We all know about Final Fantasy and its IMO overrated 7th game but I have to ask why exactly do/did people like that game. I just wanted to ask because I'm not a big fan of the game (but I don't hate it) and whenever I point out a flaw some one gets on my case about it. I know these people are just annoying @$$ fanboys/girls but there are people who aren't delusional that enjoy these games and I'd like to know why.
They're good
Could you elaborate a bit.
You build a team of superhero teenagers with super-powers and swords; beding the elements to your will and control the fate of millions
How can this not be fun?

Why was FF (and 7 in paticular) so well-loved? Try to imagine it in context of the time it came out. The storyline, characterisation, hell, the entire setting itself was much stronger and better realised than in 99% of what was one the market at the time. I dunno about the rest of you, but it was the first game that showed me how a game is a viable story telling medium (granted, not the best of stories, but heck, I was like 10 at the time).

I think FFVII had the finest combat system known to man. Complex, unforgiving and murderous, unless you changed it to proper turn-based.

Oh, and FFX-2 had the second finest, as it combined the nice points of VII's combat with some more elegant special manueveres.

Eh... I just don't CARE about FF anymore. Yeah, I liked FF6 (and especially loved how it was ported to the GBA so poor people like me could buy a copy), but I never really enjoyed the others. Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSX is my second-favorite game of all time, but I'm not sure I can really consider it an FF game. A lot of the game was made by the Vagrant Story/Tactics Ogre team, and it shows.

Go ahead and like it or hate it, just don't act like I should care. I mean, shouldn't the series END at some point?!?

Right now my attitude towards FF is the same as my attitude towards the new Sonic games. There MAY someday be another good FF, but I'm not holding my breath. If Square couldn't make FF12 fun (a game that took a lot of inspiration from Tactics, Vagrant Story and FFT:A) I doubt any of their neo-industrial crap is going to wow me.

Oh, and Dune is just flat-out brilliant. It inspired a number of deep and complex movie and game storylines, including Xenogears and Star Wars, to name a few. Like LotR, it was an incredibly iconic and visionary work that continues to influence SF to this day. In fact, I'd bet that in ANY SF video game with any kind of story, there will be at least one Dune reference somewhere in there... Unless that game is busy ripping off Star Wars or Aliens.

I agree, though not that the most recent games have. I think that it has something to do with the fact that they were some of the first games to be really compelling or at least try to be. If you wanted an emotional, story experience with interesting characters that was one of the few places you could find it. But the more of them I play the more similar they get, I know a lot of people want to crucify X but I loved it and I liked that they at least tried something sort of new, and that the male lead or the lead isn't the one who will ultimately save the world or at least isn't destined to do so.

I... compeletly agree.

JRPGS arn't fun to me especialy FF, the combat seems stupid to me.

Player: "Oi! i'm gonna run over there hit you and run back agian wait a few minutes then run back over there and hit you agian!"

Monster: "Oh no! i better use some super mega move to hurt your whole party!"

Player: "Other party member cast cure and throw potions, i'm gonna run back over there and hit him agian!"

thats how it plays off in my head

It's one of those games where combat should not be taken super seriously. The emphasis is more on story and it appeals to people who are more into the D&D scene. Thats why many people probably don't like RPG's like that because they are not patient enough for the combat and take it with more than a grain of salt. I can certainly understand why in this age people may find TBC to be rather dated, but back in the ol'days the hardware limitations kept it from being much else.

I really never saw the problem in it, the comments saying "its stupid" and "silly" seem rather silly to me. It's more layed back than balls to walll.

Zalest^ what RPGs have YOU played recently, cause I'm damn sure I wasn't doing that in the .Hack games, Dark Cloud games, Kingdom Hearts games, Final Fantasy 12.

I'm going to say it right now.

Drop the mother FUCKING idea that all JRPG's have turn based combat, cause it pisses me RIGHT THE FUCK OFF. If you don't know shit, don't open your fucking mouth, it's my motto, you can have an opinion, you just can't have a stupid one. your allowed to say 'I don't like JRPGs' but your not allowed to act like you know shit if ya don't.

again, I. Do. Not. Care. If. You. Don't. Like. Them. so. Long. As. You. Don't. Talk. About. Shit. You. Don't. Fucking. Know.

and you can replace JRPG with another Genre or game series, and my stance is the same, don't talk about shit ya don't know cause then you sound like the guys who say

"Oh well I haven't played that game but this game kicks it's ass"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4Vv-wm-s1s Dark Cloud
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TqmTNoin3Q .Hack//G.U. watch it in High Quality
You can search for the rest.
The upcoming FFXIII/Versus as well as White Knight Chronicles are also doing non-turn based combat.

I'm sorry i'm coming off as an ass, i'm just REALLY pissed at comments like that
Ahem, clearly you are taking that as a insult to your beloved JRPGs, i just simply do not enjoy them mostly because the story are rather dull IMO and the game play isn't all that great IMO. did i say In my opinion? Yes you are coming off as a ass by the way... I did not say all JRPGs are turn based.. I know better then that but the topic in general is final fantasty which is turn based and is what i was talking about. Their are few JRPG that are not turn based and i might enjoy them if i took the time out of my day to play them but i don't because i have low expectations for them to be good games and like to play my western rpgs over and over like some kind of foaming cave rat.

To me it's still a child that has been sitting stagnant, it's finaly starting to grow, unlike Mario or Zelda, you CAN'T say it's retreading old ground cause it's a new story each time with new characters.

Final Fantasy is simply a name, you could give them all new names and nobody would say anything.

Lets say FF 2 through XII were named different things, people wouldn't be saying, 'Square should stop making RPGs' If you get what I'm saying, there not REALLY a series. in the way Zelda and Mario are.

after all say they stop using the FF name, what stops them from making more RPG's that just don't have the name Final Fantasy?

Also Samurai I wanna know (In PM not here) what you didn't like about XII, not so I can try to convince you otherwise, I just wanna know, cause I loved it, and I like to know others opinions.
I've recently been starting to hate Square lately with regard to their other, non-FF works. I'd have to look up a list or something on Wiki, but I'm pretty sure I haven't enjoyed ANY Square game in a long time. So yes, I WOULD have a problem with Square releasing bad games as non-FF titles, it's just extra-annoying when a bad Square game gets released with the name "Final Fantasy," because you know that people will still flock to it.

And yeah, I didn't think FF12 was good, but it was a lot less offensively-bad than the titles that came before it. I'll send a short list. I didn't play it that much, but I observed my sister putting maybe 50+ hours into it before selling it out of frustration, so I'll go with what I saw and heard.

No offense to western RPGs they don't allways make the most sense themselves, after all, dying cause a rat nibbled on your little toe? (Over exaggerated example, although it CAN happen)

Why is every Bee and Bird out to get you even if they can't see you (Okay that's a **** up on RPG's all together, but catch my drift?)

Look I love both, I invested plenty of hours into Morrowind, and Neverwinter Nights.

And yeah I do take back sounding like an ass, to be honest can you blame me, I have to hear a lot of shit, this time was unlucky enough to be the breaking point.
Perfectly understandable, I personaly don't try and bash other peoples game. everyone has their reasons for enjoy them and to each his own. I'd be at a breaking point too but i don't take what anyone says seriously :D
