I don't use it because I'm trying to be a cop, and in the background investigation they check your facebook.

I don't use it.

The reason why is probably a mix between I can't be bothered setting it up, don't really have a huge need for it, worry over spending more of my limited free time on the pointlessness of it all and I think it's kind of lame. I just tend to use MSN/Skype when talking with friends online and phone them when I need to talk to them while they are away from the comp.

I mean I'm not hugely against it, I might still get it in the future (I get a lot of bugging from my friends to get one), it's just I don't care enough to get it now.

I don't use Facebook, Twitter, Myspace or any other insipid social networking site because they're cesspools full of the lowest common human denominators. If I wanted to read a bunch of tripe pumped out by illiterate whores with nothing better to do than update me on the sandwich they just ate or the nap they took yesterday I'd just join a forum and... oh, damn.

Either way, "social networking" is the most pretentious, shallow and stupid waste of time on the Internet. It's like StumbleUpon, but without the potential to be informative, useful or fun. It gets really old after the fourth time you write something personally relevant or insightful and get a "tl;dr," or no comments at all. Meanwhile, all 1,328 of your "friends" (most of whom are people you might say nine words in any given year) are posting "lol d00d, ur lief rly sux cuz u ca'nt half sex wit ur grrrrlfrnd ntil she turn's 1;8 lol."

If I had my way I'd tear the entire site down and subject its creators to a public caning. I'd consider that the least I could to do benefit society. I hate Facebook like I'd hate AIDS flavored soda. The only place on the Internet with less to offer humanity is 4chan, but there's plenty of overlap there, no doubt.

Either way, great thread, thank you. I haven't registered for a forum in nearly a year and I signed up solely to post in here. It's good to see that there are still a few marginally intelligent people out there somewhere.

I just don't really see a reason for Facebook. I have an account, and used to be fairly active, but the cons far outweighed the pros.
1. I got sick of people I never want to talk to again constantly contacting me. Odds are pretty good that if I want to maintain contact with someone from my past, I have. If I lost touch with someone, there's usually a pretty damned good reason for it.
2. I have a very small circle of friends, so if I have something worthwhile to say I'd rather talk to them in person. Or on the phone, or in an email, or basically in any format more personal than a "wall update."
3. Farmville updates. Period. And don't give me that "you can turn those off" crap; they make up the vast majority of some people's posts, so it's just as easy and efficient to unfriend them.
4. Facebook just seems to bring out the worst in people. I used to think Livejournal was bad, and then it was myspace, but the amounts of ignorance, willful stupidity, mangling of language, and airing of dirty laundry that make it onto facebook are unbearable.

It's pointless. Everyone I know uses it and talks about it. So if anything that happens on facebook I hear about it the next day.

This! This is another reason I hate Facebook. Even if you don't use it you can't avoid it. I can't count on two hands the number of times in a week I hear my wife or her family and friends say, "I heard about [X] on Facebook," or "I love the pictures you posted on Facebook." People look at me and ask if I have a Facebook and are shocked and confused when I say no, as if I'm the idiot in the conversation. You just cannot get the average Facebook user to shut the hell up about it.

I don't want your status updates, either online or in real life. Go somewhere else, kids.

Yeah, I've found it's just drawn a ton of people out from my past who seem to have forgotten they treated me like a plague ridden outsider at school and now want to 'friend' me, no doubt to pad their numbers and add me to their mafia wars or farmville team.

On top of that I've got around 400 unanswered messages all based on pokes and drinks and sheep thrown and other virtual gifts or game related invites.

I really can't care, it's not that I don't care, I actually can't.

I've also got at least a dozen people I actually know in my 'friend request' folder, but just feel kind of weird having my different social circles merging, who really wants friends of their mother and ex girlfriends having online connections?
