear that I haven't been able to get over.

Depends, in a pool or ocean I can't, but in a lake I can. The chlorine and salt irritates my eyes, but the dirt in lake or river water is fine.

When I was young it didn't bother me, now I can't bear it.

But my eyes are wrecks anyway.

Not at all, I can't open them for more than about 2 seconds underwater. Goggles all the way!

It's never really bothered me, but I've only tried it in swimming pools, never the ocean or anything. I imagine that would sting.
