Mass Effect 2 easily. Do not get me wrong. I love the FF series and would get that too when you get the money. However... Motomu Toriyama is a talentless **** who squirted out FF X-2: Yunas Dance Beat. So since he is lead director of FFXIII I expect it to be pretty but not have much else.
That bastard is the Uwe Boll/Michael Bay of SquareEnix.

And yes, for all the sad, pathetic weirdos out there. Tali is now romancable. BIG JOLLY! Hopefully I can shoot the ***** in the face or even better, let Blinky do it.
Do we get to make sweet, sweet alien love to her?
Not really, she just uses those CREEPY, CREEPY FEET of hers to give you a footjob.
WHHAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!

Whats next? In Mass 3 Shep cures the Genophage by injecting Wrex's DNA into his nuts and banging the Krogan Queen producing a new species that is immune?
Seriously, this just stinks of pandering to the fans.
I agree. BioWare obviusly never intended for her to be romantic interest in the first game, but becuase fans demanded it (for reasons beyond me) she is one now. Same with Garrus. I mean come on. Inter-species romance is just....wrong.

Do we have to have sex with every alien we encounter now? Can't we just be friends with video game characters instead of fucking them?

It's kind of hard to say because they are both such completely different games. You really can't compare them directly. It really just depends on if you prefer the WRPG model, or the JRPG model.
In other words, it depends on whether you prefer a little innovation now and again, or the same RPG you've been playing since the days of NES. I mean, what would you consider the standard for the "WRPG model" to be, exactly? Baldur's Gate? Mass Effect? The Fallout series? They are all pretty unique unto themselves. But I guess Final Fantasy 13 doesn't have any game which is similar to it. Oh wait, I forgot about the 12 games that came before it...
There's also the fact that, of these two RPGs, only ME2 has actual role-playing in it. So, you know, that helps its case a bit.
Well, you do play a role in Final Fantasy 13. It's just a role you're forced into with no possibility of customization for further immersion. So if you really want to be able to get into it, you better be one of those people wondering what it's like to be a pre-pubescent girl. Here's a primer to help you ease into the role: you love the Jonas Brothers and Twilight.
...Have you ever read a book in your life? Or seen a film? Are you seriously so shallow that you need a dress-up doll without a personality in order to be immersed?
HEY-HEY-HEY guys! Time the fuck out here! Let's not turn this into a ME2 Versus FFXIII debate! The two games are fantastic in their own right, and FFXIII has a great cast of characters (just like ME2) that can keep all of our interest for those long yet enjoyable hours.

...Are you actually implying that every turn-based system is the same?

Because that would make you an idiot.

As for FF12, it was a slew of neat ideas, each one of them with a crippling flaw in their implementation.
Don't bother even trying to argue with him brother. Some idiots just see the name "Final Fantasy" and assume they are all exactly the same, then within 10 seconds of opening their mouths they prove they know jack shit about the series beyond it having turn based combat and pretty men.
QFT. lordlee, take my advice to the OP and ignore the biased idiots.

Wow. Hostile much?

What I meant was that across WRPG's there are some common elements that make them attractive to some people, and the same is true for JRPGs.

WRPGs are generally much heavier on the role-playing elements. Often they allow for much more detailed character customization and the ability to make the story what you want it to be, as opposed to having a rigid story told to you.

JRPGs are generally the opposite, being much more reliant on telling a specific story with specific characters. They also usually have a turn based combat system that relies more heavily slow strategic thinking and item management.

I really don't understand why you where so offended by my comments. If anything, I would think you would be happy that I was separating JRPGs, that you apparently hate so much, from your precious WRPGs.

How many JRPG's have you played exactly? Ever played Golden Sun, Xenosaga, Dragon Quest, or Crono Trigger? Not to mention the fact that every Final Fantasy is actually quite different. If you actually played a few, you would know that.

I personally love both WRPGs and JRPGs. They both have different aspect that appeal to me for different reasons. If you don't like JRPGs that's fine, but there is no reason to attack someone for thinking otherwise.

Mass Effect 2.

Were this any other situation I'd put my vote in for Square's game, much preferring their settings, if not their characterization and storytelling style. Not this time. I know what Final Fantasy XIII plays like. It's bad. Very, very bad. Basically: you go through a linear environment, fight semi-random battles, watch a cutscene, rinse, and repeat. You don't explore because there isn't anything to explore. You don't do sidequests because there aren't any. You don't interact with NPCs in any meaningful fashion, either; not even to purchase items. Instead, you buy 'em at save points.

It sounds like a sick joke (actually one of Yahtzee's sick jokes, which is depressing all by itself), but I absolutely assure you that it isn't. Please, if you have to buy one of these games, go with Mass Effect 2. Bioware's trying to improve the base systems and the quality of the overall product, and it's going to be a lot more stimulating. FFXIII doesn't even have most of the things that would make a JRPG enjoyable, and I predict it will disappoint.

THANK YOU. On any other day this is what I'd be saying!

You are very convincing, and that is gay the whole no side quests and no exploring thing not to mention buying stuff from save points.

FF13 if you don't mind a linear game, Mass Effect 2 if you like Tali.
I do like tali, and hopefully I will finally get to see what she looks like.
Please tell me why?(you don't see her face behind the gimp suit)
Ooh-ooh, I got this one! The reason is because of her hips and her bright-eyed and bushy-tailed twenty-something year old personality. Lol, and did I mention those FUCKING HIPS?! ...Sorry...

Yeah, about Final Fantasy? I've been playing the games for ages, I'm sure I'll get XIII, but lately I've come to the conclusion that they're not really role-playing games. You play no part in the creation of the characters, you have no control over their non-combat-related actions, you have no influence whatsoever on the story--you're just there to manage the party's inventory, to give them suggestions as to how to win fights, and to steer them from one non-interactive cutscene to the next. The only role you play is that of the heroes' invisible, voiceless caddy.

Just as an example: remember that part in FF8 when Quistis saw absolutely nothing wrong with abandoning her post in the middle of a high-profile political assassination to go make nice with Rinoa? If that was a role-playing game, you might have had the ability to stop her from doing something so mindbendingly stupid. But nope, the game forced you to march her all the way back to the mansion, get trapped, and fight through a sewer level instead; you had no choice in the matter. This is the kind of stuff I'm talking about.
