Since I am a horror movie fan I try and find good foreign horror movies (since American Horror films are crap).

Some good one's I've seen recently.

Martyers - one of the most distrubing movies I've ever seen. Seriously, don't watch this unless you have a strong stomach.

A Tale of Two Sisters - good Korean Horror film.

Oldboy - not horror exactly, but good suspense.

I've been wanting to see Wristcutters, it sounds nutty.
If you want to see some brilliant Waits cameos (and supporting parts) check out:
The Fisher King (I'm also a big Gilliam fan. Waits is in his new movie coming out: The Imaginarium)
Domino
Bram Stokers Dracula
Coffee and Cigarettes (a great conversation between him and Iggy Pop)
Mystery Men (Tom's the best part of that movie)
Tom Waits and Terry Gilliam sounds like a great combo. I'll look that one up!
I actually own Domino, but I don't remember him in it. I will have to watch it again and look closer. Who does he play?
Dracula is always good times, adding that to my list.
Tom Waits and Iggy Pop together! I think you just made all my dreams come true.
Again, I haven't seen Mystery Men for a long time. I think the last time I watched it was about a year after it came out so I'll watch that one again.

Uh... Mirrormask? Or Das Boot, if that counts as obscure, it's probably extremely popular. At least it should be.
Das Boot is a great movie! Don't know if it's popular or not though.

Killing Zelda Sparks. Weird. And fairly obscure.

Big Fish, Grindhouse, and Fight Club. Some of these aren't too obscure but not a single person I know has seen or heard of these, so I'm counting them.

The princess Bride. A classic comedy, completely lost on everyone i know.
One of the best movies ever made. The sword fight is the best scene of the movie.

Ladyhawke. Matthew Broderick was like....19 in that movie.

Also, Waking Life, directed by Richard Linklater.

Also, "What the BLEEP do we know?" - yes that is the real title. Funny story about that movie. I found it in a small disc sleeve in my room one day - never bought it, never even heard of it. None of my friends or relatives or anyone who had been in my room within the last month recalled putting it there. Its origins remain a mystery to this day.

So far this thread is mostly well known films, or indie films with a still strong following. I can think of only three movies that could qualify as "obscure" and everyone should see for one reason or another.
1) Hard Candy
2) Requiem for a Dream
3) Elephant

Look them up, watch them. I don't demand you understand them, but they are profound.
Hard Candy was ASTOUNDING.

"Dodgeball" or "Cabin Fever".

Mine is "Shaun of the Dead" and "The Fifth Element".
None of those are oscure. Seriously.

My favourite obscure movies are:
  • The Butterfly Effect - I've only met 2 people who've heard of it.
    Zombie Strippers
butterfly effect pretty famous and awful
and zombie strippers rock

eXistenZ
naked lunch
gattica
the company man/cypher (us/uk titles)
brotherhood of the wolf

You wont be disappointed by Tom and Iggy. It's hilarious... Iggy gets so... I don't want to ruin it for you.

If you like Down by Law (another Jarmush film with Roberto Benini and Tom Waits) also see the episode of Fishing with John when John Laurie (another actor in Down by Law) take Tom to Jamaica to go fishing.

The Fisher King is one of Gilliam's bigger movies; it has Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges. Tom has a great cameo as a homeless vet in Grand Central.

In Domino he has a really small cameo as the weird preacher who finds them recuperating in the desert. He's the one that tells them about the sick kid: he's heralded in with a song of his.

He plays Renfield in Dracula and takes the character beyond the psychotically mad caricature he's usually portrayed as.
And in Mystery Men he plays the scientist who make the non-lethal weapons for the heroes.

Sorry to everyone else for gushing about Tom Waits adnauseum but he is my favorite performer (musician/actor) of all time. I only wish Big Time were still available.

Hmm. My first post XD. My favourite obscure film will have to be Sgt. Bilko. I don't know how many people know it, but I loved it! So funny.

Maybe Core as well, but that's less obscure (I think).
Core was awesome - seen it twice.

Manos: The Hands of Fate. also the worst movie ever made, hands down. what's funny is that i learned not too long ago the director was so convinced it would become a cult classic that when the very actors that were in it left the movie because it was so bad, he tried to hang himself. also, at the first showing, the actors were all delivered by the same limo; they all stood at the back of the building and the limo circled the building, picking them up and dropping them off one at a time.
