Not really stealth, but when tactics are required in Bad Company 2 online, I'd often run in guns blazing and somehow come out alive.

I remember one great stealth cock-up moment from the original Halo. Although it was more of an intentional screwing over of a buddy than a mistake.

In the "Attack on the Control Room" chapter, after the large prortion of the level that has you driving a Scorpion Tank and various other vehicles, you enter a room full of sleeping grunts with two patroling Elites. If you were careful, you could sneak through the room, melee killing all the Grunts without ever firing a shot. Sneak behind the Elites while they patrol and melee smack them and the Grunts will only awaken if shots are fired. We did this any time we played the level and so it was second nature to go in silent.

Anyway, playing co-op with my friend I suggested that he go take down the Elites while I mopped up the Grunts. I waited for him to carefully get close to the first Elite and then I fired one quick blast at the ground to change the level from Stealthy Covenant slaughter to "HOLY SHIT THERE'S A HUNDRED ENEMIES SHOOTING ME!" and then promptly ran out the door to leave him to his fate.

Good times.

Pretty much sums up the majority of my Splinter Cell Conviction experience.

I think your game is a little dodgy when running around with a shotgun on the hardest difficulty is a viable strategy in a stealth game.

Hitman series all the way. Sometimes the guns blazing method is always the best.
I have to agree here, I busted my balls for ages on the Hitman 2 demo trying to do it stealthy the whole way. What do I get for my trouble? The minute you're in the mansion you have about 5 seconds before all pretense of innocence is lost (and if you choose to drug the postie instead of killing him you barely even get past the front gate before the bastard wakes up and alerts the guards). Eventually I just charged in through a side-door with a silenced pistol. Less mess, less fuss and about half an hour less waiting around. Total disappointment on the steath front.

EDIT: There's also a sniper rifle in the garage right next to the side-door, so you can duck in and out in no time.

Aside from that, the final couple of levels of Thief. There's this big-ass portal and every few seconds a new monster comes out of it. I think the stealthy part's over folks. CHAAARGE!

I had that moment literally in No One Lives Forever 2. I played that game for the first time (on Hard) and immediately tried to do a perfect stealth game. But after so many asinine guards I just went "well fuck this" and killed them all with the AK74 I never bothered using before. It was...satisfying.

in the first tenchu game, the second mission you go through this town as a ninja. but like every 3rd roof has an enemy on it, and every second street is patroled. The first time i played that mission, i got seen like 2 seconds in, and then ran away up onto a roof, into another enemy. I ran until i had like 12 guys chasing me when i finally gave up, turned around, and just started chucking grenades.

Assassins creed kind of forced you to forgoe stealth in som instances, and I was always disappointed, but relatively indifferent since the combat works for me too.

I don't play many other stealth series, but i do have a thing for cover based shooters to which I apply the question: Yes i get bored with taking cover all the time and just jump out 'peekaboo' style and shoot anything that looks vaguely like it might not be a rock or a chest-high-wall.

Farcry 2. It was possible to play stealthy, but it took ages. A lot of the time I thought "fuck it" and proceeded to throw grenades and molotovs everywhere, raping faces in the process with a shotgun.
I tried stealth for that game. Once. After one silenced sniper shot, a jeep sped towards me and I just said "You know what? Fuck these guys!" and proceeded to kill everyone with an AK.

in STALKER Call of Pripyat, I tried to be super sneaky in the Merc camp in Zaton, sniping the mercs on the ledges. Unfortunatly one of them was alerted and this put the whole base on alert.
From there on out it became a sniping/grenadespam combo. Loved the A.I though.

Occasionally in Batman Arkham Asylum when I got the upgraded batclaw.

Every single stealth game that allows you to go Rambo without telling you you're an idiot and restarting you to the last checkpoint.

Uncharted 2, stealth was a sort of extra feature to the game, though.

I like to be stealthy when it isn't required (and I'm not timed). However, there are times where being forced to be stealthy in an otherwise NOT stealth-based game just feels annoying and contrived. Case in point, Syphon Filter when you have to tail the guy in the museum and you have to go through all this BS and I lost count of how many times I had to redo the first part of the mission to the point that I seriously wished I could just go cap everyone in sight and just threaten the guy to divulge everything...

I was playing the new Splinter Cell with my friend at his house, in Co-op, and I don't play stealth games all that much, so I was shocked when I was told that running into a room blasting a shotgun everywhere, screaming "BANZAI" at the TV, wasn't stealthy.

Probably all fps'. The hell with cover, i'm going in. Oh what, i'm dead. Well i'll sort that out. The hell with cover, i'm going in. Oh what, i'm dead... you can see where this goes.
Also, recently call of juarez: bound in blood. i'm just not using that dire bad covering system when i can just run in and throw knifes at people, nor am i going to circle them.
