I once told a few people on a bus that you could catch a pokemon called Ibises in silver/gold version by going to the area where you catch natu/xatu and walking around until you find a trapdoor which leads down into a tunnel. If I recall correctly they believed me, I spose I must be very convincing, especially since I convinced my group of friends that another friend's religion was run by a 'wizard'.

Shoot EVERY credit at the end of SSBM and you can unlock Toad.

Not so much a cheat as an April Fools joke, I believed that Nintendo were releasing DLC for SSBB, Twilight Princess, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and there were a couple others. Someone made a fake site with a fake blog. I believed it for an hour.

In Halo 2 I was playing a game of Big Team CTF on Containment (the DLC snowy map with the huge bases). A guy on my team holding the game winning flag had brought it to our base and said "I must show you the secret of the flag!" and proceeded to place the flag in an inaccessible area. Flags didn't reset by the way, needless to say he received a bad review.
if it was inaccessible how did he get there?

Adding to the pokemon, I was always told that holding down B while attacking increases your chance for a critical hit.
The bad part is that it's become an uncontrolable thing that when I play pokemon I hold down the B button and dont realize I'm doing it >.<
I actually feel like it really does, and yeah my finger never leaves the B button during a battle.

That pressing B alot will let you catch the pokemon more easily when you throw the ball.
It's A+B+Down, you fool!

There are so many in Pokemon. All the unexplained myths and legends and unavailable Pokemon in the later games don't do anything to help this.
I think Pokemon has so many of these because it has a young fanbase, and the internet was not a viable tool to receive confirmation of rumors back in the old days.
This. Except, I think I was told to hold down B and keep tapping A. I thought it worked too, because it seemed like the little Pokemon were hopelessly trapped by my uncontrollable gaming cheats, but it was just my mind playing tricks on me.

Well, after seeing how easy the game is with it. I know it is the only way to get darkrai and cressela (I think), but you can steal other pokemon, get full on all Item, 1-hit KOs, etc.
Actually, Cresselia can be found without any special circumstances, you just go to the port town (west-most city) and talk to either the guy at the boat to iron island or someone inside the house right next to the boat. Unfortunately, Cresselia is one of those obnoxious pokemon that run around the worldmap like total dicks.

i really prestiges gaming magazine, like the nintendo one from back in the day or something claimed that if you had a dragonite in pokemon blue and he had a certain amount of experience and you encountered a pokemon and lvled him in some crazy specific spot it would evolve into yoshi. Being a HUGE fan of yoshi i of course attempted it many times but apparently it was a april fools joke.

also just saying ive been looking for this article for a while and wouldnt mind someone pointing me in the right direction if for nothing else but to retrieve a bit of my childhood

I once heard a really well thought out lie from my friend David in secondary school for the first-gen pokemon games. I hold no grudge considering how damn informed it was. You know how in gold and silver Johto is to the west of kanto connected by the elite 4? Well david told me to go to the elite four entrance and cut a random tree. That tree would then reveal a secret passage to johto. I have to give him props for intelligence.

Also I hold A+B when capturing >.>

If you go to the top floor of the Dept. Store in Pokemon Blue/Red and talk to the woman behind the counter 100 times, she gives you a Mysterious Egg which will hatch after x steps into:

BTW, not a fake cheat but a real and funny glitch in Driver 1: I drove at a barrier between road and ocean so hard that I went over it... AND DROVE OVER THE OCEAN UNTIL THE MAP GLITCHED. I never managed to reproduce that collision glitch though... Also once in the same game I got hit by a tram so hard a ended up flying up into the air and lying upside down on a skyscraper :p I did this on free drive because I never got past that damn tutorial.

He didn't, he dropped the flag so that it would land there.

It's pretty amazing how so many of these myths were started by video game magazines, especially as April fools' jokes. Kids are gullible, they should know better!

I tried everything to resurrect Aeris, man. I put SO much time into it, testing so many theories that I read online. I wasted at least 300 hours of my life on that game. It enrages me to even think about it now.

Actually, There is an element of truth to this one.
My housemate and I found a couple of my old gameboys and my copies of Red and Yellow, we're still in the middle of a best of 99 battle series, but I digress...
I was fighting Moltres and couldn't put it to sleep or anything so I decided to give one of the old "cheats" a go.
Threw a pokéball and hit Down + A just as the throw animation started.... caught it first time!
Lucky? Possibly. I mean its all just code and random number generation at the end of the day.
But consider then I managed to do exactly the same thing (after a few tries) to not only Zapdos and Articuno, but Mewtwo aswell. (Even got a funny sound effect and a colour change of the ball for Zapdos, playing on the N64 Pokémon Stadium 1 GB tower)
No damage done to any of them, and I still have my master ball, all thanks to a few well timed button presses.... or is it....?
Bear in mind that this wasn't done years ago, or "When I was in school" or "my mate once did".
I am 21 and studying at uni to become a games programmer and this was done about 5 weeks ago, in front of a witness.

I fell afoul of the Zelda Ocarina of Time Triforce rumours when they first started up, causing me to delete all my saves and try ridiculous game runthroughs. Positive side is I got really good at the first three dungeons!

I'm sure there'll be stories of the Mario 64 "Luigi code" and the like.
Totally fell for it too! Spent a couple months on 56k internet trying to read about if someone finally figured out how to get that damn gold triangle.
