I agree with just about everything named in this thread. Also the Monkey Island games, which may have been fairly popular back in the day but are essentially forgotten now.

I'm also not sure how mainstream the Heroes of Might and Magic games are, but since turn based strategy tends to be a pretty niche genre (hell, PC gaming is pretty niche) they probably qualify.

I'll also add the "Soul Blazer trilogy" on the SNES (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma), which are very good action RPGs that retro gamers now tend to love, but didn't get much attention when released.

I forgot Serious Sam! How could I do that?!

A cult classic is generally a game that develops a decently large group of devoted followers who then (unconsciously or otherwise) put it on a pedestal and wish that other games could learn from it (a strict copy may suffice if the game is old enough).

Yes, because raiding a village, slaughtering their men, and enslaving their women for bondage is FAAAAAR to stuck on "mass appeal".
As opposed to the torture, human sacrifice, brainwashing, and demon-summoning from Dungeon Keeper.
Thats all in Overlord too.

I dunno, thats quite a strange way of discribing a cult classic (And kinda makes it sound bad, but maybe its just how im reading it) If that was the case then cult classics are: Any Lucas Arts adventure game, Any Bullfrog game (Ever! All of which should be remade with no changes and just new levels and maybe new items) and All the Trokia games (Which should have gotten sequals)

Thinking about it I guess they are all cult classics, I dont even care if I sound like a fanboy
Good discription

*Edit: Serious Sam, very good and widely missed game. Well pointed out

Jet Grind Radio and Jet Set Radio Future, the second being my third-favorite game of all time.
Just found JSRF at a game store yesterday, and got it for $6. I'm amazed that it didn't sell well, considering how stylish/awesome it is.

OT: Sin & Punishment comes to mind as an unmentioned cult classic.

Mount and Blade
Fallout 1+2
Doom (sold well but STILL has a small dedicated community that builds WADs)
Baldur's Gate 1+2

As I said, Overlord is considered a "cult classic".
Having played Overlord, I don't remember much of that. The game seemed to be playing it far too safe, and not having the proper feel for a game about an evil overlord. It was rather cartoonish, and I'd even say cutesy. Sure you were evil, but it wasn't a gritty evil, it was more like being evil in fable. I also remember the gameplay feeling rather repetitive after a point.

As for cult classics, I think Mount and Blade will eventually become one, but it isn't so much a classic game as an indie game with a niche appeal. ArmA II will probably be like that too.

Those are barely in Overlord. Except for goblin-summoning (no demon-summoning in Overlord), those events happen once or twice as "decisions," whereas in Dungeon Keeper, the player performs them all of the time for practical purposes.
