Final Fantasy Characters: Best And Worst

I did this in another topic. Here's quick list, one from each game.

Favourite:

1: Fighter. They're just cans full of awesome
2: Guy, because he's Guy. Or Maria, because she doesn't wear pants.
3: The third onion kid. You have to wonder how he's related to the others.
4: Rydia. "Stop touching my butt!"
5: Bartz. No reason, really.
6: Edgar. He's a pimp.
7: Cid. I don't need to explain myself here.
8: Squall. I can empathize with him, really.
9: Vivi. If you say otherwise, you are wrong.
10: Rikku. Yeah, I had a crush on her
10-2: The off button on my PS2
11: Durpa doo.
12: Balthier is badass
13: Have yet to play this.

Least favourite:

1: Thief. They are entirely useless, unless you really want to use the Katana
2: Leonheart, because he does nothing all game.
3: The fourth onion kid, because he's a clone of the first
4: I would say Telah, but the spoony bard line trumps anything, so we're going to go with Rosa, the dumb bint.
5: Cara/Kara/Krile/whatever it is this week. Her grandfather is so much cooler.
6: Gogo. Lacking a back story really sucks.
7: Cait Sith. No explanation necessary.
8: Zell. He needs to shut the hell up. All the time.
9: Eiko. You are too young to have hormones, missy.
10: Kimarhi. Only character I've never really used.
10-2: Myself, for playing this game.
11: Cherry jam.
12: Everyone not named Balthier (and maybe Basch)
13: See above.

In these sort of threads I've always got to go with Laguna Loire for best character. He's a great contrast to Squall, especially early game. He's very endearing and personable, especially when you see a lot of characters in video games that seem to be bred as "characters" and not as people.

I like Squall for the development he goes through throughout his game. He becomes a pretty well rounded person at the end! Zidane is a good guy, he's just not interesting enough to be a main character, which was one of my big problems with FFIX. I haven't beaten the game yet but I'm pretty fond of Snow Villiers and Vanille in FFXIII.

As for villains I think Kuja is one of the most complete villains in the series, whether I like him or not. Sephiroth and Kefka are both pretty much done to death.

As for worst characters I'll keep it short and go with Cloud from VII. He went nowhere fast. Vaan loses a lot of points for having nothing to do with his game. There are a slew of characters who are very two dimensional so I tend to not hate them so much as I just pay them no mind.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot about Tidus. I disliked Tidus so much that I laughed when he didn't exist.

I don't know why every one rags on vaan, wait a minute, *memories of FFXll: revenant wings suddenly return* What was I saying! I must have gone temporarily insane. Also from that game: All the new characters had no emotions! yeah they used plot to fill in that hole, but come on!
Best: auron (somewhat vivi, but I've only seen him in KH2 so I wouldn't know)plus most of the cast of FF1 for reasons unrelated to the game (for why go to here: http://www.nuklearpower.com/2001/03/02/episode-001-were-going-where/ )

I can't really decide between Kuja and Sephiroth, seeing as how one destroyed a whole plane of existence and the other circumvented the Phoenix Down, as the best villain.

My favorite protagonist is Auron, though. I mean, he was an unsent. That's awesome.

As for least favorite: Basically anyone in FFX/FFX-2 aside from Seymour Guado.

EDIT: I forgot how much I liked the Blue Mage.

I'd like to think Sephiroth didn't stop the Phoenix down as much as Cloud was just too stupid to live.

worst Villian-Sin from FFX because it's just a thing with no real motivation...

Not really, and he wasn't even really the villain.

Sin was actual the result of the last ditch effort by Yu Yevon to defeat his enemies and pretty much unite Spira. He created it to go on a rampage, destroying his enemies "because they used machina." Then he developed a way to temporarily defeat it, so the people would come to depend on him for when it returned. He ended up manipulating the entire world through the beast, creating a religion that would use people's fear to manipulate them. As the cycle repeated itself, more people came to need the church, meaning that Yu Yevon had effectively made it so that the more it went on, the more the people were controlled. Also, we learn that machina could actually be used to defeat sin, but because it came so unexpectedly, and due to the people's perpetual fear afterwards, no one wanted to use it. However, what makes it such a great monster is that to defeat it, two people must die, and they know it. The Summoner and whoever they pick, and by that time, most likely the Guardian will have become their best friend. And even then, that person then gets to be trapped as Sin, forced to be the thing they spent their journey trying to stop. I'd say it's one of the sadder of the "villains" in the FF world

Hm... Best is easy for me. Zalbag from Final Fantasy Tactics is my #1 choice. His moral code is understandable and he doesn't trust Ramza's accusations of Dycedarg because they seem rash and unfounded. All of his actions are determined by his own reasoning and morals. He's also a kickass knight and has one of the best designs in the game.

I'll give some honorable mentions too, I guess. I liked a lot of the cast of VI, but I suppose that Locke was always my favorite. Sabin, Edgar and Celes were also pretty good. I also liked a good deal of IX's cast, Zidane, Garnet, Quina and Steiner being my favorites. In VII I liked the Turks, Rufus and Red XIII. If I may use Dissidia as well I also really liked Garland, Firion and Golbez. My memories of all the earlier games are a little disjointed so I can't really mention them.

As for least favorite, that's tough since I hate a LOT of Final Fantasy characters. I hated Squall when I played the first disc of VII, I hated Yuffie, I hated Gau. But it's the two PS2 games that really got me. Final Fantasy X had a terrible cast. Auron was built up WAY too much to be a badass, but offered NO useful information until it was past it's point of importance and claimed his reasons for not telling you to be 'because it's your adventure'. Every other character was a ball of annoyance and terrible dialogue. Final Fantasy XII had another bad cast, with Balthier having all the personality and everyone else either being flat or very annoying. I like Gabranth well enough, though. After some deliberation, by which I mean very little deliberation, I announce my least favorite as:
Wakka, he being obnoxious in behaviour coupled with a bad voice actor. He was racist, naive, and stubborn in both respects. He said 'ya?' the way most people use a period and takes the cake for one of the worst designed characters I've ever seen. Tetsuya Nomura has improved, I'd say, but Wakka is easily the stupidest and worst character he has ever designed. Easily.

Anyways, I feel that even his brother (who gets killed 10 minutes in) would be a better main character (hell even the prince, who get's killed 5 minutes in, would work better. Have him forget who he is and be horribly disfigured or something).

This is one of those times where the sidekick is infinitely cooler than the hero.

Kain really needs Cecil to tank the hits for him though. He's got much lower durability.

Favorite?... Hm... I probably would've liked Edge a lot more had they expanded on him. I'd say Red XIII. The whole thing with his father simply makes that character.

Least favorite would have to be Edward/Vaan. The only FF characters I truly hate with a passion. Other than maybe Yuffie.

Baltheir is an extremely sexy man, that just wins it for me. (FFXII)

I think Vaan from the same game wins worst, he looks like a girl, and fights most unlike a main character in any other FF game. Terribly.

Sigh, this reminds me of how awesome FF games used to be. I love them right up to X-2 (yup, X-2 was awesome) and XII and XIII were dreadful. I went into XIII loving it and hated it as it went on; with every hour I liked it less
Aaaaaanyway on topic I agree with OP, Zidane is the most likeable FF character ever and probably my all-time favourite protagonist. I also loved Barret, Zell, Vivi and Auron. And for the bad guy my hat goes off to Sephiroth
Most hated would be anyone from XII who isn't Balthier (was that his name?) and Hope. For the love of Zues, shut the fuck up, Hope!!!

Gilgamesh was prob my most memorable WTF moments in gaming, then I found out it was John Di Maggio (aka Bender) that voiced him and my brain exploded.

OT: I would prob say my top 3 (as lets face it, we all have more than one favourite FF character) would be Yuffie (her 4xcut attack and mug was awesome) Red xiii, although is backstory was alittle weird, though prob reading into the human grampa thing abit to much...maybe we thought he was getting a nice kitten as a pet to keep him company in his old age, which grew up to be a tiger than attacks up with pins,clips and combs rather than his fucking teeth... and good old clod *ironic mis-spelling intended*

Worst for me would be Quina, Cait Sith, Kimahri

Yeah, I see what you mean. Kimahri could have been a worthwhile character, if they didn't butcher the concept by giving him absolutely NO section of the Sphere Grid to call his own. Sure he can become a "copycat" of one or more of the other characters, but then if I want to use those abilities, I would just use the character him/herself

Quistis from FFVIII was an alright Blue Mage, probably because it only came up as her limit so it didn't cripple her. And it did include an one-hit-KO kill move, that worked on almost any regular monster (while still giving experience), so her limit wasn't completely worthless...

 

[Forever of the Stars]

The best character was the black mage in FFI closely followed by the fighter. As for characters with acutal personalities I really like Balthier from XII and despite the fact that I do not like the game I think that Barrett definitely deserves some mention. Also Galuf from V Galuf is awesome. As for worst, gotta say Tidus, Rikku, Paine, Cloud, Tifa, All of the characters from II every single fucking one of them) except for Minwu he should be up near the top he's pretty awesome, I'm not a huge fan of Cecil either also Wakka if I haven't mentioned him yet. Also most of the characters from VI hell most things about VI pissed me off, I don't know why it just did.

hmm...my favorite hero, is either zidane from ffix, i also like lightning hope and snow from the newest ffxiii, its hard to decide which one i like the most out of them

favorite villian: honestly i just think the judges from xii are just super badass..litle cliche bnut just fuckin badasss

sephiroth is over done, as people constantly try to rag on about, but honestly i get freakin goosebumps about the guy unlike any other villian in ff

shitty villians: kefka sure did alot, but there is no way i would be afraid of that fucking clown, i honestly take him as a joke, despite what he has done
